necron rumour discussion thread from chicago gamesday

As you are all aware Jervis dropped a nugget or two at the Chicago Gamesday recently, discussing Necrons amongst other things. [as reported on BoLS]

    "1:00pm...Jervis spoke:
-The Studio loves the idea of Chaos Legion specific codices. It will allow GW to build Legion specific models, but is still a while off.
-Necrons are further along that that, and Mike (???, unclear) has been dropping hints of what we may see in an upcoming Necron codex in various books."

From the Gamesday thread, reposted in an attempt to kick start this discussion away from the distort of all of the other gamesday rumours and notices.

Quote Originally Posted by Arkaedin View Post

No, sorry, what it means is that one of the developers whose first name is Mike (last name I couldn't understand because of Jervis' accent) has taken a liking to the Necrons and has been toying with a lot of new ideas which he has been throwing into codices, supplements and the rulebook to gauge opinions on them and to create background information on new units (and fluff ideas) in case they make it into the future codex. Jervis told me to look closely at anything that mentions necrons and any future releases because they will most likely hint at what the new codex will be like. He implied that the tiered Necron lord rumor is true as well, but never said it outright.

@Ironmonger - 1) No information was given outright 2) No new models were shown 3) No new release dates given
    Big sadface, i know
The purpose of this thread is to try and get some idea of whoever Mike <accent distorted> may be, what hints may have been dropped to date and the like.

This goes back to what I said in my thread a while back about the abilities/stratagems that are in apocolypse reload. I am now certain the 'control enemy tank' will be in the new 'dex.

    Mike McVey?

I'm not sure I see the new unit concepts in supplements and whatnot. All we've really had so far are some variant Lords (who seem to exist outside the nodal command structure), another picture of [presumeably] an Abbattoire, and confirmation of Necron aerial units - none of which strike me as being particularly suited to normal 40K games...

I'm guessing that means any hope of us getting a super powerful and characterful army, like Eldar or Orks is out of the question since Phil Kelly isn't writing the book... damn.

Note the guy that wrote the Ig's book is a genius too, but the army still ain't Orks or Eldar.

Well the Easter Eggs I think we have:

Apocalypse: Lords of various levels (Silver, Gold, Platinium)

MRB: Lords who are bonkers and think they are C'tan. People think this means we are losing the C'tan. Which is fair enough as they really should be beyond the level of normal game play. I personally hope that the ability to purchase Lords of equivalent powers is given to us.

The MRB and Planetstrike also emphaise teleportation quite a bit. It might be that we get more VOD type abilities or DS options for squads.

Agreed on the 3 tier lord thing. Mike Mcvey doesnt work for GW anymore and hasnt done for some time, not since he went off and co-founded privateer press.. I was really hoping that they address the psychic hole in the necrons defence. Getting booed off the board by the 10 man IG psyker cheese bomb sitting in the back of a chimera is getting tiresome. Fearlessness will go a long way to addressing this but I am now stumbling well into wishlisting and not rumourmongering! - derailing my own thread! terrible!

Mike Anderson perhaps. He's a miniature designer, but maybe he's branching out a bit and writing. If it is a writer, then perhaps it is Mike Lee.

I just got a mail from someone who works at GW - not able to give out a lot of info but suggested that it may be one Mike Botterel <not sure of the spelling> who is head of the studio <not sure which one that would be either>

It sounds like the Necrons may be getting just what they need, a champion in a high place!

If Smurfs, and Emo Marines get primarchs, we should get C'tan. *Seriously... Abaddon is Horus pretty much. Marneus is The Hairbow*

Neither Marines or Chaos Marines actually get Primarchs though...

The C'tan should never have existed at 40K scale. Then agian it's not exactly difficult to get the current models to stay and make sense - Herald/ Essence of C'tan.

Since when did Necrons ever have a hard time of killing a Chimera with squishable guardsmen inside?

they dont, they do however have a hard time getting to it through the 100 odd guardsmen and tanks sitting between them and the psyker chimera

I really hope they come up with something more creative than colours for the lords.

If GW are going to be creating more large kits I guess there's a chance we might get one of those giant harvester scarabs.

ah yesss that would be this one would it?

    http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...ombStalker.jpg

mind you the thread wonders far from the topic. I have read Nightbringer and didnt see anything in there that would seem to be for a new codex and that was some time back. I also recently read mechanicum and the only thing in there that would make any sense would be a return to the old renegade medusa campaign tech priest.

Other references in newer works [like the coloured lords and the flyers have been mentioned - source would be apocalypse].

I havnt read the new IG codex was there anything in there that could potentially be an 'easter egg'?

Considering Nightbringer is about eight years old now, that's hardly surprising. Although the alabaster figures in the antechamber to the Nighbringer's tomb (which in fairness are probably Lords) might be something a little different.

    Mechanicum wasn't really about Necrons.

Only mention is Moghul Kamir's charge as far as I can remember. No new information.

However Hellforged includes a variety of new units:

    - Mothership
    - Harvester
    - Overlord
    - Sentinel planetoid thingy
    - another description of aerial units
    - two types of Dropship (yeah, I thought :WTF: too)
    - Boarding Torpedo/Asault Boat

(Sadly Counter's descriptions leave a *lot* to be desired...)

That's because Nightbringer was written around the same time as the current codex, about eight years ago.

I wouldn't recommend checking the BL novels for information as to how the Necrons are going to be, since every book describes them differently. In the ever-so-popular DoW novels, they form out of liquid metal, I think in Dark Apostle they were made up of tiny metal beetles, and in Hellforged... I'm not sure what happened, there.

If BL's consistency in describing Space Marines was anything like their consistency describing Necrons, in some of the novels Space Marines would be just regular people in power armor, some of them would depict them as they are in the codex, and CS Goto would say they were actually three squats standing on top of each other in power armor. I don't think you can count on the BL novels to reveal anything new about the next codex.

The cental spire flared wide towards the stern and barely contained a raging furnace of emerald and crimson fire, an open reactor that bled power into space. Streams of that power whipped out of the reactor into long trails looping around the immense craft, and where they touched the ship's weapons they filled with fire and glowed painfully bright against the void.

Scarabs crawled all over its surface, and behind its long segmented tail left a deep furrow in the ground as it drove forwards, flanked by the march of the Undying.
The machine's enormous bulk pushed down one of the gatehouses, and tonnes of rubble were sucked into its maw. The useless matter was siphoned off and spewed from vents along its sides as clouds of choking dust.

Its torso was a sarcophagus, an ornate casket shaped like a scarab, inset with a flat black gem of datacrystal. Its arms were long enough to touch the ground, but its hands were, in spite of their great size, somehow elegant, the fingers like articulated knives.
Instead of legs, it had a hovering motivator unit like one of the floating Necrons. Unlikt them, its abdomen was equiped with dozens of limbs, like the legs of a centipede, wriggling underneath it as if searching for something to grab.
It held a scythe, wrought in twisted gold, as ornate as the average Necron warrior was plain. Green flame rippled up the blade, matching the flame in the overlord's eye sockets.
Its skull was so long and gaunt that it lost any similarity to a human form. It had no mouth, as if the horizontal slit in a necron skull had been judged surplus to requirements. It was just a long teardrop-shaped mask of metal, its eyes the only hint of human form about it.
Its metal was dull red, flecked with gold, and it was gleaming.

EDIT: God, copying that just reinforces my hate for that aweful book.
