Scions of Kharnath - Khornate Chaos Marines

Hey guys! I've actually been working on this army for the past two years, but just now thought about taking pics and making a plog. It's taking a bit of a back seat to my Fantasy Army at the moment, but I'd like to share it with you all. I'll be taking pics and posting periodically.

They're bright red, and, unfortunately, I've never had any luck with taking pictures of red models... they always end up looking flat. Anyone have any tips? I am using the "portrait" setting on my camera, macro enabled, no flash.

Anyway, starting with my demon prince. One of my favorite models that GW has produced.

Looking good, I agree its a great model. The red has a nice even colour too which is good, but it seems a little flat to me, maybe a wash would give it some depth?

EDIT just read you're post properly, sorry for stating the obviouse lol

I really like the base of the DP. The model looks very good as well. Looking forward to seeing more.

No, no problem. I've always had trouble with taking pics of red models. The army is a bit "bright", and, inherently I think bright red is difficult to paint depth with, but, the model really isn't as flat as it looks in the pic.

I think my living room could be too bright, and the light is washing away some of the depth... I'll try taking pics in a slightly darker setting.

    I'll post some more today.

    Thanks for the comments!

I tend to like a darker red better, but your painting is very clean. The dread looks good. I like his base.

Your style is very clean; did you use Mechrite red as a base coat?

Nice clean painting style, I like them. The only thing I think that needs work is the skin on your Daemon Prince, it being pink with red armour does quite work for me.

I really like the red you've used for these models, it's clear and clean. My only complaints are the poses most of the Bezerkers are in, but that's just something I've never liked about the standard GW KB kit. I also think these models are under-highlighted.

Looks good, maybe more blood splaters on the weapons?

And now for my counts-as plague marines - "The Blessed". The Blessed are those who have offered themselves up in ritual sacrifice to Khorne, and, in return, they are filled with the essence of his rage to continue slaughter and bloodletting even in death.

I've heard this a lot, but then no one recommends how that should be done... the red is so bright that highlighting it with anything at this point is going to change the feel of the model... either towards pink or orange.

Anyone have any tips on highlighting a very bright red like this? Better yet, can anyone share examples?

    Thanks for the comments.

Instead of highlighting, go for shades. Shade with brwons. I personally use dark flesh and scorched brown. Almost black in the recesses. Only very extreme highlights with orange then, on very sharp edges for example.
Take a look in my log (good vs. evil, in my sig) on the last page. There are examples of this.
Mind you, this is only one way to work with red.

    Cheers, and hope it helps

Mmmm... well, while you are a very good painter, and I appreciate the thought, your advice does not help much. Your red is quite dark. It's almost a burgundy or even a violet color... if I were to wash my models with brown, it would really ruin them, I think.

I am going for a bright, angry red. I wanted them to look like rage.

So, does anyone have any advice for giving depth to bright red? While I am no GD winner, I am a fairly experienced painter, and I have not figured it out.

I should add that they are highlighted. It's subtle, but it's there. The process to get this red is actually extremely complex and time consuming.

Re: Scions of Kharnath - Khornate Chaos Marines

not sure if this will help but this is how i do my red and i think it comes out pretty bright or "angry". Mechrite red base over chaos black -> drybrush blood red -> then a lighter drybrush of 50/50 blood red/blazing orange or just strait Blazing orange -> then wash w/baal red then devlin mud in the most recessed areas this makes the brights look brighter. Its not the brightest red but it still has depth witch IMO makes it stand out more. Hope this helps.

Edit: ohh by the way i think your marines look very nice, love the dead guard on the base of the prince and the dread.

I really like your conversion from this newest squad, especially the Champion.

No tips for painting red, sorry, hope someone else has some good tips.

Washing the whole area with a darker color is not the only way to shade. Use dark browns, mixed with your base red color and just apply them close to the recesses. You can still have the color thin like a wash, for smoothness, but don't cover the main part of the red areas with it. Then make the mix even darker, almost black even, and just line right in the recesses. If you do this well I can guarantee your red will keep it's brightness but gain depth. Either way, you have to try it before you decide it doesn't work.

I don't know if you'll like my red (seen here on Terminators and here on a Defiler) but for that kind of red I wouldn't shade more, but do highlights with orange and then I actually did careful edge highlights with straight yellow!

Do both shades and the highlights and you'll have insane contrasty depth and a wildly shiny bright red and because of the shades it'll probably look less orange than mine.

You should try out different things, even if it takes long to do all of them. Then you can pick which ones you think worked and make a scheme with fewer steps for the rest of your minis.
