    Diary of a reluctant painter

    Evening guys,

I have been a long time hobbyist and have never been bothered with painting. For years it has been the bane of my life (well at least my war gaming life). In an attempt to get some semblance of motivation, I have decided to start a painting log. So here we go…

I really fancied doing something a bit challenging and have reasoned that an eldar army would be a good shout. I’m also going to be trying out some simple (but hopefully cool lookin’) conversions.

Here’s a picture of my first unit, Eldar Guardian Defenders squad with weapon platform. Warlock will follow soon.

    C&C appreciated.

Id recomend another layer or two of the red basecoat before highlighting because the black undercoat is showing through, the bone on the weapons platform is nicely highlighted.
hope that helps and keep it up mate

    Hi again,

Progress is slow but here's my warlock to lead my guardians.

My Wraithguard Unit will follow shortly (well relatively anyway)

I'm really new to this painting lark so any comments would be appreciated.

are you planning you painting there bases? Seems like you are off to a good start on you models, just think they would benefit from some painted bases. Just get some sand paint it black then dry brush codex grey then some fortress grey then a little skull white.

Your paints are going on smoothly. Which I believe is important when painting eldar. Looking good. Keep it up!

Oh and the bases need to be painted as well for it to look complete.

    Cheers

Funniest/coolest line I've read on Warseer! And a pretty good description of the plogs above.

I can sense your frustration you have for painting. I had the same thing for some years, but then, just recently, I started a log here. Painting time has rocketed up and I am tedious to get working on the figs (although it's been slow for a week because other projects made me succumb)
If you liked my comment, please return the favor and comment on something I've made!
How about checking out this random cavalcade?

I'm crazy and I'm Finnish. Don't blame me, it's the polar bears!

Very nice for first attempts! I would suggest that you may want to add a few thinner layers of white over your shurikens to make the colour more consistent. You can ask me if you need any help with painting your Eldar.
Is the word of "some guy" with a fancy hair do and a big hat enough to make you go kill somebody?

Overally, you technique and contol look very good and I think you will be able to produce an army to be proud of!

Looking at your Guardians, it seem you need a few more layers of paint to cover your primer. This is the problem with painting colors over black primer, it often takes multiple coats to achieve complete coverage. This is especially true with reds and yellows which are offer notoriously poor coverage. Some people have luck undercoating their reds with brown, or with GW's new Foundation paints (in this case, Mechlite Red) before appying the final shade of red. Personally, I just use white primer when I am planning a paint job that will be predominantly white or bright colors.

The Warlock figure is really nice and certainly usable just as is. I might add a bit more highlighting to his robe and helment, but I try to paint my figures so they look good at "tabletop" distance (2-3 feet) which generally requires higher contrast. In the same vein, some additional highlighting to the bone areas of the Guardians and the Support Weapon might be good, too.

Again, your doing a great job so far. These are just some (hopefully) friendly comments to help you do even better. Good luck!
