    StraightSilver's Macragge PDF (pics soon)

    Hi everybody.

Well after a loooong time away from my paint brushes I have once again decided not to finish what I was doing previously but start something new instead!

The funny thing is rather than start something completely different I have at least decided to start an army that can be incorporated into 2 of my existing armies!

So I have an almost finished 2000 point Cadian Army, and a half finished 1500 point Ultramarines army.

I actually surprised myself by really enjoying painting the Ultramarines, in particular the Scouts, and I learned a lot painting my Cadians, in particular how I could have finished them much sooner (they took 4 years on and off!!).

So I decided with the arrival of the new IG Codex to start a new Imperial Guard army, but the idea was that I could paint it up slowly and incorporate it into my existing Guard army, as I will be painting up new units that are lacking in my Cadians.

I will be constructing a 1500 point army which will be based around my interpretation of the Macragge PDF.

This therefore means bleached bone fatigues and Ultramarines Blue armour. The figures will pretty much match the colour scheme of Ultramarines Scouts.

For cool factor and also to speed things up all the models will be getting Forge World Respirator Heads, which means no faces to paint except on sergeants which will make painting easier.

I can paint tanks pretty fast too, and as I already have a fairly infantry heavy Cadian army this army will be fully mechanised with quite a few tanks.

Because Macragge PDF units are apparently better equipped and more disciplined than most Guard Regiments my troops choices will be veterans and there will be a high prevalence of plasma weaponry.

I will also be heavily converting my vehicles, using a combination of Guard and Marine parts to give the impression of better equipment and a link to the Ultramarines themselves.

I have only just started assembling the first squad: A 10 man Veteran Squad with Autocannon and 2 plasma guns in a Chimera, but I hope to have something to show very soon.

I am mainly running this PLOG to motivate me to get something done as I am notorious for slacking and haven't painted for several months!

My army will also follow the Codex Astartes, so will feature Marine markings (Tactical Squad arrows), helmet colours (red for sergeants, white for Veterans etc) and will have Ultramarines logos to represent Ultamar.

They will also be split up into 10 companies, but still follow a Guard Platoon Structure.

I plan to have no Penal Troops, Ogryns or Ratlings in this army as they don't fit into the epitome of Imperial Society that Utramar represents, but there will be lots of Vets, Stormtroopers, Sentinels etc.

Anyway, that's about it, hopefully have WIP piccies in next couple of days!

it could work, but i don't like the fact they will have the Ultrasmurfs markings. you could do a slight variation of the ultras markings maybe. its just that would the marines like the guard licking there ass, even if they do come from the same system

    Hi God LFC,

Yes I must admit a fair few people have also mentioned the same thing.

However having read through the (minimal) amount of background regarding Macragge and Ultramar I am pretty confident that my interpretation fits the fluff.

The symbol for Utramar (the planetary system) is the both the Utramarines "U" sybol and ironically an eight pointed star which represents the 8 planets in the system.

Children from Ultramar, and in particular Macragge are inducted into military academies such as Agiselus from the age of four and all receive the same amount of vigorous training.

It is from these academies that the Ultramarines recruit their aspirants, and my take on Ultramar as a whole is that it would also follow the teachings of Roboute Guilliman very closely, including the Codex Astartes.

Space marine Captains are also the planetary rulers of the Ultramar system, unlike other Imperial systems who have Planetary Governors appointed by the Administratm and so I believe they would also heavily influence the iconography of their own Planetary Defence Forces.

Therefore I felt a Guard/PDF Army that followed the Codex Astartes wouldn't be such a stretch, and since the Ultramar "U" also represented the system that this wouldn't be a problem.

However lots of people have voiced opinions on Guardsmen sporting marine iconography, so much so that I am considering changing it slightly.

I do though want to incoroporate this army into my Ultramarines army and want to keep a unified theme, hence the same colour scheme and iconography, but I am considering one of two things.

Either the Ulramarines "U" with an M in the centre to represent Macragge, or the Ultramarines "U" with an 8 pointed starburst behind it to represent Ultramar. What do you think?

The 8 pointed starburst is handy though as the new Imperial Guard Command squad set has this on one of the plastic standards.

The eight pointed star. But **** me that will be hard to paint on their little shoulder pads.

Hi everybody, well I finally managed to get hold of a camera, only to discover that I then took some really rubbish pics!!

Still at least we have signs of progress, albeit slow. Didn't get as much done as I should have done over the weekend, but that's mainly because the conversions I had in my head didn't quite turn out to be so easy in reality!

First up is the almost complete Bungaroo Pattern Chimera.

However for fluff sake I present:

Re: StraightSilver's Macragge PDF (pics soon)

Then just because I get distracted so easily instead of assembling the Hardened Vets to go with this I started making the mock up Turret for my Guilliman Pattern Hellhound.

In the theme of the army this uses Marine Razorback Parts mounted on a Chimera chassis, in this case a modified Razorback turret with converted Land Raider Redeemer flamers.

This is one of those ideas that worked really well in my head, but now in practice I'm not so sure (although it's hard to tell with the quality of the photos).

It does look like a Guard Razorback which is sort of the point, but I think the combination of the Razorback Turret and the Bungaroo pattern Chimera make the profile a bit too high.

I am considering mounting the Inferno Cannon further forward above the driver section (it is a remote turret similar to the Graia pattern Hellhound), but I will wait and see.

This is still very, very WIP. I plan to make some modifications to the Chimera chassis too to include the fule bowser etc, but this was just to get a feel for the turret.

And then I also started some of my Vets, but obviously haven't got far.

Apart from the FW heads these are pretty much straight Cadians apart from the sergeant. I have shaved off some of his chest armour and added a Brass Etched FW Aquilla. This is to make him look more Ultramarine like, without going too far.

I have also shaved off the little lug things on the back of their armour to give a smoother more streamlined appearance.

Cheers for looking, I promise to take better photos next time! ;D

    Hi Guys,

Well first of all apologies for the delay in posting updates. This is mainly because I haven't really got a huge amount done to be honest!

I made a start painting up my first squad, didn't like them and so repainted them!

These are still very much work in progress but I am happy with the final paint recipe so thought I would let you guys have a look.

So far only the fatigues and Armour have been finished, so things like bases, grenades, lasguns, webbing etc still have yet to be done.

The Ultramar iconography also needs adding, as well as Squad/Platoon numbers which will go on their backs. I have painted on the tactical Squad Arrow to conform to the Codex Astartes, but I cannot seem to get the white to sit properly so may have to redo these.

The only major issue I had with these was the fatigues. I had worked out in my head a very quick way to paint them as I have already painted lots of scouts for my Ultras and thought I could use the same recipe, but in reality it didn't work.

I had used Gryphonne Sepia wash over Dheneb Stone, but this gave too warm a colour which didn't suit the coldness of the blue, so I went back and toned them down with them some more subtle washes and glazes and repainted all 10 of them!

The final recipe is Dheneb Stone with a Gryphonne Sepia wash as the base colour. This is then highlighted using Kommando Khaki and Bleached Bone, with a couple of glazes made mixing Kommando Khakli and Gryphonne Sepia.

Obviously these 3 are by no means finished but they give a good impression of how the army will look and I am pleased so far.

And then a pic with a couple of my Ultras just to get a feel of how they match up

    Cheers for looking.

Cheers Nals, and I know what you mean, starting this army has already given me some new ideas.

I am now considering another Guard army, this time an Artillery Company painted up in Imperial Fists colours! :0

To be honest, they're wonderful. I'll certainly do some myself - you've struck a silver, or a gold lode, here. Good vehicle kit bashes, by the way.

A lot of people sneezes at Ultramarines, and I understand why (poster boys!), but if one look behind that, at their background, their colour (blue's my favourite one) and possibilities to incorporate more Roman elements - they're very cool. Macragge PD Forces often follow suit, and yours will go a long way reinforce your Marines.

    Some suggestions:

-Good to see you're doing the Sergeants' helmets red. For some of them, or at least for your Junior Officers, you could add a Roman/Greek crest to their helmets, with the straws probably painted white. I firmly believe that it'd go a good way to improve the whole force's impression (which mean I'll do itmyself anyway, in the future ).

-Stick to normal humans with this force - abhumans will likely disturb the disciplined, militaristic look.

-Do the "M" inside the "U" - it'll be easier, and guaranteed to work good.

-Whilst you're building up your force, don't hesitate to throw in a Marine squad as Stormtroopers for your games.

-Don't miss the chane to do a counsellor/Astropath/other in a toga.

    Best of luck!

Re: StraightSilver's Macragge PDF (pics soon)

    Cheers N0th1ng c4n b34t 3lv3s,

I agree that a lot of people do indeed turn their noses up at Ultramarines, but admittedly I have to admit that I was one of those people too for ages.

I only built an Ultramarines army because I wanted to push myself to paint something I wasn't keen on, in order to discipline myself a bit (I tend to go ooh shiny too much and get distracted).

However once I started painting them I have to admit to falling in love with them, and blue is such a lovely colour to paint.

That's pretty much why I chose to paint up some Macragge PDF, but also because the new IG Codex throwa up some great new themed lists, and I couldn't resist a mechanised Guard army (although I am enjoying painting it so much it may expand...)

As for the suggestions, you have pretty much read my mind to be honest!

There will be no abhumans as I feel they wouldn't be appropriate, so no ratlings or Ogryns.

I had also ruled out Penal Troops as again I would imagine that such a strict and ordered society would probably have a death penalty, or have very low crime rates (Ultramar is meant to be the ultimate epitomy of Imperial society, similar to the Imperium prior to the Heresy).

However looking at the stats and tactical possibilities of Penal Troops I can't leave them out, so have decided to create some Hoplites. These will be lightly armoured scout troops which fit the bill nicely, and should have some of these to show soon.

I wanted to leave marines out of this army, but I do intend to have some Stormtroopers, although these will be renamed Spartans as they are not associated with the Schola Progenium.

And I intend to have a Psyker Battle squad painted up in Librarian colours, so blue robes, yellow sashes etc.

And I am currently working on the Lt. Varras model from Battle ro Macragge, who I will be using as my Officer of the Fleet.

But I do very much like the ide of adding crests to some of the helmets, so I may give that try this weekend.

And I love the idea of an advisor in a toga, so that's going in too!

    Cheers.

Nice looking force, this will be a pdf to be proud of when it's finished. I realy like the brass eagle on the sarge, seamless conversion work there, subtle but still reenforces him as the boss.

    Keep up the good work.

Yes, that's the appeal with Ultramar, even if people complain that it's the Ultramarines that owns it - it's such a stark contrast from the grim societies of the modern Imperium, a conservated capsule from a brief, golden time that turned out to be nothing more than a parantese between two aeons of dark struggle.

A very good idea for the counts-as Penal Legion; it fit the image of ol' Guilliman's campaigns with disciplined, specialised troops. Will they be Cadians with trimmed-off shoulder pads and different, lighter helmets? Or perhaps something else entirely?

Except for the choice of name, I'll cheer you upon this. Any particular models in mind? SM Scouts, with Elysian heads, other backpacks and different weapons could work.

Another great choice - he doesn't happen to have Ultramarines iconography moulded on him?

This is a very cool idea and being done really well. If you don't mind I may do something similar to tie my Sisters of Battle and IG together.
