Thread: StraightSilver's Macragge PDF (pics soon)

Re: StraightSilver's Macragge PDF (pics soon)

Cheers everybody, and Tzen Squirrel by all means steal away, I would be very interested to see somthing similar done for SOB / Witch Hunters.

And N0th1ng c4n b34t 3lv3s yes now you come to mention it "Spartans" is a bit naff! I wanted to keep a Greco / Roman theme, and liked "Hoplites" for my Scout / Penal troopers but don't think "Spartans" will work, for a start it's been used to death.

Any suggestions for Greek / Roman names for specialist troops? I imagine Agisellus barracks to be similar to a Gladiatorial School so maybe I could pilfer something from that?

As for the Hoplites they will be:

    Marine Scout Legs
    Cadian Torsos
Cadian arms without shoulder pads or Catachan arms with sleeves sculpted on (rolled up to elbows)
Marine Sniper Scout Heads (the ones with Night Vision goggles)
    Forge World cadian backpacks.

And the Stormtroopers I haven't decided yet. They will be riding valkyries so I may expand upon my Drop Troop Vets I did for my Cadians a while back.

    Cheers.

Sounds like a good plan for the Hoplites! However, why not name them Peltasts? Being light troopers, that'd be approriate, and then you could call the Stormtroopers "Hoplites", right? (Peltasts were skirmishers, often slaves, arranged in front of Hoplite formations, and were used to pepper the enemy with javelins before running off)

On the Roman / Greek names magazining:

    - Hastati (the core of the Roman Republican army before Mariu's reforms), which where quite lightly armoured infantry, quite much like the later Legionnaries.

    - Velites, skirmishers with small round shields and javelins, like the peltasts.

    - Triarii (the hard knot in the army which could always be depended upon), old Republican unit, veterans in heavy armour with spears.

    - Equites, light cavalry unit.

@PariahZero: Yep, it's things like this that have to be 'napped. Besides, you can Edit your message if you misspelt something.

This is seriously awesome work. What sort of units are you planning to add to the force, apart from Veterans and hellhounds? Would love to see what you come out with.

Best of luck with the rest of the project.

Re: StraightSilver's Macragge PDF (pics soon)

By all means do please loot away, although I can't take credit for the Chimera as I stole the idea from Bungaroo, although I intend to expand on it with other variants such as my Hellhound.

As far as the fatigues are concerned I have to admit I have had a lot of practice as I have painted 2000pts of cadians in the past, but these were done using a slightly faster method.

Over a black undercoat I painted the fatigues in Dheneb Stone (Foundation Paint). Even though Foundation paints have excellent coverage I still used 2 thin coats rather than a single one as I didn't want to obscure any details.

This looks almost white at this stage but don't panic, it will change.

Then apply a wash of Gryphonne Sepia over all the Dheneb Stone.

Then apply Komando Khaki as a basecoat leaving some of the Dheneb Stone/Gryphonne Sepai mix showing in the recesses.

Then do the same with Bleached bone, again leaving some of the previous mix in the recesses.

To tidy up then mix a glaze of Kommando Khaki and Gryphonne Sepia (about 50:50) and apply that all over to tone down the previous wash and to tie in the earlier layering.

Highlight with Bleached Bone, and then Bleached Bone and Skull White.

I know this sounds very longwinded, and to be honest the Gryphonne Sepia wash over Dheneb Stone is more than passable, but I am more of a painter than a gamer (although I do game a lot too) and so do spend silly amounts of time on my squads.

However this is probably why I never get anything finished.....

@ KobraKai: This was originally going to be a fully mechanised army, so just a couple of squads of Vets in Chimeras and then lots of tanks, mainly because my other IG army is more infantry based.

However as with all things once I started this project I suddenly thought of lots of new things, and intend to expand a bit.

After playtesting the list I decided I needed more troops. Probably the best choice in the new Dex for objective taking Troops is the Penal Squad, but I wanted to avoid Penal Troops in my army as it doesn't fit my fluff, but I will be making my own "counts as" unit of lightly armoured Scouts.

Hopefully I will include a Psyker Battle Squad too, but I want to use the current IG Psykers, but as there are only 3 or so models I may wait to see if any new ones come out. I do however have a nice idea for the Enforcer for this squad.

I also have an idea for another Hellhound variant - The Devil Dog, and my Leman Russes will be quite different too.

I plan to use a fair bit of marine Scout Parts on my other squads to tie them in with the vehicles, and the theme, and have some nice ideas for my HQ squad, so watch this space.

Edit: Also managed to get a bit of work done on the Hellhound. This is still very rough but its getting there. Added Fuel Cannisters and new side panels, changed the back hatch into a fuel bowser and added some brass etch work too.

This is my very first time with plasticard though and it shows. The stuff I had was far too thick, which is why my cutting is poor, and I should really have waited to get some more, but the nearest model shop is an hour away and am too impatient....

That is some damn sexy tank right there. The turret alone is enough to make the opposition flee!

I really like the colour scheme but the best bit for me are the Chimera conversions. Just what I'd expect from the Macragge PDF. Kudos to you sir

Speaking as someone who has nightmares in Ultramarine Blue, I have to say your PDF soldiers are amazing - the color scheme works incredibly well and I like the extra "techiness" of them. Very cool Chimera conversions as well...

Your work is just proof positive that blue does work as a color for soldiers... Just not my soldiers

I love your Ultramar PDF. I've wanted to do the same thing a while ago, but it's one of many ideas that will never happen.

I could imagine using the penal legion rules for scout-candidates.

I'm looking forward seeing this army grow.

Re: StraightSilver's Macragge PDF (pics soon)

Hi Guys, cheers for all the great comments, I am really enjoying painting this army so hopefully won't get too tempted to start something else in the mean time!

And on that note I have to confess that progress has been slooooow....

The sad thing is for once I have the urge to paint and get frustrated when I can't (normally I have no urge so capitalise on it when I can!), but recently I have been very busy with "real life" which has meant I haven't made a huge amount of progress.

But just to show that I have done something here are some shots of my Guilliman Pattern Hellhound.

Obviously still nowhere near finished, but it is looking promising.

The decals do look awful but they are only temporary and are there to give me an idea of how much white there will be on the model. This is because my Ultramarines Rhinos all have large white Tactical/Assault etc symbols on them which breaks up the blue and I want something similar (but more subtle) on my PDF vehicles.

I should also really be painting up my Infantry Platoon as they are my first troops choice but for some reason I keep getting drawn back to this model....

I may change a couple of things. Some of the highlighting on the side panels is incorrectly placed and a bit messy, but I will wait and see what it looks like with all the edge highlighting in place first (this takes me ages and is quite boring which is why I haven't finished it yet!).

    Cheers for looking.

these are truely fantastic, i think that Mcragge PDF forces are easily an army that people spoil, these however are great!
You are a very gifted painter and your army has a nice aesthetic! I particularly like the introduction of codex insignia on the PDF forces and the converted tanks are a nice twist!

keep up the good work fella
