I see what you mean by good prices US Plastic linky, although not as good as foamboard down under, did you have a look for the largest sheet sizes? they usually work out good value.

Re: Tommygun does what with paper?

That's the acrylic stuff you linked to.
    The polystyrene (Plasticard) is here:

    http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/ite...ickid=redirect

Here are the prices. Notice the large price jump for over 0.060 (1.5mm)
That because it is too thick to roll up into a box and the shipping is much higher.
They put "some" of the shipping cost into the purchase price, but also charge more for shipping.
I don't know why, but this is a common practice in the commercial industry.
To California, three sheets of .060 thick will ship for about $27, while .080 will ship for $46.
If you live in the US it's a great deal on the thinner sizes.
The stuff that comes rolled up will flatten out nicely once unrolled.
If you buy the foam core in 25 sheet bulk sizes you can get the square footage for less than half the price I think, but the polystyrene is a superior material.

    .020" 0.5mm Thick High Impact Styrene Sheet 40" X 72" $6.10

    .030" 0.75mm Thick High Impact Styrene Sheet 40" X 72" $8.97

    .040" 1mm Thick High Impact Styrene Sheet 40" X 72" $12.99

    .060" 1.5mm Thick High Impact Styrene Sheet 40" X 72" $19.16

    .080" 2.0mm Thick High Impact Styrene Sheet 40" X 72" $36.34

TommyGun supplied the geometry on this. I hope he will also do some textures for a Sci Fi or Modern version ...

    It's getting closer.
You can almost smell the coal burning.

It will probably hold 6 to 10 adventurers/Dwarfs.
There will also be a removable flight stand.

Very cool! I assume you're designing this as you go? If I may be so bold, I'd like to offer some suggestions... 1) given the size of the thing, I'd consider using a pop can or Pringles tube for the body. 2) Any plans for weapons mounts on the gunwales? A generic yoke that would accept a steam cannon, swivel gun, or sci-fi weapon system would be ideal. 3) Wouldn't an ordinary cone (as opposed to the faceted one you're using) be better for the tail section? Looking at the first picture in post #264, it seems as though the thickness of the paper interferes with getting a good sharp point... all of the tabs get in each other's way and make the construction difficult. A single sheet rolled into a cone with just a single seam would give you a sharper point, but I'd think you could still get it to match up nicely to the existing body geometry. I apologize if that isn't clear... Geometry class was a long time ago.

At any rate, I'm anxious to see the rest of it.

Re: Tommygun does what with paper?

A cone would be easier, but it wouldn't match the rest of the vehicle's ridged frame look.
If I knew how to use 3D software I could design a one piece cone and fold it to have 12 sides.
It needs to be done by the 1st of July.
I would like to do a brass Gatling gun if I have the time. Will see?

Edit: Steam Engine and gearbox now done:

    All Done!
Steam Powered Zeppelin with two different flight stands.
I only need one flight stand, so I wont build the cloud version.
Note: The flight stand is full of gravel from the pet store.

Edit: I was able to fit them into 3 pdf files of 14.1 Megs total.
    1) Zeppelin pdf File
    2) Flight Stand pdf File
    3) Zeppelin Instructions pdf File
    png files also available.

Some folks give an estimate on build time and a difficulty scale on their models. Would you estimate this to be a weekend project? Or would it be a bit longer?

Having not built it yet, but looking at the shapes involved, I think the cutting of parts is going to be the most tedious part of this. Is that about right?

This is definitely going in my permanent collection.

Quite impressive! And you made your deadline, which is a nice bonus!

For your demo model, did you print the file on cardstock, or glue it to cardboard (something like a cereal box)?

Re: Tommygun does what with paper?

Thanks, it was a fun model to do.
As far as difficulty is concerned, it is easy to cut out, but the nose and tail area ,some people may find challenging to glue up.
I made the whole thing with my usual 110 Lb paper /200 gsm.
It wouldn't hurt to add reinforcement to the mid section.
    Have fun with it.

Re: Tommygun does what with paper?

    Thank you Sir.

    Next project:
Things to hide behind while you shoot at people.

Here is a test for a new container design.
It's based on the ones used in aircraft.
They are shaped this way because they have to fit inside an aircraft's round body.
There will be two sizes; medium and small ( half as wide, but the same profile).
There will also be two variations of each: an upper and a lower version.
This is the medium upper version.
The last picture in the attachments is what a medium lower container will be configured as.
It's basically just a flipped over version of the upper container with the letter and graphics flip over.
When done, they will be available for down load at my site.

I like the container. Being way more into scifi, I'd love to see it with Blue Sun logo or something, but I'd readily use it as you have pictured here. Especially since Qantas isn't real common around my parts.

Re: Tommygun does what with paper?

Here is the start of the small containers.
I also made a large one, but I screwed up.
I just wasn't thinking as I drew it up.
It should be half an octagon in profile, but instead, I just stretched a medium one out longer.
Oh well, it doesn't look bad, so I'll include a few of them too.
I will also go back and make a proper large one.

    Edit: here it is.
