Precinct Omega - Red Scorpions commission

For anyone wondering, the titans are still making good progress, but my photograph booth is utterly buried with enormous lumps of resin.

In the mean time, in the interests of keeping my income going, I have accepted another commission to paint a Red Scorpions army. I'll post the army list shortly, but here's a good photo to start it off:

I've got a bit of a painting challenge: virtual cookies on offer to those who might be able to help.

My client wants a weathered finish. But, of course, the Red Scorpions have a charcoal grey colour scheme, so conventional weathering techniques just won't show up all that well. I've got a few ideas on how to address it, but I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts.

Well Charcoal Grey makes it hard, as it is already quite dark, but for one here's nice link from a model train guy weathering black engines:
    http://ttamt.blogspot.com/2007/09/we...eathering.html

And on the other hand, you can always simulate the paint chiping with a lighter grey undercoat, and chaos black for the shading...similar to the chips here on the light grey

I hope this helps a bit...

Frustratingly, I can't remember the issue number, but if you can dig up the recent-ish White Dwarf in which Darren Latham paints the Assault on Black Reach warboss there's a decent guide to chips/weathering on lighter colours...although it focusses on yellow, it'd probably adjust easily to a light grey...

    Marco

    EDIT:

Actually, the article in question is in the March 2009 UK WD, also available from the White dwarf archive on the gw website...it comes as a downloadable PDF file. PM me if you want to access a copy, or simply sign up to the gw website and select, 'White Dwarf', 'Archive', 'Painting and Modelling', 'Masterclasses' and finally 'Warhammer 40,000 Ork Warboss Masterclass'....
The part of the article that's most relevant is on the 6th page of the article (pg 93 of the original magazine article) under 'painting the paint chips'.

    Hope this helps!

take a look at how my good buddy paints his weathering.

Re: Precinct Omega - Red Scorpions commission

All good links, and I have that White Dwarf. I've done a fair amount of weathering before, but haven't done black before. Anyway, here's my test model:

Now, in retrospect, I overdid the weathering. But there is, after all, a reason for doing a test model (this is an AoBR terminator, so not one of my client's). I basically painted the whole mini with a 4:1 mix of Chaos Black:Codex Grey then did edge highlights with Adeptus Battlegrey for a nice Charcoal finish. I then added the yellow stripes before sponging the miniature with ABG and then Codex Grey.

I painted the base in Tallarn Flesh and then drybrushed with Bleached Bone, with the BB rising up the mini's legs to give him a "walked through the desert" finish.

Other than the fact that the weathering was overdone, I'm pretty happy. But I'm going to add some metallic exposed areas to those parts where the weathering is densest and at corners and ridges to finish off.

    Nothing too fancy.

I've left off a lot of detail on this mini, but it took about 10mins. The actual minis themselves will take a lot more time.

I think the test figure looks great... and as a footnote wish I'd done it with my BL. Oh well live and learn!!
