    Krieg 60th Assault Korps

I've been steadily building up a Kreig army for a couple of years now, but recently I've picked up pace a bit and the army is taking shape as a rapid reaction assault korps.

The detachment contains elements from the 4th Tank Army, 143rd Infantry, 61st Motorised Infantry & 9th Panzer Division.

The different elements have a mix of dark green (61st) and blue-grey uniforms (143rd, 9th). The mobile artillery attached to the 143rd is also blue-grey, while the tanks and transports of the other units is light green.

I will post a full breakdown of units and vehicles in a later post.

I've been inspired by other logs, particularly Bungaroo's, and my force contains some "Bungaroo pattern chimeras". I am trying to do all my vehicles up to the FW masterclass standard.

I'll get around to posting up pictures of some of my progress so far over the next few weeks, but in the meantime here is my current WIP of a grenadier cenataur from the 9th Panzer Division. I have taken it up to a matt varnish layer over the oil washes and paint chips and now need to add mud/dust weathering.

Looks good. Any pics of other units to go with it yet? or is this the first of many?

I've got around 2000pts worth of various stuff in various stages of being painted, I'm intending on posting up pictures of the finished stuff over the next few days/weeks and then pictures of everything else as and when I make some progress.

    Re: Krieg 60th Assault Korps

Haven't had a chance to take any pictures so far, but I've found some on my hard-drive. This is the colour scheme for the 143rd Infantry. Since taking this picture they are now based up properly.

The greatcoats are painted with a basecoat of about 4:1 shadow grey: chaos black (which I have a pre-mixed pot of). Then shaded with a 1:1:1 mix of brown ink/black ink/blue ink. The basecoat is reapplied and then blended up with increasing amounts of codex grey into the mix.

The trousers/bindings are painted khemri brown, then washed with a thinned coat of brown ink.

Metallic areas are painted tin bitz, then boltgun metal, finall chainmail highlights, before multiple glazes with unthinned black ink. (I guess strictly speaking it is not a glaze, but I am uses the ink to alter the underlying colour and knock it back to a near black metallic look, rather than to shade).

The webbing is painted with a base coat of scorched brown and then blended up with codex grey. Using the same highlighting colour on the greatcoats and the webbing really helps to pull the look together.

The eye lenses are painted dark angle green and then highlighted with very thin (bilious?) green (very light lime green from the old skool round-pot citadel paints range)

Ahh. Another Kreig force. I love the aesthetic that FW put into these guys. Also, good job, I would recommend getting at least one Titan, as you probably have an apocalypse force right there.

    Re: Krieg 60th Assault Korps

Thanks for looking everyone. I'll keep trying to post up pictures, they will be a mix of finished stuff and stuff as I do it for the next few weeks.

@ Brother Alexos: The Krieg models are things of beauty! I'm not sure I could stretch to a titan though!! The way I am intended on building the fluff is to keep it growing as my army grows. So initially they are going to be a scratch assault force, put together in the field. Then maybe as their deeds and legend grows they might be attached to a titan hunting force (i.e. I'll add some super heavies), then who knows? Eventually they may find themselves fighting alongside titans!

For now he is my take on the modified Chimera, which I believe was "invented" by Bungaroo on his excellent Krieg log. I certainly took his tips and advice in putting them together. As you can see, if you are not familiar with his log, the turret is set back towards the rear of the hull. The turret is a forgeworld autocannon one, just because it looks cooler. Apart from a small bit of plasticard work at the front and rear it is all made with components out of the box.

The expanded hull heavy bolter bit is just made from 0.5mm plasticard, with the heavy bolter cut just in front of the tarpaulin mount.

The hull top-plate from the kit is cut with a saw just at the angle of the turret plate and the first lasgun hole, and then again just behind the second lasgun hole. Then a bit of fine tuning of the bits to get them to fit together

The back is where I have made some alterations to the original bungaroo pattern, I have put spare wheels from the track assembly into the lasgun ports, to make it look like hard-points, that something could be fitted to, e.g. hunter killer, or improved coms. The gap where the top-hatch is just had one of the original half-doors inserted into it. I needed to score and snap the door just outside the line of the hinges to get it the right width.

In these pictures they are painted with a basecoat of vallejo russian WW2 uniform green, I'm going to do them with a white vertical strip down the sides with the Vraks numbers on from the FW transfer sheet and then masterclass the hell out of them.

Next update will hopefully be pictures of the Engineer's Chimera. Again shamelessly ripped off from Bungaroo - it is basically a trojan with a chimera turret, only difference from his being that I scratch built the upper hull and rear, rather than paying forgeworld for the kit!!

The chimeras do look good. The AC turret on there gives it a modern APC look being set back further.

Really nice looking Kreig so far mate. Its always nice to see a well painted IG army and i think the Kreig forces just add that little bit extra. The traditional grey paint job is always a winner when it comes to them too. Can't wait to see more.

    Cheers,

    Re: Krieg 60th Assault Korps

    Thanks for the support guys!

I have got one of the chimeras up to the stage of weathering it with powders and the other has had a pin-wash with oil paint and needs blending now, so they are moving on OK.

As promised in my last post, here is the 3rd Chimera, this is the transport for my new Engineers squad, which I am going to probably use as veterans.

These guys are responsible for providing field repairs to the tanks and transports of the 61st Mechanised Infantry and this particular squad will now also be providing field support for the attached leman russes and macharius tanks of the 4th Tank Company.

The idea for converting a chimera/trojan as a fighting transport for an engineers squad is not a new one and I got the idea from Bungaroo's log.

As you can see I have built the chimera body as normal, up to the point you would for a basilisk - i.e. the top plate and rear door have been left off. Instead of the bottom plate that has the door hinges on I have used the bottom plate from the basilisk, except it has been turned around so the long plate is the floor and the small lip come up at 45o.

I then built a basic box out of 0.5mm plasticard and the top plate from 1mm plasticard to make it look a bit more heavy duty.

I scratch built the heavy bolter mount in the same way and the standard chimeras (above). The top driver's hatch is from a 1:48 KV-2 kit.

I used a saw to remove the original top hatch and the top plate for the gun mount from the original top plate in the kit and then just glued these into place.

Most of the detailing is from the accessories sprue, apart from a spare autocannon barrel that I scratch built and put onto the side. I figured that keeping their guns firing would be one of the primary concerns of the 61st Motorised infantry!

Unfortunately I can't find anywhere near me, or on my favourite webstores that has black Army Builder primer in stock and I am all out, so this baby will be stuck at this stage for a while.

Some excellent work here, Bungaroo is of course a master but YOU have made these models your own with some nice schemes, conversions and some excellent guidance on painting and modelling!

I particularly like the work you've done with that Centaur and the infantry in general- I think I will bear in mind your method of painting the guns.

Thank you for the guidance on how you're doing what you're doing and keep up the good work.

    Re: Krieg 60th Assault Korps

    Thanks everyone for the comments.

@ Jihad_Ragsta - I'm going to try and keep up the level of info about the painting, I have been subscribed to Bungaroo's log for ages and I think it is a fine example of how to do some sweet projects but let everyone else follow and repeat what you have done. Some of the guys on here have crazy skills and it is a joy to follow what they put together (tinners, tommygun..) but maybe 'normal' modellers will struggle to replicate what they do, but I am still learning (after 18 odd years of gaming!) so I'm very much going for a "here's what's worked for me, its not that difficult, maybe have a go" type of log.

@ Commander Zane - nice Salamander, fits the look of the army well.

OK, so unfortunately I haven't got any photos of stuff I am currently working on (painting chimeras and a squad of engineers), but here are some picture of my enclosed Basilisk conversion I did quite a while ago.

I modelled the interior and made the doors at the rear openable.

I learnt a lot making this model, I made loads of mistakes with plasticard cuts and sizes and it is a bit cobbled together! I made the opening doors by making some 1mm thick strips of plasticard with holes drilled in them and glued them to the hull and a set to the door and then made an "axle" of brass rod that thread through the plasticard so that the door hinged around it.

I painted the base coloured as a city camo pattern

The imperial city ruins in my old club were painted shadow grey and drybrushed grey, so the tank camo did blend in really well.

It is painted with my army mix of about 3:1 shadow grey/chaos black and the camo fade is very thin space wolf grey. This was built up in a few thin layers as I don't have an airbrush, but wanted an airbrush style faded/feathered - camo pattern. OK its not great, but my Medusa with the same pattern looks pretty decent one it has been masterclassed with weathering.

I'm hoping to have some more upto date pictures soon, although my next post may well be a showcase of my collosus conversion based on a 1:48 Russian KV-2 tank.

EDIT: I probably should mention that the logic behind having mobile artillery such as basilisks and medusas is that the force is an assault one, so needs to be more rapid than the static earthshakers and other towed guns could be. Hence they have the (much cheaper!!) tank versions rather than the FW guns.

    Thanks for looking!
