Covering Fire (hopefully) does some painting (Salamanders, Word Bearers, Alaitoc)

[Covering Fire]

Welcome to my humble painting log! Here I'll slowly work my way through the stacks of miniatures lying around my house.

My plan is to use this log as motivation to keep me going (one has to try at least...)

But let's start with something I recently DID manage to finish! A squad of Iron Hands space marines. I don't really collect Iron Hands (Salamanders are my SM army), but I wanted to paint a squad for some reason...

I intended to paint them like GW did, so the main colours are Chaos black and Chainmail with a Badab black wash. Some details were picked out in Dwarf bronze to add contrast. I decided to use only cold colours (i.e. no red for the eyes!), so I used Ice blue for the lenses.

On to the next project: a Word Bearer sorcerer! I've just applied a few basecoats yet and will get into the details soon.



I'll do my best keep updating here, but other things always seem to get in the way somehow.

While continuing work on my sorcerer I decided not to use the fairly static pistol arm the model comes with (to the right in the pic). Instead I wanted to do something different, and after digging around in my bitz box I found a metal hand from the new SM terminator librarian (I gave him a storm shield, so the hand was never used). I figured this would make a good "doing-a-mystic-gesture-with-the-hand-pose" so I attached the hand to a plastic CSM arm as you can see in the pic below.

nice Iron Hands squad and i really like the Word bearer pose. the hand reaching ou is a good gesture for a sorcerer

Some updates tonight - I've been working on the sorcerer some more and here is the current status:



For the red I used a basecoat of Mechrite red followed by Red Gore. Otherwise its mostly Boltgun metal, Brazen brass and Chaos black. The metal areas have been washed with Black ink.

For the left arm I had this idea of magical purple-pink fire flowing from the palm of the sorcerer's hand. Not finished yet, but here is a WIP shot:



The "flame" is the furry hair-thing hanging from the bottom of the plastic CSM chainsword. When I turned it upside down it looked kind of like a flame.

I still have to work a bit more on the colours of the flame, but I think it looks rather good so far.

that is nice how you made that purple flame and now i have an idea for what to do with the hair bits i clip off the chainswords.

Update time!

Finished the sorcerer tonight, and I'm rather pleased with the result.

Getting the colours right on the flame was tricky (especially with my limited experience in blending), but I think it turned out OK. I started with a coat of Liche purple at the base of the flame, then I added Warlock purple, Tentacle pink and finally Skull white at the top. I then washed it with a small amount of Leviathan purple to tie the colours together a bit. Finally I gave the flame a coat of gloss varnish.

Well, here he is - ready to hurl pink fire of Tzeentch at the enemy!











The small white dots on the armour are meant to be texts and passages from the Book of Lorgar (as the Word Bearers are a religious bunch).

On to the next project then. I think Vulkan He'stan is next in line...

Sofar I've only undercoated Vulkan, but since this pic was taken I've also removed mould lines and flash.



I'm planning to remove the flaming salamander head on his backpack (since it looks a bit silly imho) and the "streamers" on the spear.

Next step will be to basecoat the armour with Knarloc green.

Time for an update!

I've bascoated Vulkan with Knarloc green and then Snot green. I've found that painting Snot green directly on black requires lots of coats, so the foundation paints really speed things up!



The version painted by GW had a white cloak with brownish red scales, but I never liked that combination very much. Instead I'm planning on making it look a bit like leather (i.e. brown) with green scales. I've started with Calthan brown for the basecoat, and then I'll see how I proceed with it. I'm thinking Dark angels green or Scaly green for the scales...

The blue on the eyes does work much better then red lens, good call on that. The Sorcerer just looks amazing, great job on him. Is he just a mini painted for the hell of it or is he the start of an army? Looking forward to see how Vulkan turns out.

@Sparda - Thanks for the comments! I'm pleased with the blue lenses on the Iron Hands (seems like everyone has red lenses these days). The sorcerer is not the start of a new army, just an addition to my existing Word Bearers force.

I've done some painting this morning, and here's the current status. Still very WIP, but it's coming along nicely.

Colours used so far: Knarloc green, Snot green, Dark angels green, Scaly green, Calthan brown, Snakebite leather, Bleached bone, Devlan mud, Red gore, Boltgun metal, Shining gold, Scorched brown and a few others!

I painted the scales on the cloak Dark angels green, washed it with Orc flesh wash (old colour!) and drybrushed with Scaly green. Finally I added some Skull white to the Scaly green and highlighted.

Next I'll add the head and the the left arm, and finally the spear arm.

I quite like your job on the seargant of the marine squad.
The bionics and the lens are very nice indeed :-)
The sorcerer could do with highlighting or maybe a freehand on his big red helmet, though, I think :-).

@Nocturn - Glad you like my Iron Hands! The Sorcerer really has a big red helmet doesn't he? I've thought along the same lines...I'll see if I go back and do something about it later. Maybe some more highlighting as you suggest.
