DREDD
(Saw this at an advance screening last night, introduced by Karl Urban and Alex Garland).
The film is fantastic, yes it's not spot on to the comic world thanks to budget concerns, but Urban nails Dredd absolutely dead center. It's violent, dark but also very funny in places, Dredd has a very dry sense of humour and his interactions with Anderson are some of the best bits of the film. The 'slo-mo' scenes are very 'trippy' compared to the rest of the film and the 3D works well (not a fan personally but I liked it here). Special effects are great, nothing jarring, and early concerns about the Lawmaster bike are put to rest - it may not be faithful to the comics but it's one badass bike and sounds phenomenal.
I highly recommend this to anyone thinking of seeing it!
Watch!
Interesting. I've been desperately hoping Dredd wouldn't suck - the trailer they released did nothing to ease my concerns, looking like it was done on a made-for-tv budget, but this is the first 'real' review I've heard.
It's still on 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 10 reviews, I expect this will drop once the more mainstream reviews start appearing, but it's a good start. Think of it as in the same vein as District 9, a smaller budget film but with alot of heart and effort put into it by its makers.
I'm really happy about that. I skipped Total Recall because it got so lousy reviews and was afraid that Dredd would be more of the same. Thanks.
(Though in this case, it wouldn't be difficult to compare favourably with the original film.)

Lion: Hey Russ, you'll never guess what!
Russ: Yeah, I know! Magnus is a traitor! To think that he could accuse our beloved brother Horus of turning against us. Impossible! But don't worry. I have taken care of it, Horus asked me to destroyed Prospero and I have. Magnus shouldn't be bothering us again.
Lion:... actually, I was going to say that Magnus was right. Horus has turned to Chaos, 7 other Legions have joined him and he has destroyed 3 Loyal Legions already!

Beneath Loch Ness
Not sure if this is the same one that you guys BigbyWolf recommended, but it did have a Scottish guy going under water to battle the monster wearing blue face paint and how many of those can really be out there? Here is a quick synopsis, Case Howell is called to the Loch by his employer after Case's mentor is killed there in an underwater diving accident. Hijinks ensue.
This movie wasn't content to have a killed Pleisasaurus (sp), no they had to prove how BA their monster was by having it kill a regular Nessie. Of course, the authorities find definitive proof that a dinosaur escaped extinction to be found alive in Loch Ness; and no one cares. Yup, no one cares. Other than that headscratcher, the movie follows the JAWS template by the numbers.
It probably goes without saying that eh CGI is terrible.
Not exploitative enough for a creature feature, and was clearly aiming for the SyFy channel.
Pass Not incompetent or exploitative enough to be entertaining.
Planet Hulk
Hulk is exiled to an alien planet by the Avengers. Hulk proceeds to smash for about an hour of an hour and twenty one minute running time.
I won;t both with the plot, as it is a pretty standard Gladiator movie plot.
Not deep, but entertaining in a visceral way.

Freedom Writers (2007)
Recently I happened across one of the abolutely worst films I'd ever seen and I even watched that one in cinema back then. I zapped through TV some day recently and saw this silly film on the rather new German "women's tv channel" (which mostly consists of reruns of Desperate Housewives, the new Beverly Hills series and tons of Emergeny Room in no particular order which I found nice because I really like the first four, five seasons of that) and cought this weird film called "Freedom Writers" with Hilary Swank on screen and all of a sudden it hit me - that was this god-awful MTV produced piece of garbage film an aquaintance and I watched years ago because the film we originally wanted to see was sold out.
Anyhow, let's see if I remember the plot right.... it takes place in 1994 in L.A. where a high school teacher (Swank) gets a new class which is diverse in several aspects, mostly problems. She teaches them how not to get involved with gangs and how to be tolerant and nice and to write poems or short stories or stuff like that. In a super-weird turn, they bring in Holocaust survivors to speak in front of that class which makes those rascals become smart and thoughtful rather than rowdy and raunchy.
Doesn't sound unlike Dangerous minds, does it? Well, is it much less than you'd think because Dangerous Minds isn't as annoying. I don't like Hilary Swank much to begin with. Add to this a film that "has much of the street in it" in the way that it's portrayed like it always is in highly polished films or tv series, really dumb dialogue, not a single likable character and the fact that nothing that's really reminiscent of it being 1994 in the film is to be found. Oh, and the cuts. This is one of the things I remember the most: Unrelentless, quick cuts every two seconds. For a film that judging from the plot and theme should probably be slower it's even weirder how they cut and filmed this. This film is really made like something that's meant to be shown in class to really stupid kids who are hopped up on energy drinks and smartphone apps just so the teacher doesn't have to bother with these brats for 90 minutes. There is NO merit to this film. It's preachy without saying anything that hasn't been said already 15 years earlier by every single film on this topic (and there are lots. All this film does is throw in the Holocaust for no particular reason and without all that much respect the topic would deserve. It's more like a boogeyman story. "If you're not nice to each other the Nazis will come!"). Horrible, horrible film. It's overly long (felt like five hours to me), pointless, offensive to your eyes and brain and exhausting to watch. And for some odd reason it's got a seven point something rating on IMDB. I really wanted to just walk out. Us were the only two people in the room anyway but my company berated me because you don't walk out on movies and I would usually agree. I've sat through nervewreckingly bad films but each time it was an experience. With this film though I just wanted to get out of the room.
Don't Watch
Mat Ward Fact #64001- Mat Ward has been described as willowy with elven features.
I've seen the (The Beast? The Monster?) Beneath Loch Ness, and it's tough to think the gung-ho guy who ludicrously puts on blue woad and a kilt benath his diving suit to fight the monster in a harpoon faceoff at the end is Patrick Bergin. So now you know what happened to that guys' career...
A mini review: Phantasm
I first saw when I was about 12/13, and it's an ultra-low budget mystery-horror with sci-fi overtones: a troubled boy called Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) in a small town, dealing with the death of his parents not long before begins to think there's soemthing strange about the newly arrived mortician (Angus Scrimm) and soon uncovers he is some kind of alien or inhuman being, vastly strong and with a horde of hooded dwarves and collection of flying silver balls with extendable blades and drills. He also raises the dead, changes gender, and has yellow blood... But exactly what he is or why he does all this, for which you'd expect a long and complicated explanation, is never made clear, and this is one of the main strengths of the film. Mike convinces his restless brother and their friend, after they're attacked by a huge unconvincing fly-monster, and they set out to confront the Tall Man, which is the only name they have for him.
The film is a low-budget indie film, and despite having some wooden acting and a pretty bad script and dialogue manages to be genuinely creepy, largely due to the bizarre and unconventional sci-fi elements in place of ghosts or genre-typical shocks, effective cinematography, and Angus Scrimms' portrayal as the Tall Man, a performance comparable to some of Christopher Lee or Boris Karloffs' horror roles in that it is all dramatic glowering presence, with few lines throughout the film and little apparent characterization given in the script.
The film also has a purposeful dream-like style and non-linear structure, living up to the title, although apparently the original running time of the film was three hours, being as much drama as horror, and much editing of scenes may have added to this. Overall, this is a great example of a late 70s B-movie that excels at atmosphere without resource to much budget or big effects.
When I saw it, it was The Evil Beneath...but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few variations on the title kicking around.
As for Phantasm, it's a great film, the series decreases in quality, but overall some great cult viewing. I got the special boxed set a few years back, comes very nicely presented:

DREDD
Wow. It may not be perfect aestheticly to the comics, but it nails the tone and feel of the world. The trailers really don't do it justice. The soundtrack does its job, not being noticable but steadily building tension. The 3D works and the humour is spot on as well, if a bit toned down from the comics. It earns its 18 certificate as well.
In short its the film fans have been waiting for and that you have to see if you like action films.
Just a shame its going to be annihilated by this weeks other releases
That there were about 80 people in the cinema was about 50 more than I was expecting. This may get a sequel as it will probably sell well when the DVD comes out, but I can't see it making its budget in cinemas alone.

Dredd
Only available in 3D where I am.
Overall pretty good, I was relieved more than anything. Karl Urban does well - keeps helmet on, keeps Dredd grimace throughout, doesn't act all emotional, and looks the part. The baddie is really nasty without displaying plot-required stupidity. The block is used really well, particularly the pants-wettingly high central shaft - best use of 3D I've seen.
Not as futuristic as the comics - its all sh*tty modern cars - no hovercars, robots, aliens.
The look is more realistic than the comics, the judges lose the theatrical shoulder pads etc, and go for a slimmed-down black SWAT look. It works really well.
Anderson psychic thing was OK. As with the comics she is more human than Dredd, but if anything she was a bit too human. Although she is only a cadet in this movie, so will have doubts and wilt under Dredd's gaze, she was raised from childhood to be a badass fascist enforcer. She wouldn't have been displaying that kind of weakness in front of citizens.
If the film follows the tone of the comics, they have clearly changed a lot since I read them. People die in all sorts of inventive ways, never featured. Maybe they are much grimmer these days.
The stoy as a whole reads like Assault on Precinct 13 but on the criminals' turf. I'd have prefered more opportunity for Dredd-ness; he barely arrests anyone, by the first 30 minutes he has given up trying to bust anyone and just shoots everyone he sees. You could pretty much have changed the setting and have Robocop/Dirty Harry/John McClane do this. Hopefully there will be a sequel and we can explore MC-1 a bit more.
For the record, Mrs Patriarch fell asleep part way through, even with the shooting/screaming/'splosions. Suspect this is a blokes film.
Verdict: Watch (in 3D)
The Debt
Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington and others. Thriller about a pre-Mossad Israeli snatch squad operating in East Berlin. Mirren and her team are sent to bring a Nazi doctor back for trial; the film is less about the action, and more about the team working together, and dealing with the aftermath. Many years later they have been feted by their country, but the three of them have unfinished business...
Very good, and highly recommended.
Verdict: Rent
Depends on the bloke, I suppose - and the missus; I went with a friend and his wife, they both enjoyed it.
District 9 has a lot to answer for, visuals-wise. I did read somewhere that they tried CGI-in in more megablocks, but they lost any sense of scale - spacing them out like that made them loom more. As for a sequel, Karl Urban wants it to feature the Dark Judges, apparently.
