ANNOUNCING:The next INDY GT ARMIES book-call for modelers/illustrators

Hi all, we are now gearing up to begin work on the follow up to the Indy GT Dwarfs of Chaos book. It will be a "Storm of Chaos" style book with multiple lists covering most of the lost races from earlier editions of WFB, such as Cathay, Fimir, Halflings, Amazons etc.

These army lists will not be intended for use in GTs, as was the case with the Dwarfs of Chaos book, but will still be held to the same standards as that book when it comes to playtesting, artwork, writing and modeling. The play test lists will be released periodically throughout the year, with the final lists being published in early 2011. Look for an announcement coming soon on how to become involved in play testing.

We are currently looking to see who would be interested in:

    • creating converted and painted models and/or armies from current ranges of GW figures
    • contributing illustrations

If you are interested in contributing, please shoot me a PM with your name and email address. Once we have a mailing list together, I will send out more info.

    Thanks!
    Matt Birdoff

The dedication of your group to the hobby is admirable. I think you should be very cautious which possible copyrighted terms you use (eg, fimir, cathay) etc. GW has a pretty long list of copyrighted terms. Also you have proclaimed that you are producing a product that is derived from earlier editions of WHFB.

Your post has cease and desist written all over it. I am not criticizing what you are trying to accomplish but suggesting you need to be more careful what you publicly state, for your own protection.

GW's legal page encourages you to write your own rules so long as they are obviously unofficial. The big unofficial stamp on the front takes care of that.

@mattbird: What motivated this project over a GT Dogs of War list?

Re: ANNOUNCING:The next INDY GT ARMIES book-call for modelers/illustrators

thanks for your concern; we are totally in the clear regarding creating fan-made rules and such, as it is allowable under GW IP Policy. We're not selling anything, nor using any GW artwork or reprinting any GW material, hence in the clear.

    a couple of things;

    • there is a DoW online site that is doing a full book themselves, and we didn't want to compete with that, at least at the moment.

    • The DOW list is still pretty flexible and playable, unlike the CD list which has badly aged.

    • an opportunity has come up to coordinate these with Tales of Battle magazine, which I'll let Ben Burns announce when the time is right.

    • doing these lists seemed like more fun

Re: ANNOUNCING:The next INDY GT ARMIES book-call for modelers/illustrators

Well, legally you look perfectly safe. Halflings, Amazons and Cathay are all uncopyrightable, and the day GW sues someone over the use of Fimir is the day I eat my own toenails. Also, the whole "unofficial" tag will help brush that off.

However, I must say that I wince when looking at the races you've chosen. Halflings? Amazons? Fimir? I appreciate you're going for a theme of "lost armies" here, but there's a reason they're lost. Namely, that they sucked.

I mean, Halflings should basically be a pallette-swapped, less primitive and masochistic Gnoblar Horde, I don't even know what to do with Amazons, and Fimir are No Just No as far as I'm concerned. I have no doubt you'll pull it off, I just think that your efforts could have been better spent on other lists.

Mind you, I have a GSed Fimir model, if you really want pics.

EDIT: Cathay isn't included in the "lost armies" theme, but it's been done so many times that I honestly can't see how you're going to avoid going over old ground.

Hey Matt, just wanted to commend you guys on putting this kind of effort into these types of things. I've had the utmost respect for you and your crew(s?) since I found your Warmongers site a few years ago.

I'm assuming a Kislev appearance is in the works here?
    Maybe even an Araby list?
Will we get to bow down to the Crustacean Overlords?
Or are we just looking at GW/Citadel model ranges here?

Hell, I suppose I'd just be chuffed about having a new Kislev/Cult-of-Ulric type list.

Re: ANNOUNCING:The next INDY GT ARMIES book-call for modelers/illustrators

I believe Nippon not Cathay, was in the old Warhammer Armie s3rd edition armies book, which seams to be where Hobgoblins, pygmies, Zoats and "GASP" Half-orcs.

I think this is a great project. Although this will be more of a stretch to expect someone to paint and model one of these forces. There was a whole bunch of Chaos Dwarf armies out there to support the last book . . . Is this going to be an "allies" supplement or full blown lists. . . I think suplemental rules on Allies would be pretty interesting, including the ability to take from any of the other army lists as well.

Re: ANNOUNCING:The next INDY GT ARMIES book-call for modelers/illustrators

they'll be done up as Allied Contingents, as per the old rules. We'd also make sure when doing the lists that they can be proxied as other armies, Cathay could be played as HE, for instance.

The full list of races is not finalized, but it's basically:
    Fimir
    Grand Empire of Cathay
    Pygmies
    The Hobgoblin Dominion
    Halflings of the Moot
    Fishmen
    Imperian Nippon
    Daemons of the Southern Wastes
    Zoats
    Amazons

and we're open to swapping some out for others like Kislev, etc.

I realize many of these have been done by others before, but that's ok.

Yes, it will be harder to get the painted and modeled forces together than it was for CDs. That's why I'm posting announcements well ahead of time, looking for those willing to contribute. And like I say, these will be playable as other armies as well.

And have faith! Fimir is first, and I guarantee you will like the direction.

Much as I think this is an admirable project, it should be in fantasy discussion. It can come to announcements when it's finished

As I suggested over on CDO, I think you should split that list in two, something like this:

    Book 1
    Grand Empire of Cathay
    Imperial Nippon
    Daemons of the Southern Wastes
    Kislev

    Book 2
    Fimir
    The Hobgoblin Dominion
    Halflings of the Moot/ Pygmies
    Fishmen
    Zoats
    Amazons

Doing it this way would mean that people would have less time to wait to see the lists they might actually want to play

I'm curious....aside from being an excuse to make more balanced daemons, how would daemons from the southern wastes differ from those from the northern wastes?

Re: ANNOUNCING:The next INDY GT ARMIES book-call for modelers/illustrators

Ice demons maybe? Or Killer Penguins! But seriously, in some of the older books there were all sorts of demon designs that got weeded out as GW focused chaos more, and they would be fun to bring back.

    I'm curious, too...

we'll be releasing 1 playtest list every other month, so some of these are literally 2 years away.

Obviously, the Daemons of the Southern Wastes follow the other Four Chaos powers, Enrohk, Hsenaals, Elgrun and Hctneezt.

You had me at Fimir. I look forward to seeing the fruits of such labors. If I deduce any way to contribute (not likely, but stranger things have happened), I'll let you know.

I have made some Araby models. Just go to my log if interested ( they are made from GW minis and scratch so they are tournament legal). I'm planning to do more in the future.

This is an awesome idea. If you need help with anything halfling wise let me know. I have HUGE halfling army and I miss the old days when GW actually supported crazy armies like this.

Cathay squeezed into just one chapter may not do them justice.
Anyway, are you aware of this fullsized fan-made Cathay army book:

Sounds great. I would love to see widely accepted Allied contignet rules (have a few of those cooked up myslef). Any progress towards a website or other "endorsement" log listing what tournaments/clubs endorse and will use your rules?

I've been cooking up an Ind list. I've got it all sorted out as a proxy Chaos Mortal list and am scuplting Elephants(proxy Chariots), Tiger headed Ogres (proxy Chaos Ogres), Ganeesh (Proxy Daemon Prince or Shogath), Sisters of Kali (Chose Warriros, modeled as witch elves with extra arms) . . . got the whole list worked out really, just in the (lengthy ;-) ) conversion process . . . Would be nice have allied rules for these too . . .
