Finall, a way to play Eldar! Hopefully they'll follow with ranger outcasts.

Check back often over the coming months as we preview The Soul Reaver, and look for it on store shelves late in the second quarter.

Darn it, so it's roughly 2-3 months away. Ah well, playing with the Dark Kin is bound to be fun .

I wonder, though - you'd think that craftworld or outcast eldar would be among the first playable xenos. Yet they were missing from Into the Storm, and how we do get some pointy-ears it's the biggest psychopaths of the lot. Makes you wonder if there's a reason FFG is so cautiously avoiding them.

They are waiting for the new Eldar Codex? I don't know, a lot of people have asked the same question: why one of the iconic, intelligent races are is never getting playing attention?
Why are the Eldar always depicted as adversaries/allies?

Possible answers: they are difficult to represent. But they are putting out Dark Eldar!
They don't fit in the existing games? Well, an Outcast or a Craftworlder Psyker could easily fit in a (high-level) Radical Acolyte cell or in a Rogue Trader Explorer team.
They are waiting for a new game, centered on them? A lot of people were expecting something like that after Black Crusade, but as it stands, by this time of the year, FFG should have already announced the forthcoming Warhammer 40.000 Roleplay iteration. Yep, we have to take in account that FFG could be concentrating its RPG resources on a Star Wars game, but still no news... Yet, FFG seems to have generally slowed its releases, in the last few months (not that I was expecting for them to keep up such a busy schedule forever, particularly so in a bad economic time and with their resoucers stretched along so many different types of products: board games, living card games, RPGs, novels, game accessories...).

We really don't know, we can only speculate.

Actually, there is something else that is weird about this. I realize most of the adventure will be happening on DE "turf", but I wonder if they will make any adjustments to the current mantra that the Dark Eldar are being "drained" outside of the webway. This would naturally make them unsuited for any long-term service with a rogue trader, who's traveling in realspace with warp jumps. I am curious whether FFG will acknowledge that, try to handwave it with some talent or items, or will change it.

Well, they are "drained", but they can "replenish" themselves by nom'ing on someone else's suffering. Perhaps playing a Dark Eldar will mean you'll have to revel in the pain you cause or something like that? A malus to your dice rolls if you haven't been in a fight in the last X days/hours?

I just want to express both my utter delight at a Dark Eldar Rogue Trader book (with PCs!) and my complete and total loathing of the cover art.

I couldn't agree more. It could be titled "Hungover Hag with severe hair problems waiting for the bus at 6 a.m."

    FFG: Only War-Merged to existing

So, FFG's announced the new 40k RPG they're coming out with. Bit of an odd one, and depending on how sadistic your GM is, you might have to roll up new characters on a regular basis.

Only War, wherein you play an Imperial Guardsman.

Hope your GM likes Gaunt's Ghosts and Ciaphas Cain. You'll only have to roll up a new character every OTHER game then.

Heeey, they took their sweet time - there've been rumors about only war for a long time now. Sounds good, but one thing struck me as rather weird. "Guardsmen may fight on a thousand nameless worlds, often outnumbered and outgunned by their enemies and fighting in some of the worst conditions that history has ever known".

Often outnumbered and outgunned? I thought we were talking about guardsmen, not marines . The guard can grind an enemy into dust by attrition and overwhelming man- and firepower. It isn't pretty, it isn't quite as heroic as some 300-like stand, but when you're the regular army of a galactic-wide Imperium and your soldiers are regular, unaugmented humans, that's how you do war.

Only war sounds funny - I can see a lot of people dying very quickly depending on how realistic they are.

"Alright guys, so you're ordered to assault the opposing trenchlines. You're all sprinting? Yeah, good choice probably. Roll for difficult terrain test...ah, well that's not good. Three of you stepped on land mines. Roll for damage...yeah just keeping rolling, you're gonna need new characters. Oh, and Jim, your guy slipped on some week-old entrails and twisted his ankle. You can't move for...oh, wait nevermind, a Titan exploded half a mile away, you're dead anyways. For The Emperor, good game and all that, let's grab some beers down at Murph's..."

    Ha.

The rulebook should be free, but charge $5 per character sheet. FFG will make $billions!

So Only War went from DH book to standalone game?

Re: FFG 40k RPGs Update thread

Only War sounds fun. The best games are the ones where you know you can die at any moment.

And any GM worth their salt will have every player roll up 3 characters. That way the game does not slow down when one dies. That being said it sounds more like a toned down Death Watch style game. Where the PCs will not be manning the front lines but rather going after specific targets. Where being "Special" can be it's own roleplaying challenge and reward.

    On a side note:
Including Xenos PCs is not that hard. As long as you and the GM know the background very well.

    Step one Stats:
Take the "Creature" baseline stats. Subtract 10 and replace it with a 2D10 roll. Example a base line 50 would turn into 40+2D10.

    Step two Class:
Look through all availible classes that already exist and pick the one that best allows that "creature" to advance properly.

    Step three Back ground:
Know the back ground and how it will be different then the human equivilent. Make the adjustments as needed.

    Step four Balance:
Most Xenos already have stats, abilities, skills and talents applied to them to show how they are different from the humans. Match these up to same or as close to the same as exists in the character classes. Charge the Xeno that amount of XP as a starting penalty. The cost for stats/unnatural stats can add up really quikly and so you should only allow those Xenos into higher level games. Where the penalty is offset by the amount of XP the player would have available to make his toon. Alternatively you can simply use the closest charater classes and play the game from the Xenos point of view. For example I run a Necron Death Watch game. Where the PCs compose a Necron Kill Team that goes on combat orientated missions. With the idea of a surgical strike here, here and here can do more large scale damage then sending in entire armies. I also run a "Pirate" Rogue Trader game with more then a few Xenos crew members and PCs.

With a Back Drop as big as 40K you can do almost anything once the Charaters and player are high enough level. So if you're a player, do the leg work and get all of te required information and talk it over with your GM. If you're the GM talk it over with your players and see what they would find interesting.

    Disclaimer:
When I chose to include Necrons in my "Universe" I did so with the idea that in the IoM the Necrons are activily trying to keep they're awoken existance secret. But have infiltrated nearly every aspect of the Empire.

That is weird...hopefully they don't split their attention too much. I'm not sure we really need another giant book reprinting mostly the same rules, when a sourcebook would do just as well.

It appears so. I have Dark Heresy already - and that is my only 40k RPG i own - so i was looking for IG to get their own book. However, I wasnt expecting it to be a RULEbook.

It wasnt needed (but ill buy it anyway). I would rather see Eldar or Orks to have their own rulebook for 40k RPG.

Re: FFG 40k RPGs Update thread

I'm find myself asking if this is the final nail in the coffin for Dark Heresy...

But... Another iteration of the Warhammer 40.000 Roleplay system on the Imperium? I was hoping we had already moved along with Black Crusade.
