Thread: Malifaux

    Malifaux

Anyone playing Malifaux? I just picked it up recently and it's awesome! The card mechanics really make for a more interesting game, allowing the player a bit more control over his fate. Not to mention the triggers, Strategies and Schemes, and other cool stuff. I wrote up a full review here: http://tabletopgeeks.com/malifaux-review/

I've also put up a page of some supplemental downloads for Malifaux here: http://tabletopgeeks.com/malifaux-downloads/

EDIT: I've also put up a review of the new Rising Powers expansion. You can find it here: http://tabletopgeeks.com/malifaux-rising-powers-review/

There are a few here. I have a few games under my belt, and am trying to get others to play so I can play more. I haven't been this interested in a game in years.

Have been an admirer of the miniatures for a while but have not done anything about it.

Sounds like it may be worth buying the rulebook next payday. Incidently, where can you buy the rulebook, none of my regular miniature sites have it?

    Edit : Found it.

I've played a few games with proxies and I really enjoy it, plus the rulebook is amazing, incredible art and story.

I really like playing as Rasputina, even though it was a steep learning curve. I really like spell slinging being a viable strategy without being overpowered or cumbersome for once!

Perdita is a cruel ***** but I've been getting more consistent wins against her as I get further up Tina's learning curve.

I'm hoping to get some of the actual minis for my birthday, probably Tina and Ramos' boxes with Joss and some kitties. Not to mention the incredibly awesome December Acolyte.

I don't know, no matter how much I tried I cannot get grasp of Raspy. So I bough a shedload of beast for Marcus. Only played one game, but it was visibly better. I actually knew what to do with the models, and idn't have to rely on rapsy alone to do damage.

I may have to cave and finally get Marcus, he is easily my favorite Arcanist Master (but when I used to play Privateer Press stuff, I was a Circle player, so it probably has to do with that)

Strange how around the Wyrd forums Marcus is considered the weakest arcanist master.

Raspy does really good with a cat themed list with prides and sabertooths.

One thing to note is this game really makes you pay attention to your victory conditions. I managed to hold one game to a draw despite being wiped out!

Last game I played was a blast. Used the Victorias box plus 2 gremlins vs Rasputina and a couple of new guys (a guy who could infiltrate and drain people's life energy to heal and a guy with 2 huge axes and a feather in his hair). I don't know too much about the infiltrating guy because he got gunned down by gremlins in 2 turns (a vast improvement on the last time I used them, when they missed their intended target and shot Victoria instead).

Rasputina used her explodey spell o' doom to kill both Bishop and Taelor in a single turn.

The Victorias are incredibly mobile. Theri action that allows you to move the other Victoria close to the currently active one won me the game. My Strategy was Treasure Hunter (2 VPs if the treasure's in my deployment zone at the end of turn 6; 4 VPs if someone's carrying it), so one Victoria ran in and grabbed it, then the other one moved back, and whisked her doppelganger out of danger. In addition, it allows you to charge one of them into melee then extract her so she doesn't get bogged down.

My only issue is that models which are pretty vital to various armies, such as Ronin and Young Nephilim, still aren't out. Perhaps I'm building this up as a bigger problem than it is, because it's affecting both the forces I use, but it's still annoying.

That would be the December Acolyte and Injun Joss respectively.

Ronin will be out soon, and young nephilim came out last month.

I'm with you there. It's something new and different, and it's rather exciting. I think it not only works well, but it adds a much needed extra layer of strategy that we haven't seen before.

What I really like is how completely objective-driven the game is. Last game, I still got a draw, despite having almost all the models dead, by virtue of completing all the objectives beforehand.

Yeah, I like that everyone has different objectives. The whole Strategy and Schemes thing is really cool. It's more than just trying to kill your opponent. Plus being able to hide your Schemes adds a sort of element of surprise.

The first time I played against my friends Pandora crew, I got my **** handed to me, we played it straight up with no Strategies or Schemes so that he could focus on still learning the rules.

Last Tuesday, we had a rematch with Strategies and Schemes, and he up'd his Pandora force to include Teddy, and I had him on his backfoot a good portion of the game. We tied in VP's, but it was much more of a satisfying game. This game is so much more fulfilling when played with objectives.

And the company support is excellent. If you have a qeustion on the rules, you can go to their forum, and get an official answer in a matter of a few hours. As opposed to GW, where you never get that answer.

    Re: Malifaux

Ok, so after reading some of the comments on this thread I have bitten the bullet and got myself the rulebook.

Have arranged for a couple of friends to come over and try it out (indoctrinate them). With that in mind I was planning on getting a few starter sets.

I was thinking I like the look of Neverborn & Resurrectionists and have an idea for a themed board, so for I was going to try and get my hands on McMourning, Nicodem and Pandora boxes.

My question is, in terms of actual gameplay can two crews from the same sect fight each other? I'm sure they can but just wondering if it would remain a satisfying game or if they tend to cancel each other out?

    Re: Malifaux

The masters in each faction are all different play style wise from each other, so there's no probs with them fighting between each other.

But if there's a few of you playing I'd recommend each person getting diff crews, makes it a bit more fun.

It really is a quite fantastic little game, I've picked up all the guild stuff and my mates have got all the other factions now. And the support that wyrd gives through their website is really good, and if you've got a problem with any of their minis they fix it quick as well.

There is no problem fighting among the same faction. I'll say though that while Pandora is good, she is not an easy master to do well with. All the models in her set are fragile, and depend on your opponent taking, and failing willpower duels, while in range of the special abilities of her and the woes.
