Do you know anyone nearby who plays the game? Because really, it is unlike any other game I've played, and possibly the best way to realise this is by watching it. As he mentionned you use cards, so in attack, I flip a card and you flip a card, and add stats to it to see if I hit you or not. But, I have a hand of cards I can "cheat" with if I dont like my result... But because your opponent doesnt know your cards, it feels a lot like poker, "ooh, I could attack him, but should I? What if he cheats in a 7 or more, I'm screwed. But he used this card back then... " etc.

The game is primarily about resource management more than anything else, and combo'ing certain stuff. I'd advise you have a look over the wyrd store and see anything that leaps out to you, because some of the models are gorgeous, and some are a bit mediocre, depending on what you like.

Also, the game has amazing fluff. AMAZING. I've played crews based on their fluff alone

    Jack
    Browncoat. And will be forever.

Not being funny, I bloody love Mantic Games

Yeah, we flew our space church across 500 light years to get to this planet taken over by the orks. Now we're going to drop from orbit in buckets and run out and shoot pistols and hit people in the head with chainsaws. Ultramarines!

In case you've not been over to the Wyrd site, they have the April releases listed there with pics. The Alt. Bete Noir is amazing, based on the art on the back cover of Twisting Fates

Actually, here's a link to the April stuff since no one else seems to have linked it:

    Re: Malifaux

I went to a gaming convention recently, with a group of friends. (report here if you're interested) On day 2 I picked up the rulebook and Viktorias boxed set. By the end of day three everyone else had picked up a least one box.

Very easy game to get into, due to the low buy in and 'ready to play' boxes. A couple of games have already been played and naturally we have also picked up the Sewers, Streets and Buildings of Malifaux scenery boxes. Hopefully I'll have some game reports later. The game is a lot of fun, with some excellent miniatures. Wyrd have also made it easy to get into the game, and easy to expand your force too. very clever and well thought through.

edit: I've since picked up the Sue figure from the new releases. Couldn't resist. Reading the card, the model has abilities with names such as Circle of Flames and Tread the Line. If you're not sure what the deal is, here you go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1BJfDvSITY

Wonderful game, Malifaux - excellent miniatures, no need for endless heaps of D6, inexpensive, lots of room for imagination - I play Lucius myself.

    Shameless plug time!

The next round of a tale of Skirmish painters is starting soon - you can sign up HERE.

Basically, paint one model a month and comment on everyone elses painted figs - really easy to do, and should get those crews you've been putting off painted up. I started off last year only wanting to paint up some freikorps and ended up painting 18 models to a pretty high standard, so in my view the system works

Gomez, that sounds very cool, such a shame I'm broke and can't afford to buy a camera right now to take pics of my models with (and I've given up on people promising to lend of bring cameras over since they never do) or I'd happily join in. Heck, I might also be able to paint more than a mini a month, I tend to be these days with getting 2 models done this week!

lovelorn, good to hear you're enjoying the game and Sue is indeed the Man in Black. if you look at the game you will pick out the odd bit here and there that is a homage to something else, but not usually as obvious as the Johnny Cash.

Right now I'm hunting down suitable models to be pirate mannequins and Coryphee for my pirate Colette crew. I already have a regular Colette crew, but I have to do them as pirates!

    Re: Malifaux

I have had no luck so far in tracking down suitable piratey Mannequin/Coryphee stand ins, however I have accumulated a few of the showgirls I'll be using.

Colette, but will be swapping the fan for something else and she'll be dancing on a treasure chest. I was going to have her dancing on a cannon, but it wouldn't fit on a 30mm base and still eave room for models to get within 1" of her, lol. Oh, and I'll be giving her a pirate hat since Colette LOVES her hates
    http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/freebo...prod_7401.html

Cassandra, smaller scale model, but sill work with a built up base.
    http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/m...ess-p-503.html

Margaret, Performer that died in Rising Powers, but she's still alive in this alt. story arc.
    http://www.freebooterminiatures.de/en/catalog/1092

Angelica, though I sill be getting rid of the skull under her right foot for something else... and I had to have at least on sexy pirate, lol.
    http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/troll-potion-1.html

Others will be coming from the Ron & Bones lines and other random models. It's the Mannequins and Coryphee that are giving me trouble as there does not seem to be anything suitable out there. I may end up converting a bunch of existing models, giving them hook hands, peg legs and so on for them to be Mannequins (or maybe get some monkey models, that might work! whilst the Coryphee may end up being dual sword wielding crazy pirate showgirls swinging and leaping form the rigging

    Re: Malifaux

    I was quite amused -

I picked up the aforementioned Sue model, as well as the Jackalope, for my Deadlands game, and when I brought the model up closer to my face to check for flash I took a whiff and...

That distinct Iron Wind Metals aroma came to my nose.

Sure enough, Wyrd Miniatures has their minis subcontracted out to IWM.

On the other side, I've almost convinced both my sister AND my girlfriend to try out this game; they love the minis and it isn't too far of a jump to enjoying the game from there....

    Re: Malifaux

Hey guys, one of my friends has just picked up Malifaux and is insisting that my gaming group play it.
He's bought the Lady Justice box too.

What's the standard points size for Malifaux?
Can you recommend me a starter box and some add on monsters/henchmen?
I just play to get a starter box, some extra blokes and leave it at that really. But I'd like something that's fairly themed and fairly good to play too.

I like pretty much all the models. Although The Dreamer boxed set, Kaeris Boxed set and the Cult of December boxed sets all look good for a theme.

Basically, I need someone to say "Get this boxed set, bolt on this, this and this and you're done"

    Many thanks

    Re: Malifaux

    Well, okay:

Get the Dreamer, add some Daydreams and Stitched Together.

Get Kaeris, add a Soulstone Miner or two. Add Union Miners when they come out.

Get Rasputina, add an Essence of Power/ Wendigo and a Silent One. You can always add Kaeris later, as she and Raspy can be part of the same crew.

    Re: Malifaux

All those are good boxed sets and bolt ons to start. I will say the Dreamer can be a little to start with but once you have it down it is a good crew. The Rasputina load out is a good place to start also, a bit easier for the beginner also. Its not that the game is hard, it all the interactions between the models that is a bit tricky to get the hang of sometimes.

Standard points(or Soul Stone) levels are between 30 to 40. Most tourneys are at 35SS. although this year at Adepticon the Masters are at 30SS. That is a bit tight, i generally plat at 35,

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Re: Malifaux

Sholto - You're welcome! The Troll Potion model is one I had to get wjhen I saw it, though I would like to have been able to pay less for it, but it does fit Malifaux's 32mm scale quite nicely, plus it's a great model!

Turrican1983 - Your friend chose the easiest Master to start with when they bought the Lady Justice starter. Cult of December (Rasputina's starter) is also very easy to you, just use Ice Mirror to cast spells through your Ice Gamins and Ice Golem to pummel the enemy with magic and try to get the Overpower trigger as often as you can. So for additions, the Essence of Power, Silent One and Snowstorm are all good candidates (the latter also gives some boost to their very slow movement rates).

The Dreamer is a tricky one to start with as it involves using a lot of trick with positioning your Daydreams just right for Dreamer/Lord Chompy Bits to swap about and get 30+ inches a turn in movement so they can actually do something, Stitched Together work wonderfully with him though as do Teddies (since you can take as many of them as you like and in 50 point game I take 4 of them!). However, he works well with a number of models such as Alps (now nerfed so you wont lose friends when using them), Coppelius, Lelu & Lilitu (really do need to be fielded together), and Insidious Madness are all strong contendors that make his short list.

With Kaeirs, Union Minors and Soulstone Minors are the only real options right now However anything with the M&SU affiliation should work well.

Just don't start with Colette, you will need to add 3 Mechanical Doves and a pair of Coryphee (loosely pinned or magnetised to also make a Duet) to make it worth taking her to the table, making it a expensive crew to start with, plus the amount of trickery needed to use that crew effectively means you're in for a steep 6 - 12 month learning curve before you really start to win, lol.

As for your average points (SS/Soulstones) level for games, the absolute smallest is 25SS and he average will range from that to 50S (tournaments, like already mentioned being around 35SS and have VERY tight time limits and about half of tournament games are abandoned half way through). With any strter box and a totme though, you can easily play 25SS.

Also rememebr you can download the rules manual for free from www.malifaux.com it is the full rule book, just missing the diagrams.
