reading this thread, and briefly reading the review, the game seems extremely similar to warmachine/hordes, but with a different setting and theme. Am I wrong about this?

Very. For one, there's no such thing as a unit, every model acts on its own and I'm pretty sure every single one can cast spells. Then there is the biggest thing, the card system, which pretty much makes the game. Then well just all the small differences. (I'll start naming them if I have to.) it's like saying WM/H is extremely similar to Warhammer 40k except for the setting and theme.
I played warmachine a couple times when it was brand new, and I see no real similarities, aside from the bases. They are identical.

Well, they both use models with lots of special abilities and combos. However, when in WM combos and special skills are often mean unto itself, here they usually work to enhance said model's basic capabilities in combat. Well, apart from spells. And that's all the similiarities really.

In case you haven't seen it yet I did an interview with Nathan Caroland, one of the creators of Malifaux.

What crews does everyone play? I'm about to start painting my Redchapel (Seamus) crew shortly.
I have the Ortegas, my girlfriend has Pandora.

McMourning's body thieves. I really like a lot of the crews though so eventually planning to have Pandora and Nicodem crews as well as a load of mercs including the Victoria's.
I am also very excited about the terrain scenery possibilities in Malifaux so looking forward to working up a themed board.

I have the Viktorias painted, and played with once. Waiting for the Ronin to cap off the crew.
Still working on my Ramos/Leviticus techno crew, but if Infinity preparation for con season takes up my hobby time they may not see a brush again, till august.
All the best freaks are here...Please stop staring at me.
I'm planning to get the Lillith set soon, or maybe Lady Justice. They're all pretty nice sets though. I'll probably get them all eventually. At only $30 a box, that's not too hard to do. Now painting them on the other hand, is a whole different story.

I think both of those could be fun, if they had the right builds. The starter boxes aren't the best though. But Zoraida's model is kinda disturbing.

I have Sonia's crew myself.
Merin moves in mysterious ways
Just looking for a bit of advice from more experienced players as I am really just starting up, as mentioned I have mMcMourning, the other crew I am most drawn to is Pandora's but I know it would be very difficult to learn with. As a result I was thinking of getting the Victoria's set as this could be used as a seperate crew for trying out games with friends who don't have thier own but also could be used as Mercs for my original crew.
Does anyone have any experience playing with/against her? What were your thoughts?
She has a fairly steep learning curve, but she is devastating when used properly. The trick is that she relies on the enemy failing wp duels, while in range of her and the sorrows to deal damage. Kade is pretty good in combat, but he's really there for his harmless ability, which forces more wp duels. Linking a sorrow to each of the other three is a good idea, since it makes sure that at least one is near any of the rest of the crew, and don't spread out too much, if it can be avoided. That all being said, the highly objective based nature of Malifaux means that you can win some games without ever engaging the enemy, and you can lose, even if you wipe them out.

I've been using Pandy - two games so far with the standard box but I'm getting used to her.
As nightgant98c said, Pandy has a steep learning curve. You can't just run in and smash face (Lilith) or sit back and shoot the hell out of things (Perdita). Instead, you need to keep just out of reach of the opposing crew as you gradually drain their wounds from failed WP duels.
Most of the damage seems to come from Pandy (of course) and Candy, since they can potentially put out alot of WP duels in a given activation, not to mention all that damage from self loathing. Kade can do some WP duels too, but he mainly tends to be a face-beater, which can be handy if you need to engage a shooter or hold off other face-beaters.
I'm warming up to the sorrows. They are pretty easy to kill, but they're a support model in every sense, either taking hits for your other (more important) units or multiplying the damage done to enemy models from failed WP duels.
I've found that activation order is very important for Pandy. She tends to be very vulnerable to blast attacks and some masters have activated abilities that allow them to ignore WP-duels, which is Pandys primary line of defense. Fortunately, Pandy, Kade and Candy have pacify and/or incite, which forces models to either activate next or activate last. So you pacify the biggest threat/s (usually the master), meaning that by the time they activate, they're either dead, Pandy is well out of their threat range, or their activated abilities won't benefit their crew (most abilities last until the end of turn).
In terms of specific missions, Pandy's ability to get a free move every time she wins a WP duel means she can move up the table very quickly, meaning she's great in Treasure Hunt games, and I've heard she's a solid gal for Assasination schemes. Recontiorre (??) is tough for her though, thanks to her sorrows being insignificant.

I'll add that Teddy is a huge addition to a pandora crew. He's an even better beat stick than Kade, and much tougher. I'd alsao avoid playing against the Ortegas until you get the hang of it, as it tends to be a bad matchup for Pandora.

In the end my LGS didn't have either the Pandora box or the Viktoria's. I plumped for the Ortega's on the basis that the few games I had played had ended up in a mass brawl, and the Ortega playstyle seemed the total opposite of that.
Have any of you tried to introduce the game to others in your general gaming group? I am finding resistance from those generally used to dice based games but an enthusiasm from those that had "dabbled" with Wargames but hadn't previously stuck to it?
Edit: the advice won't be wasted, the Neverborn will be purchased soon enough.
Yesterday I finally got myself the rulebook, the Cult of December box (Rasputina's crew) and a fate deck. So I'm ready for a scrap. Any tips or advice out there?
There are too many seriously appealing models for this game so I will probably end up with a second crew, Som'er Teeth Jones is great (and I almost always end up with some variation of Orcs or Goblins for any game I play) and I love Nicodem's model.

Rasputina is a beast, but the gamin, and golem are a little trickier to use. Your crew is a little on the slow side, so strategies that erquire covering alot of ground(reconnoiter, treasure hunt) are going to be a little tougher for you.
I have tried introducing the game to others. The friend who played against me in my initial demo bought mini's the same day I did, but only because I did. Another friend doesn't like the diceless system, but is willing to give it a try again sometime.
