    Re: Malifaux

    Morning Wyrd people,

I've an Avatar question. If you end up being a blue cat person...wait, wrong Avatar.

*ahem* - Avatars are something that show up "in-game" as opposed to "start game" correct? Or was I told wrong? It's not an alternate version of the master (such as the Epic versions of Warcasters/Warlocks in Warmahordes), but something you can do over the course of a game?

If so, where do you find the rules for these? Can you still get by with just the core book and the cards, or do you need to pick up one of the expansions? Do the 1.5 rules (or whatever the newest core book is) cover Avatar information? I suppose a similar question with effigies - do you need a particular book to make sense of them?

    Thanks!

    Re: Malifaux

You are correct, an avatar manifests during the game and replaces its corresponding master. All of the stats and rules for avatars are in last year's expansion book, Twisting Fates. Each avatar mini comes with all their stats and manifest requirements printed on a stat card (or stat cards in their case). I'm not sure off the top of my head whether there are any rules for avatars which are only available in Twisting Fates.

There's a few restrictions not covered on cards (such as abilities of avatars can't be copied by other models), so you can't go completely without twisting fates.

One more thing to add for avatars is that in general, they're about equal to a master in power, just they change how the master functions (often going from pure caster to more of a combat master, or combat master to boosting other troops). The flexibility to decide whether to manifest or not is what you pay for in the 2SS cost of avatars. There's a few (Ramos and Sonnia) which are considered pure upgrades.

So if i want to see the stats before i buy the models i really need the expansions (or whatever they are called). Fair enough, they arent that different in cost to a WM army book.

Sorry for all the questions. If this is the wrong place let me know and i will go elsewhere (at moment am having problems registering on the malifaux forums).
You're welcome mate. Don't worry though, you're in the right place for posting anything Malifaux. I hope you manage to sign up with the Wyrd forums, you will learn a lot about the game, rules, models, etc over there plus it's a very friendly bunch of people

The big books are good value thoug hand the fluff far surpasses anything in the WM books (which I find rather bland and characterless), the sotryline as of the end of book three has leaft my bying to get my hands on book 4.

I will warn you though, The Dreamer is not a easy master to start with, but a little tip is to make use of the Daydreamers and Dreamer being able to activate one afte ranother without the opponent having a go and making good use of their ability to switch the Dreamer between his human and Lord CHompy Bits form, you can easily get it to move at least 20" a turn like that, but be wary of leaving him isolated. Chompy on is own can deal with just about anyhting, but 3 or 4 enemy models onhim will take him down in short order. With the use of Chompy and 2 Teddies (I have 4 in total, but never use more than 2 at a time in most games) I managed to take out most of a oppoents crew and win me a game using the Slaughter strategy (kill more points of them than they do of you). My first crew was Colette, another tough one to get to grips with, so just go with what you like the look of best and have fun, jut don't be afraid of losing at first until you get to grips withyour crew

    Re: Malifaux

With Gencon a few short days away, what pre-release items is everyone planning to order over the period?

Personally I am planning on plenty of the Ten Thunders range (crew box and Oiran being a must at the very least since the latter are Showgirls) with some Beckoners (to fill in as additional Performers) and the Rail Crew if my budget stretches far enough. I am leaving the books alone this year since they will be out before to long and I am not fond of paying more than twice the shipping just for ardering a book.

I should be doing an order for book, rail crew, ten thunder crew and a supplement box for each - metal gamin (in plastic, oh the irony) and the then thunder archers probably.

Gencon orders are now open on the Wyrd store. There is some lag, but it is much better thanm last year, took me about 10 minutes to do my order compared to about three quarters of a hour last year.

    I'll pass this time around.
The trees don't excite me at all and the rest I can simply pick up later (at a discount and without added shipping costs).
I'm a bit sad that I'm going to miss out on Miss Terious, but I'll live without one.

Yeah snap Emperor! Am tempted by picking up 2 crew boxes and stuff to get Miss Terious but will have to decide later today or tomorrow.

YOu will likely see Miss Terious on Ebay soon enough and with lucky they'll start pretty low around $20 like Miss Demeanour did last year. I have seen a few people on there making multiple orders to sell spares

Hmm...I really wanted to like those trees, but that price point is a bit ridiculous. Ah well, no fancy convention trees for this guy

The plastic sprues look good, though. I was worried.

The sprues do look good, but IMO they are too expensive for plastic minis with few or no additional options.

    Re: Malifaux

At least with Malifaux you only need 1 of each model, thought the cost for plastics is high I'm still buying them. The trees (you get 3 in the box with 2 each of the Nathan and Eric minis it seems) are a bit steep though, $50 and I would likely have ordered them.

I am very happy Miss Terious comes separate to the coffin though, it will make painting the model far more enjoyable.

    Re: Malifaux

There is $100 dollars worth of items I want, but.. I think I'm going to pass sadly. Mis Terious is lovely but I can't justify the shipping costs just for her when the model isn't as impressive as we've seen in the past.

As for price, thar doesn't bother me - I always found Malifaux to be reasonable price wise, and metal tooling isn't cheap. Metal prices however, have gotten ridiculous so I'd rather they switched and kept the prices steady for the next couple of years then be forced to push them up like other manufacturers have.

For what it's worth, the plastics are a harder and more expensive plastic than GW uses.

I wonder how necessary that is, though.

Could they have gotten by with the same plastic that GW uses? Could they have done the same with a cheaper plastic?

They could up the price exponentially and sell them in solid silver (), but they'd be overpriced for what they are: 28mm skirmish game miniatures.

The sprues remind me a bit of Gundam model kits - if it's similar plastic, I just think that would get annoying. It can be difficult to cut/convert...probably not a huge deal in Malifaux, but it does cause some versatility to be lost.

    Re: Malifaux

Gomez, if you avoid the books and terraclips then shipping is about $16 for the UK, at least my order was and so was another guys (and he ordered about $500 of things compared to my $105 order) so that isn't to bad and much cheaper than many other American retailers.

I have seen pics of the plastics, but not held them yet, looking forward to seeing them in person though.

loveless, Malifaux is 32mm so bigger than you said, but at least you only need to make 1 purchase of each model unlike many other games out there that rely on large units and often with a very limited range of sculpts thart I find off putting to say the least, lol.
