    Hrafn's Legion and Retribution Plog

    So it begins…

Welcome to my plog. Being my first and everything, I apologize for the inevitable technical issues and so on

I plan to show the repainting of my Legion of Everblight and my work-in-progress Retribution of Scyrah force. It will probably be a bit slow, since my time for painting is limited (kid, work and all that tedious stuff!). However, I am determined to finish both projects, so stick along and I will get to a conclusion some day…

First off is my Legion. This is mainly a repaint of an existing force. It used to be a cool blue/white colour scheme, but I got severely bored with painting it. So I decided to go for a warm red/brownish scheme with warm gold NMM (or attempts at it . DISCLAIMER: Yeah, I know. It’s the Skorne scheme….That was why I discarded it when I originally set out to paint it. This time around I decided to just ignore that, and lo and behold – the colour scheme fits the Legion minis very well IMO.

I start off with The Messiah, the recently painted Epic Thagrosh (note: base is not done yet):

That is just a fantastic mini. One of the best I've ever seen. I wanted to do it justice, so I have spend some 30+ hours on it.

As you may notice, I have not finished the base yet. I can't quite decide what to do with them. I have thought about a greyish rock look, perhaps with snow or dead grass. On the other hand, I am tempted to go for lava based...Input appreciated!

Warm-toned Everblight makes baby Thagrosh cry!

    Kidding

Big Thagrosh looks damn good. I haven't worked up the nerve to paint him yet myself.

As far as basing goes, I suggest going all out on the warmth and trying the lava scheme.

Next is a few random L
egion minis. These are mostly tests of the colour scheme which predate Thagrosh. As such, I didn't bother to clean them of their previous scheme, so bear with me on these..¨

Thanks. He is a little intimidating to paint. Not only is he obviously big and very detailed, but many areas on the mini are also a royal pain in the behind to reach once the mini is assembled. His right leg and leg armour is squashed behind the pimp daddy arm, yet clearly visible. Also, the weight of the mini make it a bit nervewracking to paint the underside of the wings since you have to turn it all the way around. But it's damn rewarding once done

Yeah, I have a growing feeling I just have to try that. Naively, I toyed with the thought that I did not have to strip the old bases as well...

Re: Hrafn's Legion and Retribution Plog

Given the title of the thread, I thought that I'd better also throw in a Retribution mini

    A Phoenix Myrmidon:

The base is not finished yet (notice a pattern here , but will be brown with leaves and undergrowth.

I have some more painted Retribution minis which will be uploaded soon(ish), and I have one unpainted Myrmidon sitting on my disk. The latter have magnetized arms and head so I can switch between Phoenix and Hydra configurations.

Re: Hrafn's Legion and Retribution Plog

Concerning my choice of colour scheme for the Retribution, I dismissed the official whitish one, as I simply found it ill-suited. White is simply a bad colour for large, curved and flat areas as they are found on the Myrmidons. Also, I believe that the turqouise glow-effect does not look that good either. Therefore, I decided to come up with my own scheme, which follows the same cool and muted general theme of the official PP scheme. As shown on the Phoenix above, I chose a desaturated mid blue (Trollblood Base) as the main armour colour, with light white-blue trimmings (Arcane Blue/White). Also, I found out that there is a reason why the glow-effect on the official mini seem misshapen at times....those groves are extremely fine, they cover easily and they require a damn steady hand to paint properly. I kind of gave up, at inspired by my Eldar, I resolved to paint the silvery "knobs" (capacitators?) containg the glow as jewels instead. I am quite pleased with the result - especially considering the alternative

Retribution Arcanist fresh from by varnishing - this time with a finished base :

Re: Hrafn's Legion and Retribution Plog

I finally had the time to work on my magnetized Myrmidon last night, so I thought I'd take a few WiP shots.

The parts of the Myrmidon in Hydra configuration:

    The assembled Hydra:

The other configuration is the Phoenix. I have left the parts for that configuration aside for the moment, as I probably won't need to field 2 Phoenixes in the foreseeable future

Re: Hrafn's Legion and Retribution Plog

Still working on the Myrmidon, so I gathered my Invictors for a group shot:

As you can see, I have only finished the minimum unit with UA, so I still need to finish 4 Invictors...I have the feeling that may take a while given that I am a bit tired of Trollblood Base at the moment

Oh yes, and I know the glow-pattern don't look to good...They are so damn fine that I have trouble doing them right with my degree (or lack of) brush control

Re: Hrafn's Legion and Retribution Plog

My second (and favorite) warcaster: Ravyn.

Still torn about the colour scheme though. I am not certain that light blue make for a good base for white...

The reason for Ravyn's colour scheme being different from the rest is that I want to differentiate between the various sub-factions making up the Retribution, ie. House Shyeel, Nyarr, the Mage Hunters and the various lesser houses. Ravyn is a former Fane Knight, so I figured she would wear different attire than for instance Vyros.

EDIT: And I apologize for the ugly mold line on her weapon - I'll fix it, I'll promise

While I am painting the magnetized Myrmidon (and repainting Ravyn ), I thought I'd keep this plog rolling by showing how the previous version of my Legion looked:

    - proving that I DID try a cool scheme first

I have to admit, I like your new scheme better - good on you, Hrafn.

Thanks! I did try a new technique for making the armour look more "metallish", ie. stark specular highlights, so it's good to hear it's working

After your last comment I knew just had to prove it But yeah, I do think the red/browinsh one looks better, even if it feels just..wrong...to paint Legion in warm tones

    The finished magnetized Hydra:

As you can see, this Myrmidon is painted in a different scheme than the Phoenix above. In background terms, I figured this Myrmidon originates with Ravyn and The Retribution, wheras the previous one is of House Nyarr to match the Dawnguard

    Thanks

There's more Retribution stuff coming right up, and I'm currently waiting for a box of Stormfall Archers to arrive. I'll post them when they arrive as I'm sure I'm not the only one curious as to how they actually look (given that PP has not shown a pic of them yet )

The blue is basically P3 Trollblood Base. The shade and highlights are made with simple layering and adding black or white respectively. In this particular case, I tried to make the final few layers (really merely dots) of highlights very stark in comparison to the preceeding ones to try and simulate the highlights made by metal materials. Finally, the blue was glazed with a very diluted TB Base - I used a glaze medium, but in my experience water works almost as well.
