    Sir_Lunchalot's first game of WotR!

Okay, so I finally managed to get a game in with my Gondor army, and my first impression of WotR is fairly positive. The mission was the one where you get points for killing companies, heroes, and the general, and the deployment was maelstrom.

    My 850 point Gondor army:

    Boromir

    Imrahil

4 companies of Minas Tirith warriors with champion, banner, and hornblower

2 companies of Minas Tirith archers with champion

3 companies of Knights of Dol Amroth with captain and banner.

    My friend's army:

Gothmog (I think, it's the orc who can copy heroic actions within 12 inches)

2 units of 6 companies of Moranon orcs. no command models

3 companies of warg riders (the legendary formation, I forgot what they're called)

    2 mordor Trolls

Turn 1: I chose to give Mordor priority, Gothmog's unit of orcs came on from my right flank, and one of his trolls came on from my board edge, near my right flank to support the orcs. My entire army came on turn 1, my infantry with Boromir came on from my right flank right in front of Gothmog's orcs, my archers came on from my edge, and the knights with imrahil came on from my left flank. The highlight of the turn was the archers assassinating the troll shooting him through a building. I had to roll sixes followed by sixes, the second roll was a pair of fives, which I turned into sixes by spending the captain's might points, then I got lucky and rolled another six on the hard to kill table. Boromir declared a heroic charge on Gothmog's unit, and spent a second point of might to win the roll off when Gothmog declared a heroic charge back. combat was painful for both sides, but it looked promising for Gondor.

Turn 2: the other unit of orcs and the troll arrive on my opponent's board edge, the warg riders arrived on my right flank. The Orcsset themselves up to recieve a charge from my knights, the troll charged the infantry in the flank, and the warg riders tried to get across the board to intercept the knights, but remained facing the Minas Tirith warriors to charge them in the charge phase. The troll turned the tide in the combat, and the warriors start to take more casualties, with Boromir using another 2 points of might to fight an epic duel that sliced apart three warg riders, including the hero leading the unit, and to use epic strike after Gothmog used epic strike in the duel. Imrahil used his first point of might to declare an epic charge against the orcs, and removed two and a half companies The archers shot at the unit of orcs grinding against the warriors on my right flank, causing one or two casualties. They did about the same for the remainder of the game.

Turn 3: the wargs got around behind the warriors, and at this point Boromir's formation was reduced to the command company. Boromir and the captain used their last might points to slay a few more orcs before dying, except that the orcs fumbled their attacks and didn't kill anyone. Gothmog jumped into the unit in front of the knights, and his unit held off another epic charge (albeit with more awful casualties)

Turn 4: the second troll finally got to flank charge the knights, and the orc infantry charged them in the front. both of my combat units died, leaving me with two companies of archers vs a troll, Gothmog, and two formations of (now) two companies of orcs

Cool I have a Gondor Army too but it's 750 points. In it is:
    -Boromir,
    -Faramir,
    -Pippin,
-Four companies of warriors of Minas Tirith [with a banner bearer]
-Three companies of knights of Minas Tirith [with a Knight Captain]
-And my White Ent of Gondor as I call him.
Sadly I have not got a chance to play yet.

Looks like it was a fun game Sir Lunchalot, you were up against it, since Epic Heroes (unless they have spells or Epic Rampage) struggle to make an impact when only really facing lots of troops.

I think Mordor had a clear edge on fighting units, since you had so many heroes and upgrades? His list looks very stripped down, the sort of thing I'd be running at that points level. The current tournament list I am considering has only Faramir, though there are two Legendary formations as well.

I think you may be constrained by models but there are a couple of changes you could make cheaply: The Warriors of MT do not need all those upgrades, especcially not when you are also running two Epic Heroes. It might be worth running the units both in threes and giving all those upgrade points to just the Archers, which could then be run as Osgiliath Veterans. So you would have two high def melee units. Though you will still be massively outnumbered by those Morranon Orcs and trolls.

The other thing I would suggest, while you are getting started, is to perhaps scratchbuild an Ent (you can have one per 500 pts), there is an online article for how to do this cheaply using hot glue and plastic sprue and I find the results pretty good, given how quick it is.

Good report. Sounds like it was at least a pretty entertaining game.

Xelee is right about the upgrades, though. Too many and you end up not being able to get enough done. The Mordor list looks pretty similiar to what I'm trying to run with Isengard - alittle bit of everything.

Boromir's "Might Blow" could have been useful for the Trolls. From what I understand he can possibly kill them just by scoring one hit?
