Into the Nightmare #7: Daemons vs Chaos Marines

    Planet: Elysia VII, Segmentum Obscurus.
    Location: Carnax Mountains
    Local Time: 7.16 am

    The gambit had failed.

The taint of chaos chased them still, coming closer with each passing minute. The Inquisitor and his advisors had hoped it would continue to spread in its original direction, expanding along its former path. Instead, the taint had turned back upon itself and followed the Landshark Caravan into the passage through the Carnax Mountains. It hunted them like a bloodhound, like a predator chasing the prey.

Only through the sacrifice of noble heroes were they still alive at all. The deaths of the Space Marines had bought the caravan time, but little else. And as the taint got closer again, so did its effects on the men became more and more pronounced. They had called it ‘the Bloodplague’. It left decay in its wake and those near it were overcome with a berserk bloodlust that defied any sense of self-preservation. Already, two soldiers had been killed by their rabid comrades. Three more had been put down during their rage. Lethal measures had been needed before the berserker madmen had stopped.

Many more were in the infirmary, heavily sedated and under guard. The situation was deteriorating.

Colonel Xanthus, however, was affected differently. At least, he assumed his current state was due to the Bloodplague’s proximity. He felt a strange sense of vagueness, like a disconnection with the world around him. It felt as if he was seeing things through a troubled lens.

He had already talked to several trusted medicae officers, but they declared him physically fit and attributed his condition to extreme stress and lack of sleep. Jared wasn’t convinced. He had considered talking to a psyker, but Librarian Cassius had withdrawn to his private quarters. That left only Inquisitor Veq. Jared felt hesitant about turning to the cold, callous man he knew little about. Telling the Inquisitor of his troubles might well make Veq declare him hereticus and execute him on the spot. Moreover, it would give the Inquisitor unopposed control over his me, and Colonel Xanthus did not trust Veq to treat his soldiers as anything but expendable assets.

Ofcourse, in theory the Inquisitor already had complete authority. But, as long as the men were loyal to Xanthus, there was only so far Veq could go or risk finding himself surrounded by mutinous soldiers. Jared did not want to risk giving the Inquisitor a chance to break that fragile balance.

As he considered these things, alone in the sick bay, a sudden vertigo overcame the Colonel. He gasped out loud as the world spun and then turned to implode upon itself. Everything become black before his eyes. When his vision finally returned, Colonel Jared Xanthus found himself somewhere else, witness to a gruesome spectacle.

    ……..

A great battlefield loomed before him. From a radiation ravaged sky, a pale burning sun shone down. Before him stretched a field of debris and ruined fortifications that spoke of a great war, leaving only post-apocalytic landscape behind.

The fighting was not done. Amidst the wreckage, two great armies fought each other with such savage fury that no human could have hoped to match. All was bedlam and chaos, as two legions of the Dark Gods struggled for supremacy, howling obscene warcries, bleeding their enemies in the names of the Lords of the Warp.

Mighty daemons flew across the battlefield. Chaos-warped tanks and dreadnoughts stalked amongst the bones of the slain. Traitor Marines levelled ten thousand year old bolters and blew daemonic soldiers apart, before they in turn were slain by daemon cavalry the likes of which made the very ground tremble with the thunder of their brass hooves.

Yet, for all its savage glory, the battle itself paled compared to the single, human sized figure that stood on a hill at the other side of the valley the fighting took place in. Colonel Jared’s gaze was drawn to the man, who in turn regarded him. He could see nothing beyond the brown cloak that covered the stranger’s body, or the deep hood that cast his face in shadows. Yet for all this mystery, Jared felt a strong sense of connection to the individual. He knew the stranger’s name as soon as he set eyes upon him.

In the valley below, the cries to the Dark Gods boomed across the battlefield, as the brutal war reached its cresendo.

    …..

In the second battle of the tournament, Chaos fought Chaos as my Daemons faced off against the Traitor Marines. Ironically, like myself, my opponent had brought a mix of Khorne and Nurgle units, though he did have some unmarked squads as well.

The mission was Annihilation, using both kill points and victory points. Deployment type was Spearhead. We fought on a ravaged battle field, the table set to resemble a post-apocalyptic war-torn landscape of wreckage and debris, with several fortifications thrown in. Winning the roll to start, my opponent decided to go first. This allowed him to select one such fortification as his table quarter, and castle up inside it.

    FORCES AND DEPLOYMENT

The Chaos Marine horde was mostly on foot, with but a single rhino to carry plaguemarines across the field. It did have two Dreadnoughts, a Vindicator, and a Daemon Prince to support its troop core. It also had two squads of Havocs, and some Chosen.

    - Daemon Prince of Khorne with Wings
    - Dreadnought with Plasmacannon
    - Dreadnought with Plasmacannon
    - 5 Chosen with 3 Meltaguns and 1 Plasmagun
    - 10 Khorne Berserkers with Powerfist
    - 10 Khorne Berserkers with Powerfist
    - 7 Plaguemarines with Powerfist and 2x Plasmagun
    - Chaos Rhino
    - 5 Havocs with 4x Heavy Bolter
    - 5 Havocs with 2x Lascannon and 2x Missile Launcher
    - Vindicator with Daemonic Possession.

The entire force castled up behind their fortifications. The Havocs, Chosen, Vindicator and Plaguemarine rhino stood in the middle. The Dreadnoughts and Berserkers guarded the flanks. The Daemon Prince waited impatiently in the center of the army, eager to order the attack and shed blood in the name of the Blood God.

My own Daemons, like my opponent’s, consisted of a mix of Khorne and Nurgle soldiers.

    - Obolos, Great Unclean One with Cloud of Flies
    - Essence of Rage, Herald of Khorne on Chariot
    - Essence of Hatred, Herald of Khorne on Chariot
    - 4 Bloodcrushers of Khorne
    - 4 Bloodcrushers of Khorne
    - 4 Bloodcrushers of Khorne
    - 7 Plaguebearers of Nurgle
    - 7 Plaguebearers of Nurgle
    - 7 Plaguebearers of Nurgle
    - 6 Plaguebearers of Nurgle
    - Tsu’lotch, Nurgle Prince with Noxious Touch, Cloud of Flies, Iron Hide and Wings
    - Nu’gluuth, Nurgle Prince with Noxious Touch, Cloud of Flies, Iron Hide
    - Bu’letch, Nurgle Prince with Noxious Touch, Cloud of Flies, Iron Hide

Battleplan: Although the Chaos Marine’s lack of Rhinos might not make it the most competitive of opposing armies, it was not without some serious threats to my daemons. Between the two Berseker units, the Dreadnoughts, and the Daemon Prince, I was looking at five hard hitting counter-assault units able to tackle even the toughest of my daemons. Additionally, the enemy army had plenty of heavy weapons, meltaguns, and plasmaguns to boot. I knew right away this was going to get furious from turn one. My plan was to try and keep the Dreadnoughts busy, while dealing with the Berserkers first and foremost. I would just trust in the natural toughness of my daemon army to soak up whatever fire came from the rest of the enemy, until I was ready to tackle them as well.

TURN 1 Chaos Marines and Daemons

Content to await the arrival of the Daemons, the Chaos marines remained utterly immobile. They dedicated their prayers to the Dark Gods, so that they may enjoy the slaughter to come.

Then the Daemons arrived. With so much havoc and mayhem to look forward to, the Gods of Chaos were only too happy to grant me my chosen wave. Two packs of Bloodcrushers, two packs of Plaguebearers, two Heralds of Khorne and a Winged Daemon Prince of Nurgle all became available. They were ready to take the fight to the enemy.

Both packs of Bloodcrushers appeared directly in front of the Chaos host, one in middle, the other a little more to the right. The Heralds of Khorne led the assault from the left flank, while the Plaguebearers attempted to appear in the middle, behind the deadly juggernauts. One pack deviated and ended up on the right flank, in assault range of a Dreadnought.

    http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/4668/battle003.jpg

Tsu’lotch, last, roared his entry into the material world and stepped onto the field of battle near the rightmost pack of Bloodcrushers.

    TURN 2 Chaos Marines

With the enemy arrived at last, the Chaos Marines praised the Dark Gods and prepared for battle!

On the right flank, the Dreadnought near my Plaguebearer pack went berserk. It prevented him from shooting. Instead, he moved to the nearest enemy unit. The heavy walker slammed right into my putrid daemons and killed one or two with his claws, though my opponent swiftly realised that the Plaguebearers were likely to keep his walker busy for some time!

Behind the Dreadnought, the Berserkers moved around a bunker and ran to get closer to the front line, unable to assault anything yet. Doing so however brought them into assault range of my Bloodcrushers. Truly, the followers of Khorne care not from where the blood flows!

On the left flank, the second Dreadnought moved to assault the second pack of Juggernauts. So did the Daemon Prince, stretching his wings and flying over the battlefield. The Chosen and Havocs pumped fire into the Khornate daemons first, killing one from each group of Juggernauts with heavy weapons or meltaguns.

    http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/2411/battle005.jpg

Then the Prince and the Dreadnought assaulted, killing two more. However, the surviving Juggernaut turned around and scored three wounds on the Prince, cutting deeply into the Khornate leader’s flesh!

There was yet more slaughter to come, as the followers of the Blood God fought each other with unmatched fury. The berserkers on the left flank assaulted the nearest Herald of Khorne and killed him. Though they lost two of their number in the return blows as well.

    http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7494/battle006.jpg

    Killpoints: Chaos Marines 1 – Daemons 0

    TURN 2 Daemons

More Daemonic reserves arrived to join the fight, but not as many as I had hoped. Only the Great Unclean One and the rest of the Plaguebearers were send by the Gods to enter the battle.

The Greater Daemon deep struck first, appearing on the right side near where the Dreadnought was fighting my Plaguebearers. He scattered backwards quite a lot and ran back to try to get to a good position to assault next turn, if he made it.

The Plaguebearers entered the material world as well. One pack appeared on the left flank, more to the rear, on a hill. The second deviated from its original position and ended up right in front of the gunline of enemy havocs.

Despite the lack of reserves, things weren’t looking too bad for my daemons. My Bloodcrushers were in assault range of one group of Berserkers, and a Herald of Khorne was in assault range of the second. I hoped that even if he didn’t win the battle, he’d at least damage them a good deal. Moreover, Obolos on the right flank meant that Tsu’lotch could go hunt the Dreadnought in the middle.

The Daemon Prince of Nurgle flew over to its target and assaulted it, immobilising the walker, but taking two wounds in return from its blows. The Daemon Prince of Khorne roared his fury at the Nurgle Daemon, but was only in base contact with the Bloodcrusher that had harmed it grieviously the previous turn. The Khornate Lord tried to destroy the beast, but put only a single wound on the Crusher. In turn, the Juggernaut sliced his hellblade into the Daemon Prince and finished him off!

While the Plaguebearers scrambled forward, the Herald of Khorne charged into the Berserkers. Again though, it was the Lord of Khorne that fell before the warriors. He killed a single berserker and was slain by the return blows, despite the Berserkers no longer having the advantage of the furious charge.

Fortunately, the Bloodcrushers on the right flank did better. They assaulted the second Berserker unit, and killed all but one or two of the Traitor Marines. They did however lose a second Juggernaut in the retaliation.

    TURN 3 Chaos Marines

Since most of the more dangerous targets were locked in combat, the Havocs and Chosen, as well as the Vindicator, fired on the Plaguebearers. So did the Plaguemarines, who hopped out of their rhino and added to the firepower with their plasmaguns.

Both packs of Daemons in the middle took heavy casualties from the fusillade. One pack was reduced to only two members, the other to three. The Dreadnought nearby, in combat with yet more putrid daemons killed two more of the third pack as well.

    http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6137/battle010.jpg

Free to roam for new targets, the Berserkers on the left flank spotted Tsu’lotch disassembling the enemy dreadnought. They howled their fury and charged fearlessly into the mighty Prince. Khorne favored then, as they lost only a single one of their own to the Nurgle Lord’s noxious touch. In turn, they slew the Prince in a flurry of blows. That left the immobilised dreadnought to smash the last Bloodcrusher from the first pack asunder, ending the melee.

    http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/1061/battle007.jpg

On the right flank however, the two Bloodcrushers slaughtered what remained of the second Berserker squad, and consolidated towards the middle, ready for more carnage!

    Killpoints: Chaos Marines 4 – Daemons 2

    TURN 3 Daemons

Although the last pack of Bloodcrushers continued to make me wait, two more Princes of Nurgle stoody ready to avenge their fallen kin. They both deep struck on the left flank, deviating only slightly and running into assault range of the Chosen and the Havocs, who believed themselves safe behind their fortifications.

    http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7130/battle008.jpg

Worried about giving up too many kill points on packs of daemons that were unable to do much damage, I pulled the three man Plaguebearer pack in the middle back to cover. The other, two daemons strong now, moved forward and assaulted the havocs in the middle. They took no casualties and did none, but tied the enemy up and prevented them from shooting next turn.

The two Bloodcrushers on the right flank did even better. They charged across the field into the remaining Berserkers and killed most, losing no models in turn. They were kept locked in combat as well, safe from fire!

    http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/8017/battle009.jpg

Obolos, however, rolled low on his slow and purposeful move. He failed to charge the Dreadnought, which smashed all but one of the Plaguebearers he was fighting asunder.

    Killpoints: Chaos Marines 4 – Daemons 2

    TURN 4 Chaos Marines

With the fury of battle unabated, the Chosen and Havocs on the left flank frantically turned their guns on the newly arrived Daemon Princes. They concentrated their fire on one and wounded him twice, but failed to kill him. The Vindicator, hoping for an easy kill point, fired at the Plaguebearer pack on the left flank. It scored a direct hit and killed four, as the Nurgle daemons were caught in the open.

The Plaguemarines meanwhile, seeing an opportunity to swing the melee in the middle in their favor, charged into the fight between the Bersekers and the Bloodcrushers. The Juggernauts killed all but the Berserker Champion, but were brought low by the combined powerfists of the Traitor Marines sergeants, scoring my opponent another killpoint

More to the right, the havocs fighting my Plaguebearers again failed to do any damage, taking no casualties of their own either. The Dreadnought slew the last of the Nurgle daemons it was engaged with, just in time to see The Great Unclean One approaching.

    Killpoints: Chaos Marines 6 – Daemons 2

    TURN 4 Daemons

My opponent was well ahead in kill points, but I had almost broken through his screen of counter-assaulters. I was to start swinging the score around again. Additionally, I still had another unit in reserves. The last Bloodcrusher pack became available. It deep struck on the right flank, in assault range of the Plaguemarines.

    http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/2889/battle012.jpg

The damaged Plaguebearer packs both pulled back, deeper into cover. Only the two fighting the havocs stayed, as they were locked in combat. That melee once again ended with no casualties on either side. However, near them, Obolos assaulted the Chaos Dreadnought and swiftly dismantled the enemy walker.

On the left flank, the two Nurgle Princes charged the units in front of them, ignoring the lone berseker still around. Nu’gluuth slammed into the havocs and killed three, taking no wounds in return. Bu’letch did the same to the Chosen, again taking no wounds. Both enemy squads held, keeping my Daemon Princes safe from further shooting.

    http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5864/battle011.jpg

    Killpoints: Chaos Marines 6 – Daemons 3

    TURN 5 Chaos Marines

Faced with the threat of the Bloodcrushers nearby, my opponent turned his remaining firepower on the Juggernauts. The Vindicator fired a shell in their midst, causing two wounds, which were both rendered harmless by the daemons’ invulnerable saves.

    http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/500/battle013.jpg

The Plaguemarines tried next, with bolter and plasmafire. They scored only a single wound, which too was saved by the aura of otherworldliness. Thus, the Juggernauts were kept safe from harm.

Immobilised but not weaponless, the remaining Dreadnought fired at the three Plaguebearers nearby, hoping to score another kill point. However, the daemons went to ground and no casualties were caused.

In the assault phase, things turned against the Traitors. Both Nurgle Princes finished off their opponents, slaughtering the Havocs and the Chosen on the left flank. Nu’gluuth also killed the Berseker Champion. The later tried to assault the Prince, but was swatted like a fly before he could strike.

As an added bonus for my daemons, the two Plaguebearers fighting the second unit of havocs killed one, taking no wounds in return. The Traitor Marines promptly lost their cool and ran right off the table, never to return!

    Killpoints: Chaos Marines 6 – Daemons 7

    TURN 5 and 6: Daemons

The Traitor army was broken. My Daemons needed only to finish it off.

Eager for bloodshed, the last pack of Juggernauts trampled across the field of battle and slammed headfirst into the Plaguemarines. They destroyed the Nurgle marines in an orgy of slaughter. The diseased traitors never even had a chance to strike.

    http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/2253/battle014.jpg

Nu’gluuth and Bu’letch caused havoc on the left flank, assaulting and destroying both the enemy Vindicator and the immobilised Dreadnought. That left only the empty rhino. The transport drove away at full speed, trying to keep the Daemon Princes from catching it, but backed into a corner it could not get out of range. The twin daemons found the retreating Rhino and tore through it like a storm of pestilence.

The battle ended with me well ahead in kill points and victory. However, in order to get a massacre, I needed twice as many kill points as my opponents. I received a solid win instead, scoring 16 command points, and bringing my total to 36, enough to land me a place in the final.

    Killpoints: Chaos Marines 6 – Daemons 11

Result: Solid Victory for the Daemons!

    AFTERMATH

As expected, this turned into a furious but enjoyable game for us both. The followers of Khorne and Nurgle fought it out in a swirling melee. However, in the end, the greater number of Daemons proved to be my opponent’s undoing. Unlike him, I was able to fight a war of attrition, knowing more and more reserves would be arriving every turn.

Still, things looked hairy for a while. When both Heralds failed to stop the Bersekers on the left flank and few reserves showed up, I was in danger of getting overrun. Fortunately, the timely arrival of the Bloodcrushers from the right flank, having dispatched the first Berseker unit, kept a lid on the second Khornate squad. It allowed my Nurgle Princes to slip past the counter-assault screen and finally get to the easy kill points. Like I predicted, once I broke the close combat units, the rest of the enemy army crumbled. That allowed me to close and surpass the kill point gap, just before the end of the game.

Man of the Match this time goes to the Bloodcrushers, again. Although two out of three packs were killed, they proved to be the vital sledgehammer that my army needed to break the enemy resistance. They killed the Khornate Daemon Prince, all but slaughtered both packs of Berserkers, and brought down the Plaguemarines. For that, they more then deserve the award.

Daemons of the Match: Bloodcrushers of Khorne!

    ……

    Planet: Elysia VII, Segmentum Obscurus.
    Location: Unknown
    Local Time: 16.07 pm

    The battle was over.

Colonel Jared Xanthus had witnessed the entire spectacle. Like some perverse bystander to a slaughter that shocked the senses, he had never seen two armies tear into each other with such savagery. Even now, he had to surpress the bile rising in his throat as he surveyed the carnage below.

Only the dead inhabited the valley now. The victorious side, daemons one and all, had vanished, leaving corpses of mangled Traitor Marines in their wake. Beyond the massive graveyard, the other figure still stood, immobile ever since Jared had first seen it, its shadowed gaze upon the Colonel.

Drawn by a motive he could not phantom, Jared found himself stepped forward. He marched down the hill into the slaughterfield. Again he needed to surpress the urge to gag as the stench of spilled blood and the taint of chaos washed over him. He stepped carefully over body parts, pieces of vehicles, spend ammunition, and even the corpses of renegade Astartes. All the while, he tried hard not to focus upon the dead, lest his mind break at the very sight.

Up ahead, the huge form of a majestic and utterly horrifying Daemon Prince lay bleeding out its life. It had been cut open by one of the daemonic cavalry.

Colonel Xanthus found himself drawn to the dying Prince. Step after step took him closer, while a rising sense of panic grew in his heart. He wasn’t afraid of the Prince, but rather of something the Daemon Lord would reveal to him. Something that Jared did not want to know.

Under the watchful eye of the stranger, stock-still upon the hill ahead, Colonel Jared Xanthus reached the Blood Prince and gazed deeply into the immortal’s eyes.

They weren’t immortal at all. They were very much human… and familiar.

    ………

    Jared gasped.

His sense of vertigo made him lose his balance and he fell onto metal floor of the medical bay.

The Colonel looked around. He was back in the Land Shark. What had happened? Had he fell asleep? Or had he experienced a vision of some sort?

He got up and rubbed his head. Jared had never had visions before. He was as ‘blunt’ as they came. And yet, he could not deny that what he had seen had felt as real and true to him as his surroudings now. Above all, the presence of the stranger burned in his memories, as did the expression in the eyes of the Prince.

    The eyes… of an Astartes.

With a sense of urgency Jared shot to the door. Simon Vohl was just walking in to check upon his commander and the two men almost crashed into each other. The XO’s eyes went wide in surprise, but before Simon could speak, the Colonel had grabbed the man’s arms and blurted out his question.

“The Librarian, Cassius, where is he?!”

Vohl was at a loss of words for a few seconds, before finally he regained his composure and replied: “Well, that’s what I came here to tell you. Cassius believes he had located the psychic core of the Bloodplague. It’s heart, to put it metaphorically. Even now, he is preparing a strike force to take him into the taint and destroy it.”

“No…” Jared growled, running for the nearest com-station. In his heart, he knew it was already too late.

“What’s going on?!” Simon blurted, running after the Colonel.

“The eyes!” Jared yelled, frantically. “Cassius can’t go out. I saw it in the eyes. “

    “I saw his doom!”

    ……..

Nice. I love where this is going.

You seriously should think about freelance work for BL.

Black Library has a pretty lame system. The only way you can get to write for them, the ONLY way, is to win their yearly shortstory contest, or at least rank in the top 3.

So he'll have to do that then

EDIT: almost forgot to mention that I also find this report to be great

Now, this was carnage and who doesn't like that?

It seems to me those bloodcrushers are really really dangerous and hard to stop. From all the daemons, these worry me the most. They soak up fire, can take punishment in combat and then they can take a serious punch too... Scary

How many armies were completely painted? I'm curious.
This player had some units painted, some half finished and some not at all... It's a shame.

Congrats on your two victories so far though! Jeeeej daemons!

    Thanks all!

As usual you give me too much credit, but I am very grateful for it all the same

Its on my to-do list, right after winning wimbeldon, flying to the moon and figuring out who framed Roger Rabbit

Well, I agree with you. If you ask me they're the single most dangerous daemon unit in the book. They have their weaknesses, but their strength, toughness and fairly cheap cost more then makes up for it. Also, while they are slow, their large bases actually give them quite an expanded threat radius from where they touch down. People often underestimate that.

Indeed. The tournament was at an independant store, and the store-owner told us they spend a lot of time making scenery. It certainly showed, as they had some real beautiful battle tables, but unfortunately, they didn't seem to spend the same level of detail to their armies.

    Excellent read RRT!

Rather then flee and shoot, the traitor marines met your daemons head on. I always wondered what it would be like in a Bezerker vs. Daemons match. Now I know.

Very exciting plot twist. I look forward to reading more.

A good battle report I enjoyed reading this one! I think a Defiler could of made the outcome different rather than the vindi. What a good game though.

Another read. Great stuff. I rarely use Bloodcrushers in my army, I rather rely on faster units as Fiends and Flamers etc.
