    O&G Project: Warboss Clawz' Waaagh!

Hey gang. I've been posting a WIP plog over on Da Warpath, but I've decided to put it up here as well.

I recently purchased about 3000 points worth of Orcs and Goblins. Most was unpainted (I've soaked and stripped what was painted), but almost all of it was assembled (with mold lines left on) and put on plain black bases.

I was inspired by two things. The song The Night Santa Went Crazy by "Weird Al" Yankovic and another plog on this forum Wood elves, Christmas gobbos, Witch hunters and more

Therefore, I'm making my Waaagh! into a Xmas/winter themed horde. My painting skills are not that high - I generally go with prime -> base coat -> dip -> matte - but my modelling/conversion is to a slightly higher (but still probably not that high in an absolute sense) standard.

I have yet to figure out extreme closeup photography, but once I get to photographing finished units I'll try to get some help. My own pics will do for WIP shots; some of the upcoming ones I've already taken are a bit blurry.

In this first post I'll put up a list of the models I already own and will be doing something with at some point lol. Some of the numbers are a bit vague, as I'm sometimes cutting up R&F models to use as bits.

Edit 25-NOV-2011: I used to have a list here (keeping it inside spoiler tags). I've since realized that keeping a list is futile, since I keep buying more and more stuff. :P Suffice to say that I've got more than I need of pretty much everything in the O&G book except SO infantry, Stone Trolls, and normal Boar Boyz.

Comments are always welcome, especially if you have any ideas for things I could try to do with units I haven't posted pics of yet. I've already gotten a couple of ideas that I'm gonna run with on my Da Warpath plog - that input is probably the main driving point behind setting up a second thread to have to update...

Finally, while the pics to choose from are of course all the same, I'm not just copy-paste reposting one plog into the other. I'm typing them both out from scratch and selecting a slightly different selection of topcs and pictures. The other plog will be updated much more frequently and contain many more pics, wheares this plog will have fewer but larger updates, with a more focused selection of images (and since it is the second time for posting the material, it will probably be a bit better organized and more clear here).

I hope you get a kick out of what I'm doing.

Re: O&G Project: Warboss Clawz' Waaagh!

The first thing I've been working on is Night Goblins. The theme for this unit is Santa outfits (of course). It's a reasonably easy conversion, all I'm doing is putting a fur trim around their faces on the hoods, putting a little pom-pom on the peak of the hood, and flattening out the design from the shields so that I can make a design of my own later.

This is the first time I've ever used actual Green Stuff. I've used other hardware store variety two-part epoxy putties, but they've always had a much shorter workable stage. I didn't realize that GS was so different, and so much easier to work with. I still use the other stuff for big sculpting projects, but I'll be putting a thin coat of GS on the outside to do any actual detailing.

Here are some pics of the initial work on the NGs.

First is a closeup of the hood trim on a fanatic. As you can see, I've removed the model from its base and stuck it on a paperclip. I'm planning to do my bases without any models on them, paint the models separately, and then stick the painted models onto the finished bases. I don't want the DIP to get on my snow...

    ************************************************** ********

Here's the same work done on a R&F NG

    ************************************************** ********

Finally, here is a converted Fanatic I built from a Reaper model (Goblin Ninja), some NG bits, and some bits from the Giant box.

    ************************************************** ********

I've got the hoods lined on all of the NG models I have (and mold lines removed, ugh!). I'm working through the pom-poms and shields now, but got distracted by the shinies (see next post).

Re: O&G Project: Warboss Clawz' Waaagh!

Once I figured out how I was going to go about it, I dropped everything to start working on movement trays for the NGs.

One of the things I did when I was getting ready to put this project together (I bought the bulk of the models in mid-November) ws haunt local craft shops and discount stores (we call them "Dollar Stores" in my part of the world), looking for cheap holiday-themed bits and pieces. One thing I found was miniature battery-powered multicoloured lights. I found some coupons and some sales and multiplied my savings and ended up with 4 strings and a DC power adapter with 4 outputs (lol). My plan right from the start was to "use these on movement trays somehow". The only trick was that "somehow" bit.

Well, I've got my prototype built to a functional level now. It still needs the cosmetics and finishing completed, but it's far enough along that I know it works and have started cutting out the pieces for the next two bases.

    Here are some pics.

First, here is the basic frame for the actual models to fit in. I made the first one in a single piece, but as you'll see later, it made more sense to cut the further trays into two pieces. I used super thick plasticard and balsa wood.

    **************************************************

The trick to the whole thing, the one I thought of that made me drop the models and go straight to it, is to have two layers of base with a gap in between for the cords. Here is the bottom piece, with the battery pack for the lights already attached in place.

    **************************************************

Once I got the battery case set up where I could get at both the batteries and the DC plug, I started putting the lights into the base. I used Mighty Putty (as seen on TV, thank you Billy Mays) to hold the lights in place. Some of the gaps were too wide to cross, so a light here and there has to be tucked away underneath.

    **************************************************

Here is the fully assembled tray, with the lights on!

    **************************************************

I still need to cover the sides with thinner plasticard and then paint/flock the whole thing. My intent is to cover up the lights with blue tack so I can spray paint without wrecking the lights. I tried to figure out a way to do it before putting the lights in, but I really need to have the sides on before I spray.

No, I can do either a cord OR a battery. Best of both worlds really.

Re: O&G Project: Warboss Clawz' Waaagh!

I can happily update here with a finished shot of the first unit. 30 night goblins with full command, netter, and three fanatics (with a unit filler replacing 6 goblins).

I'm not the greatest painter, and I'm an unapologetic DIPper, so take it for what it's worth. If I was English, I'd be "chuffed to bits" about how this worked out. I'm not English, so I guess I'm simply pleased as punch.

    And with the lights out...

I think the snowman is awesome and the wolf 'riders' are interesting as well. Also noticed you are in Calgary too.

Thanks. It took me about an hour to do the cutting and gluing for the one rider model, but it should be a bit quicker for the other 10. And then the greenstuffing can begin!

I play at Myth games (when I do play, which is pretty infrequently). I'm mostly a hobbyist, my actual gaming is mostly D&D.

This is awesome! I've seen lots of christmas orcs and gobbo's but none had the movement trays with actual christmas lights. Your paintjob is really christmas like too, all bright colors and over all the gobbo's have a happy look (when you don't watch their faces).
Keep going on with this, I want to see more!

its so cool that orcs and goblins allow you to make such bright and cartoony stuff...and i think you are really building something cool there

OK, the wolf riders have been interrupted by a painting contest. Anyway, here is the first WIP of my entry.

I love themed armies, and this, sir, is one of the most awesome I've seen. It works so well, Night Goblins in Santa costumes, and you've just done it perfectly. The squigdeer are also genius, and the Wolf-Skiers. Brilliant job.

I also got three characters done.

I'm doing better bases for the characters. I'm using some small pieces of slate that I found by my local library. I've painted the rocks rather than leaving them their original colour, and I'm pleased with how they turned out. Luckily, the rocks are just soft enough that I can drill through them for pins.

Photography note: the pictures were done before I put a coat of matte varnish on the bases. They are now much less shiny.

Assface the Big Boss (so named bacause his face is kind of gross)
