Kenza finally gets some stuff done!

    Hey folks,

thought I might finally get some pics of my painting endeavors posted. Some stuff is a tad older(early 09), some is more recent (like last weekend^^).

    So here we go:

my Priest of Sigmar, painted in early 09 as part of my Mordheim warband. This dude proved himself during my first Mordheim campaign by gaining so many neat skills that all my opponents chose to move around him in every battle.
Painting-wise I tried a lot of new stuff on this, especially the freehand painting on the scroll on his back and to be honest, this was the first time I was painting human skin. I had only been painting greenskins before.
    so, enjoy.

    Cheers,
    Kenza

    And here we go again...

my troll for my more than awesome greenskins.
I started the big blue one 2 weeks before the german GD 09 as part of a bet with my brother, that we could get an entry done in 2 weeks.
First week I only painted a bit on the evenings, but had sort of a hard time with the skin tone and the fading towards the lighter skin.
Then I got swamped with work during the 2nd week, so the night before GD I was faced with a 30% complete mini. Had to pull an allnighter to get it done, screwed up the base I had prepared in the process and had to whip up a new base(skull pass was my saviour) in mere 15 minutes before we had to leave for the big day.
In the end I didn't place since competition was freaking hard as hell and I was dead tired, but what the hell, right? I had fun doing the big blue one and learned lots during the process.
Still, this year I have to start sooner.

Another part of my Mordheim warband - one of the Empire's supercrazies:

painted the little fella pretty fast, but I'm still satisfied with how it turned out.

    So, hope you enjoy it.^^

    And one more...^^

Painted the bugger last weekend as a test mini for my Space Hulk genestealers. Went with the classic color scheme, because it just looks awesome.

Very good stuff, you're a very skilled painter.
    I'm curious if you say

Awesome! You're pretty good with painting skin, not to mention getting the shading in clothes. I always have the hardest time with both...Need..more...practice..

@Gargobot: thanks, appreciate it. My kind of fast is unfortunately very slow.^^The flagellant took me about 8 hours until I got the skin tone I wanted.
I know that for many people this seems incredibly long for just one mini, but I am real slow. Still, I enjoy the time spent painting and even more so if I like the result and I learned a few new tricks.^^Oh, Grüße nach Duisburg übrigens. Wir brauchen neues Wetter. (Sorry for the german, guys)

@Samus: thanks, mate. had a lot of practice with painting skin when I started painting my orc army. It was quite a change, tho, to switch from green to human skin tones. clothes are always sorta tricky, especially the lighter tunic of the flagellant caused me some worries.
It's lot of practice that will do you good. And a neat little help: Mixing Medium. If you go about shading and highlighting clothes (and about everything else) mix a drop or two of mixing medium in your colours. This will make them a tad more translucent and will help with fading out the colours.

    Cheers,
    Kenza

Great work all round, the gradients and the blending of the colours are excellent on every model.

I think 8 hours are understandable, some character models take me that long. But for my taste that would be too long for a rank and file mini. But nevertheless the invested time shows, it's a really great paintjob.

Re: Kenza finally get's some stuff done!

yeah, well, you see...this guy is no character model. it's not a rank and file either, because mordheim is a skirmish rather than army game.
most people at my lgs think i have lost my mind for taking that much time to paint my minis, but i like it. i'm sort of a perfectionist, so i can't have my minis just basecoated and drybrushed. (nothing really wrong with that tho, just not what i like to do)
the whole time thingy can be tricky for commission work, too, that's why i'd never try to calculate a price based solely on the time i took painting it...

I was very surprised that this was your first go at human skin, it's excellent!
Your skin tones are full of character!

Look forward to seeing what's up next!

Re: Kenza finally get's some stuff done!

@lowkey: the terminator is still WiP, but I will get some WiP Project shots up this weekend, I think. How you doin', btw?

@boymilla: looked through your log, i kinda like it. your style looks very old school 2nd ed to me. and i don't mean that in a bad way, it works very well, especially for the blood bowl teams. i also like that you have the guts to go with the harder colors to paint (yellow is a real piece of work). i'm very curious to see how your iyanden turn out.
also, i was really happy how my first try at human skin turned out as well.^^ that's why i thought i might take it up a notch with the flagellant.

as lowkey can confirm, i've been painting various skintones over the last few years, the majority being green. and even tho green and a more human tone handle quite differently palette-wise, the difficulty is more in where and how to shade the skin as well as where to highlight. once you get the hang of that, all your skintones, no matter what color will improve.

to everyone with at least some basic knowledge of mini painting i can only recommend jeremy bonament(sp?)'s painting dvd (from kraken, i think). although he's from the french school of mini painting, his tips and ideas are a treasure trove of information. while you can find most of that advice on the net, it's always better to SEE it done. some real eye-openers there.

    cheers,
    kenza

Re: Kenza finally get's some stuff done!

as I mentioned before, this weekend I'll add some WiP's of current projects.
    So here we go.

This is my currently first SH Blood Angels Terminator, Brother Noctis, if I'm not mistaken.
I've been following Anja Wettergren's step-by-step as a guideline on how to build the reds to get the right tone. Might need an additional highlight and a final red glaze, but I'm not entirely sure.

    Cheers,
    Kenza

Re: Kenza finally get's some stuff done!

    got one more for y'all.

Red is nice and all, but my true love are the blue guys everyone seems to loathe, Ultramarines. So here's a Black Reach Marine as WiP, might need another Highlight, 'cause he looks to flat in normal light.
I started on my Ultras years ago, back when GW still had forums. Back then, Spikyjames was nice enough to tell me how he did his first Ultras. I loved the darker blue shade he had chosen.

Unfortunately, I never was able to finish painting the army, always got sidetracked with different armies, games and whatnot. But I'm very determined to finally give 'em the treatment they deserve.
Oh, btw, keep in mind that the Ultramarine is not intended as a display mini or somesuch nonsense. I paint to play, so the blendings might not be as smooth as on the troll or the Terminator (although those are gaming minis in my armies as well^^).

    Courage and Honor!
    Cheers,
    Kenza

Re: Kenza finally get's some stuff done!

    More WiP, different game again.
A friend handed me this Moria goblin and asked me to see what I can do with it. He gave it to me already primed. Because of that I didn't see the nasty flashline going through it's face.
Gotta say, those LotR Minis are damn tiny, this gobbo is half the size a 40k Orc. On top of that it lacks lots of details, meaning the sculpting is rather shoddy. The toes on one foot weren't sculpted, half it's face was pretty flat and it was hard to make out where armor ended and clothes started. Also, because of that flash thingy in it's face, which I only saw when I had already started painting it, I chose to use it for at least something. So now it is a bloody gash across it's face. It sort of worked as intended.^^
Anyways, I painted it in about 2.5 hours trying to make the best of it. Base will get done tonight, will post the finished pics then.
    Enjoy.

    Cheers,
    Kenza

Nice Space Marines, that Terminator will look awesome when he's finished.
And the Moria Goblin still looks very nice, the model is probably not of such a high quality because it's from the starter box, from what I've seen the LotR range isn't so bad normally.

That's lovely, the best Moria Goblin flesh tones I've ever seen.

How nostalgic, reminds me of being younger.

The Ultramarine looks to be a great start to the army - excellent blue there.
