The Notorious 501st God Sons; An IG Project Log Now With Fluff

    -Now With Fluff!

This is my first project log on Warseer, and its Imperial Guard! Its a custom regiment known as The Notorious 501st (back story will come later), but in short they are a penal regiment. All of their vehicles are old and rusted out (as you will see in the pictures to come) and this is because if they find a tank on the field of battle they will try to recover it for their own use (looks like they've been taking advice from the orks lol).

Anyways i'm sure you're all tired of my rambling on so here are the pics

More pictures will come soon. Q & C welcome of course

I like the idea, and the painting is nice too, perhaps a wash of develan mud would define the mini more?

Thats not a bad idea. I just need to get a hold of some washes. Ive been meaning to for a while but it always slips my mind when i'm at the hobby shop.

Agreed, looks more realistic that the sentinals IMO.

I say this because when I first saw them, I thought the orange may have been camo, but upon further reading, I saw that it's actually rust.
Although your technique seems to have improved, I suggest making the rust a tad more subtle, ie in smaller patches and less wise spread, sometimes less is more

Other than this, looking very good so far, can I ask how you painted the barrel on the bassie? The metal looks very realistic.

    Thanks

IcecreanBoy; thanks for the tips. and the barrel was pretty simple actually. Base coat black followed by multiple, very, very light drybrush coats of codex grey. and to give it the slight metal look without making it shiny i just use a light watered down coat of brazen brass. lastly use a black ink wash.

    Fluff Part 1
The 501st God Sons, more commonly known as the “notorious 501st”, are the worst scum in the Imperium of man, excluding of course the heretics. When a guardsmen commits a crime, be it murder, rape, looting, or going AWOL, they are usually put to the firing squad; no judge, no jury, only an executioner. There are some soldiers, however, that, despite their war crimes, are too valuable to be thrown out. Penal squads are not an uncommon thing in the Imperial Guard; men set out on suicide missions in an attempt to regain the good grace of the God Emperor, and those who survive long enough to finish their missions may even be re inducted into the Guard.
Those few who are skilled, or in most cases lucky, enough to be given a pardon are sent to the God Sons Penal Regiment. These men are given new names, their old names and records too tainted with crime to be the those of an active soldier; they are reborn, not as Battle Brothers like the noble Astartes, but as children of the Emperor, God Sons.
Each member of the 501st are from different regiments, platoons and home worlds. Some men have lost their home to the Heretics, others still fight with hope of going home someday, but most men fight because it is the only option they have anymore; another war crime wouldn't put them in a new penal squad, it would send them strait to their death. This common “last chance” that the men and women of the God Sons share is what binds them together as a Regiment.

nice, rusty armour! i'd also say go for some washes. a thinned down 50:50 mix of devlan mud and badab black over the armour, sepia on the rust and a little leviathan purple on the worky bitz would be my suggestion. that generally "ages" the mini and makes the colour transitions softer. keep it up!

Looking good so far Khaos, I like the idea of 'recovering' the rusty, battlescarred tanks and using them.

I'm interested in seeing some of the Penal Infantry that will be part of this force, should be great! Keep it up dude!

loving the idea that you have produced.
not too bad paint job either although i will give you my two cents
even though they are salvaging parts/ vehicles there would always be a level of maintenance on the vehicle i.e on the sentinels rust would not be on the hydrolic systems as that could cause failure of the component, and if it was found that way that would have been cleaned up to get it back on the field. saying that the cannon of the earth shaker also would have had some maintenance done to it also so that the chance of failure is reduced. i would recommend painting those sections boltgun metal, then washing with badab black, then after dry devion mud. this way it looks the rust was sanded back then lubricated. this is assuming that the recoil mecanism is telescopic.

the best way of thinking about it would be thinking of what you would maintain or repair if you recovered a vehicle... the two i can think of is moving functions and weapon systems.

but keep the good work your rust effect is getting better with each vehicle

the other day my sister showed me a ink which when heated with hot air it bevels/embosses. it would be a nice touch to the rust effect that you are going for. especially since when steel/iron is heavily rusted it actually gains mass. the only thing im not sure of, if it has adverse affects on plastic
