Army of the toughless - A High Elf blog

Dear fellow wargame painters, after being finished with my WoC army I decided to get back to my first real WH army, the High Elves.
Due to some great massacres I got with them and the temptation of the dark gods they were left behind for a long time in the depths of my armycase but now I'm going to finish them.
This blog will contain partly repainted models which I'm not going to show all and some new units and models with which I'm going to bolster my army of toughnessless and proud warriors.
Comments and criticism are very appreciated.

Here's a pic of my latest wizard on horse which has the colors all my lords, heroes and dragon princes will get.

Here's a WIP of a second mage I made out of some bits and will get the same colors.

This is going to be my great eagle, base still needs to be done but it was drying at the time I took the pic. I'll have to give it a dullcoat too.

This is a WIP of how my dragon princes are going to be. I got silver helms but since I never used them as such and normal prince are too expensive I decided to convert them to let them look like dragon princes.

I'll go back to the basing, feel free to take a good look and don't forget to comment

    I got some updates!
The mage is painted and he turned out quite well and can pair up now with my archmage on horse.
I also did the base of my great eagle which you can see below. I chose for a sort of desert theme. I still need to figure out how I can do it best on my spearmen and dragonprinces so if you guys have any advice, it's more than welcome!
    Here's the painted mage:

    And my based eagle:

Tomorrow I'm going to start on my dragon princes which I won't update all because they all look sort of the same anyways

hoi there, that looks already great for starters!!
and like breaz said it, your rocks look soo damn real.. seems like you just picked some up outside in the garden and stuck them to your base somehow.. Oo
besides, i do like the colour scheme for the lords and heroes, and even though it is not totally new both the models shown are nice to look at.
last but not least gotta love that eagle.. you really got an eye for how to paint realistic..
so keep up the good work and let us see more of those dragon princes soon!

Nice to see another High Elf log!
I like the colour scheme, it's rather original and it will be interesting to see how it turns out when you've got a bigger force. The painting on the great eagle is really nice.

i agree with mike.... do you have any plans on the core units actually?

Re: Army of the toughless - A High Elf blog

Yes I have. I don't have a sample yet but they'll get a different color than the dragon princes and characters.
I have divided my colors into 3 schemes:
    -Core.
    -Specials.
    -Characters.

Core units will get mostly bleached bone with hawk turquoise. Special units will get a darker green and more gold on their armors like the WIP dragon prince in my first post. There you'll also see the colors my core units will get.
Since dragon princes are such arrogant beings that they don't even bow to the phoenix king I decided to paint them in the character colors as well.

    Okay, updates!
I finished two of my converted dragon princes and the result's not bad. This time I put real stones on the base but still had to paint them because they didn't look enough like rocks

Hope you like it and C&C is always welcome, especially on the bases, I think they can use some improvement.

Next thing will be the banner with some forced freehand (wish me luck), hope that will turn out good as well.

Wow Aart, I was expecting to see something cool, but what you did there is even better than that!! Love how much work you put into your guys and you can be assured: One can see that!!
Just like you said already: The bases could use something more on them in my opinion. At least I find it hard to imagine a ground on which there are randomly some stone blocks laying around. Maybe you can fill that 'gap' between sand (?) and rocks with some mid-sized gravel.
And Every time I'm lookin at your musician I fear that his horse might trip over that huge stone in front of him Hope he won't anyways, else his horn-solo might be interrupted all of a sudden.. ^^

So altogether: Good going and great work with that color scheme, keep it up and show some more soon!

Well, desert isn't that inspiring. Most pics I get of it are just sand dunes and sand dunes. With rocks it's just sand with a rock somewhere. Maybe I can try to put on some dried grass or something or a dead branch.
And I placed the rock there because I imagined he would jump over it, not rather fall =P But that also can happen, that's why I'm gonna paint the Ellyrion banner so they can ignore that piece of rock XD

I like your dragon princes and I think that your idea about some dead grass or some branches might be a good idea for your bases.

Re: Army of the toughless - A High Elf blog

I finished the Dragon Princes! Compared to how they looked this is a great improvement for them (see the first post).
    Here are the last ones:

    Here's the whole bunch:

And a shot of the banner:

I also did a small update on the bases. I added some small stones and a bit of dry grass here and there but that's not visible on the pics sadly.
    Hope you guys like it!

I'm now busy with updating my lion chariot which shouldn't take too much time, so probably I'll post it tomorrow. Next is my other unit Dragon Princes which will be the original ones. I could buy them with a good discount and they are nice models. After that another chariot cause my army will consist mainly of chariots and then all the infantry.
