Looks totally epic ! Thanks for the pictures![]()
That is bloody epic Jind! Reminds me of my gaming group's highschool days of putting 3 tables together and have 6 guys throw down everything they own. Somehow you managed to get it done in 4 hours though, it took us all weekend.
I hope you recover in time for WCP. Our lists are rated the same, so there's a good chance my Warriors may get to take a whack at fighting the Last Legion.

Jind has accepted your challenge I just texted him
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191 using Tapatalk 2
I BARELY got him the last time, and that was by hopping OFF the field of battle with Big Jobz!
Let's see what the sneaky gitz can do his warriors THIS time!!!
Looking forward to it Ryan!!! Beers on me!
Da Birthday Bash Mash Up!!!
So I'm taking a quick break from adding some details to a unit of 50 Night Goblins (Da Lucky Gitz, so called as they rolled over FOURTEEN CONSECUTIVE ONES FOR NETTING!!) and I realized apart from posting pictures of my birthday I didn't really WRITE anything about it!
See - it's old age, already affecting my grey matter!!!
The Concept...
Running a large mega-battle is a tough show - especially as this had FORTY FIVE THOUSAND POINTS ON THE TABLE!!!
Issues you run into are:
1) Time - it takes an incredibly long time to run turns
2) Boredom - as you're waiting for the turn to turn (so to speak!) players not doing anything get bored
3) Disengagement - if you're not going to be able to affect the outcome of the game you get bored
4) Noise - it gets noisy with that many players!
5) Rules issues - with so many armies on the board you'll be running into issues!
Having been an ex-GW employee for all of THREE MONTHS I had to run my fair share of big battles and as a result I knew what I was walking into. In order to make sure everyone (or at least as many people as possible) had fun I came up with a concept and then stream lined the game rules to make it happen!
Scenario - take the Castle!!!
Keep it simple - set a visible goal and make it easy to see whose wining at any given moment. In this case we had a 6 foot by 8 foot table - and on one of the 2 by 2 foot sections we had a GW Castle. Each wall and tower counts as an objective - so eight in total.
I also got 2 towers and 2 houses, with some wall sections, and made a village on the other side of the table - each building also counts as an objective.
In another 'dead' part of the board I placed another tower - which is also an objective.
WHOEVER OWNS THE MOST OBJECTIVES AT THE END OF THE GAME WINS!!!
This is HUGE as the game is very visual - we're battling to wrest control pf the Castle and it's surrounding village - the game has immediate focus and players know what they need to do. Now we just have to make it interesting...
Whose my friend??
I got a lot of players with their armies - but I'm OLD SKOOL - I dislike (hate actually!) seeing a mish mash of armies fighting together - after all why are Lizardmen fighting side by side with Daemons? Makes NO SENSE! Well it had to make sense for my Birthday Party so I needed to make this work in-game.
What I did was have a normal 2 player turn sequence - I got first, then the allies - as per a normal game of warhammer.
The allies followed the normal rules for an alliance - so we rolled a die to see if the alliance would deteriorate each turn - and followed the rules for that.
What I also did was checker-board deploy the alliance, good-evil-good-evil-good-evil-good, with a good army in the village (in this case High Elves) and an evil army in the castle (GOBLIN TRAITORS!!!)
The Twist
The twist was that at the end of the game if ORCS AND GOBLINS controlled the most they won! But if the Forces of Order controlled the most they won, and if the forces of Evil controlled the most THEY WON!
But since the alliance is...well an alliance...how do we make this happen? Easy! If a force of order (for e.g.) sees a force of destruction INSIDE AN OBJECTIVE then they can declare a charge on them! BUT THE MINUTE THEY DO THIS THE ALLIANCE ENDS AND STARTING THE NEXT TURN WE PLAY BATTLE ROYALE - A 3 PLAYER BASED TURN!!!
And whoever breaks the alliance goes LAST in the turn sequence - such is the price of treachery!
So now this provided an interesting under-current to the game as you never knew when they would set aside their vows and go for each other! And with checkerboard deployment you can bet it was going to turn ugly!
My army was deployed all around the castle and village - all my units facing the structures - as I'm besieging them - and for the most part the alliance was normally less than NINE inches from the rear of one of my units! But the good news is I had so many units with scary stuff (like the 6 giants, 2 Wyverns, Cockatrice, Griffon, Chimera, Lammasu) most players were concerned about my presence.
To keep the game flowing I also had STRICT rulings on how the armies were selected:
1) ONLY Level 1's allowed for your army, and they only know their signature spells.
2) NO Magic items allowed in the army, including Chaos gifts, Dwarf Runes, etc, APART FROM THE BSB - who can have a magic banner of any points limit.
3) The Forces of Destruction and Order picked an over-general - that army ONLY was allowed a level 4 - and they could also purchase a single magic item up to 50pts in value for their Lords.
Why?
This was to speed up the gameplay, to prevent stupid situations come up like 16 crowns of command, and set the tone that this was a game in which you had fun - and epic - moments - it wasn't a game for the serious minded.
I was also relaxed on the army composition - if you wanted to spend more on rare so be it - one guy brought in four Daemon princes, one of each Chaos God, as his 2000 point army.
I also limited the main players - 2000 points only - and after I had 14 players with 2k each, and me with my 15k, other players could only bring up to 500 points of army - again not to worry about core/special/rare allowances.
This was to ensure that everyone who wanted to got a chance to play BUT the table wasn't drowned in models. As it was we did get flooded but not quite drowned!!!
HELP!!!
I also enlisted two F/T helpers and 2 P/T helpers to move models, roll dice, and make decisions across the board. I basically walked around all day and swooped in to any action that looked exciting and would roll dice for that. For e.g. when the Last Legion got charged by 18 Iron Guts with about 3 characters - along with an Iron Blaster and a single Mournfang! If the help was over whelmed I basically got an Alliance player to roll the die for me - so for e.g. destruction charged me - I got Order to roll the dice for me if I couldn't see the combat!
When a unit fled (for Orcs & Goblins) I simply removed them from the table.
I also made a bunch of counters - round bases with the Battle for Skull Pass Gobbo decorations - so I knew who was squabbling.
Armed with the basics of how to make the game work I now needed to work out how to combat the greatest opponent of ANY mega-battle...
BOREDOM!!!
To this end I added in some random events. For e.g. there were 4 forests on the table - the moment anyone entered them they were automatically charged by 10 Spider Riders, full command!! One of the Forests held my beloved Aranarok Spider! She charged the four Daemon Princes who walked into the forest! They didn't take long to smash her to bloody ruin but you should have seen the players faces when this was all going on!!
Later on, halfway through the game, I saw areas of the battlefield that could lead to players getting disengaged from the main action - or had become embroiled in bitter battles - just to remind them that there was a Greenskin invasion going on I summoned my relief force - ALL my mounted units came on from all 4 edges - in places were they would cause the most mayhem! For the most part I placed units of 10 Spider Riders, command, at random - one area saw Big Jobz and his massive swarm of Squig Hoppers - Grom the Paunch *well his model anyway* came on with the 5 Wolf Chariots!
And best of all was the 33 Boar Boyz Big Unz led by no less than FOUR WARBOSSES AND A BSB BIG BOSS!!!
Again, the idea was to make sure that these units didn't influence the main game - i.e. prevent people assaulting buildings - but rather to run around and keep people engaged! This led to several large and very messy three way combats - with units running all over the place!!
In this respects I was more of a organizer than a player - but I had immense fun - and it felt awesome hosting my entire collection for the game!!! Makes me want to do it again - only vs someone with an equally large army, in a massive room, and play it out over the course of a day or two!
So how did the game go...
To start with VERY badly!! My army bounced off the walls in all directions, animosity ground my entire right flank to a halt - which was responsible for assaulting the High Elves sequestered in their fortified village, and not to much of a dent was made in the alliance! The Manglers also did me proud seeing as I was so close to everyone! Their 1st turn was awesome as I was able to release a veritable swarm of fanatics! But combat saw a vast chunk of my army - perhaps 25% die as they were rear charged by anyone and everyone!! The battle for the castle saw a slew of enemy Greenskins die - but they were filled with green skin resolve and kept me at bay!!!
The grand alliance didn't last too long - turn 2 evil Ogres turned on their High Elf comrades in the village and all of a sudden hell broke lose! I could only watch in amazement as the alliance turned on each other - almost to point they ignored the pitiful cries for help coming from the Castle!
I actually gained a wall section - and sent the rest of my army into the fray!
As the next turn progressed perhaps half my army was dead or dying! But the forces of Order and Destruction still had the numbers over me - only they were going for each other! On the left flank a spirited attack was made by good ogres, evil beastmen, and good Dwarves who all signed a non-aggression pact with each other.
But come their shooting phase they back stabbed each other - so I sent in the reinforcements - a massive MASSIVE unit of Boar Boyz - to wreak havoc! They desperately tried to stop the pigs - by throwing out 2 chariots to block me from charging the Gors and Dwarfs - but 8 Spear Chukkas, 2 doom Divers, and 2 lobbas put an end to THAT hope - so my crazy pigs charged!!! In turn they got flanked by a Dwarf Iron breaker unit with a Thane and BSB!
MASSIVE CARNAGE ensued as all 3 sides wracked up the combat damage - all my lords made way to the Dwarves - to help keep as many of my lads alive as possible - and the end of the combat round saw both forces needing insane courage to hold the line! But sadly Iron Breakers are stubborn - so they easily held themselves in check while the remains of the horde ran for home!!!
[SIZE=7]The fall of Big Jobz[.../SIZE]
Poor Big Jobz - he appeared on the OTHER flank with his horde of Hoppers - and rear charged a unit of Lead Belchers - who were frontal charged by Tree Kin AND Knights of the Realm!!
MASSIVE kill counts for me and the good guys - poor Ogres! But because Order did more wounds, had ranks, etc, it meant a small insane courage to hold - which failed - so they fled! I did run fast enough enough though - but they got smashed by Iron guts JUST AFTER RALLYING from their flee!
The end is nigh...
Very soon the castle was deserted as I was able to wipe out the defending treasonous Greenskins - and I held six of the eight castle sections. The village withstood attack after attack - High Elves proving why they can be a deadly force! The castle was assaulted by various units - Daemon Princes, monsters, etc, but we held firm!
GREENSKIN VICTORY!!!!

Oh boy - Day one at the tournament....
Game One - vs Empire - long story short he killed 280 points of units - I killed 1500 points plus got the secondary objective.
Lunch break - started drinking
Game two - vs Daemons - I'm wanting to charge the Daemons with my big spider, but were is it? IT DIED THE PREVIOUS TURN BUT I'M TOO DRUNK TOO NOTICE!!
Game three - vs Ogres - I barely made it to the end of the game - losing my entire army in the process!!!
Day Two - is today - woke up with a massive hangover - how will I ever recover my tournament standings!!!!
Amazing pictures of a happy chappy. Congratulations and may there be many more Waaaaaghs.
Thanks Little Joe!
The tournament was rough going - after winning my 1st game, along with the secondary mission, but then losing the next two thanks to the Green Drink....I was pretty much at the bottom of the pack of around 46 players.
But then the next day I was sober, if not a little hungover, but I won both my games - along with the secondary objectives - and was able to climb to 16th - respectable if not my usual top 5 ranking - so I've learned a valuble lesson! BEERHAMMER IS BAD FOR YOUR TOURNAMENT RANKINGS!!!
I had a blast though and I did win one of the raffle prizes - and was able to pick up the Grimlok and Gazbag minature - some special character that was given out with some computer game - he looks freakishly good!!!
So alls well that ends well I guess!
