I think trolls may be quite key in an orc list simply to provide extra CR to the rest of the boys. A unit of 6 for 360pts would be pretty mean.. 18 s5 attacks PLUS stomp attacks (is that d3 hits each? or 1? I cant remember... plus, do both ranks get to stomp?)
It's one attack, and only in base contact sadly. Regarding the cost, well, granted, as much as I'd like to field a 6*2 unit of trolls, they're too expensive for that indeed. Nah, 2x2 will do, the point cost is still manageable, I'll lose nothing besides that one rank bonus and a couple ASL hits, and it's going to be super fast and mobile

Note that stupidity has changed a tiny bit for trolls, btw, if you fail your test, you move 1D6 forward, and not half speed.

Well lets see - Orcs & Goblins minus goblins - ie orcs! I did have a phase when I ran just 100% orc boyz army for QUITE a long time - just before I got my hands on Big Jobz. It's ok in 7th but wasn't amazing. The problem is pure gobbos is doable, but pure orcs is tougher to pull off then their natural toughness.

Yeah we get great, cheap, units of boyz, solid characters, big waaagh magic which is very supportive, but without the following it becomes tough:

    1) Warmachines - unless they add orc bullies to satisfy the orc theme an army list without warmachines is always at a disadvantage.

    2) Fast cav - you'll miss those boys big time, trust me

    3) Throw away gobbos - lets face, gobbos are solid in the game - fanatics, netters, cheap units, AND you can put them in between orc units to stop panic from spreading - they are fantastic with orcs in a mixed force.

So what can we do to play all orcs? Well:

    1) Take lots of units of small 10 strong orc boyz with additional choppas to act as our throw away units

    2) Snotlings - technically they aint gobbos and might make the list of things accepted by your mate

    3) Trolls, giants, pump wagons, boar chariots, boar boyz - make use of them at all costs!

It'll give people a run for their money but for pure slaughter take an actual mixed force

ACTUALLY I am considering going back to a mixed force for a bit just so my orc boyz can taste a bit of 8th before I put them away again!

With the new steadfast rules, and the new shooting in 2 ranks rules how does this sound as a unit (though't i'd ask fellow greenskin players first):

    60 arrer boyz + command 390 points

They can hold thier own in combat, and aren't too bad in shotting phase. Possibly chuck a character in there to bolster thier hitting power, what do you think?

With volley fire, they'd have 40 shots at full strength. As you said, they wouldn't be bad in CC either.

Re: Dreams of greatness - A Greenskins rise to glory!

I got tons of old plastic arrer boyz - not the best looking models but they do the job!

Love the fact that TWO gobbos on the poll are pulling in as many votes as FOUR Orcs but I'm scared, I voted for Grom as he's my all time favorite Warhammer character, not just as a greenskin, but it's so close right now!

So for those of you who are neutral just vote for Grom anyway! Remember, one greenskin - one vote! Your Waaagh needs you!

No! Vote for Gorbad! He's losing terribly, it's injustice. Though Grom is cool (perhaps cooler) even Azhag is beating Gorbad, this isn't right!

Re: Dreams of greatness - A Greenskins rise to glory!

    Hi all,

Further to my list posted earlier, and inspired by advice, I have had a think and decided to add an extra unit of 40 NG arrerz (and further inspired to do so by the new volley fire rules :-) ). It wasn't too hard to find the points for this unit, I simply dropped a chariot, a spearchukka and some magic items. I have one question... are nets still useful on this unit? Or would a single fanatic be better? Again, this list is an attempt at balance although I am conscious that it is slow. Yet, with the faster infantry through random charges, this may not be such an issue. Yet, would hoppers/wolves be a good option to try and take out enemy warmachines?

Re: Dreams of greatness - A Greenskins rise to glory!

i'd say netters instead of a single fanatic for sure.

fanatics are so flaky, they never do just what you want, and their potential in 8th is probably diminished by increased unit sizes. the point of fanatics is to make the enemy panic and run away instead of finishing the charge on your gobbos, and any extra damage they do is gravy.

the days of the single fanatic are over! even 2d6 s5's isn't going to make a huge unit turn around. on the other hand, 3 fanatics launched from the unit behind the unit charged, with a magic mushroom shaman in there to reroll release hits, could still hit the spot nicely. 3d6 with rerolls for your own horde to suffer, 3d6 release hits with rerolls for the enemy, and up to 3d6 more death throes hits. or 2 units of gobbos behind a huge unit, each of them with 3 fanatics... 6d6 for your horde, up to 12d6 for the enemy horde... of course 6d6, even with rerolls, can make your own horde run away...

Re: Dreams of greatness - A Greenskins rise to glory!

Netters get better now. For the same 35 points, they'll work on two ranks of attacks instead of one. Ain't that neat? As for fanatics... IMHO, they've become even worse, a huge liability in fact. I'm not goint to talk about larger units, rtunian already did, and imho it's situationnal. I'm not convinced everybody is going to field bigger units. Troops aren't going to get cheaper, and not everybody is going to play larger games.
Nah, I'm talking about scouts and light cavalry. Scouts can now deploy in LoS of the enemy, and close enough too. Light cavalry have that vanguard rule that gives them a free move before the battle starts. Well... if I say that you get unlucky and don't get the first turn, or you get the first turn but your gobs squabble, or you fubble around and don't move forward much... I don't really need to expand on the idea, I think you get the picture, right?

Re: Dreams of greatness - A Greenskins rise to glory!

I voted for grom, do to his eternal indigestion, but I would have rather voted for Wurzag given the option.

I am pretty excited to play in my first tournament in over a year this weekend! I will be at It Came From Out of the Basement '10 in Edmonton, rocking my savages one last time in 7th ed.

Over the past few years I have been using a lv 4 shaman and calling him Wurzag(using the model) as my general. The back story was that he was fed up with all of the useless Orc Warbosses and had abandoned his quest to find the leader of the next Waaagh. Unfortunately, I did not win very many of my games with this army, likely due to Gork and Mork's wrath for Wurzag abandoning his quest.

Now Wurzag believes he has found the leader on the next Great WAAAGH and the tournament will be part of his trials that Gork and Mork have set up for him.

    The list is as such:

Savage orc warboss(125) martoggs best basha(25) ed kickin boots(30) morks spirit totem(35) -215

savage orc big boss(75) bsb(25) noggs banner of butchery(25) -125

    savage orc shaman(70) lv 2 (35) boar(16) skull wand of kaloth(40) waaagh paint(10) -171

    savage orc shaman(70) lv 2 (35) staff of sorcery(30) sword of battle(15)*whichever one is +1 A* -150

    24 savage orcs(192) command(30) spears(24) big uns(96) -342

    24 savage orcs(192) command(30) shields(24) -246

    10 savage orcs(80) 2hw(20) mus(5) -105

    10 savage orcs(80) 2hw(20) mus(5) -105

    10 savage orcs(80) bows(20) mus(5) -105

    7 savage orc boar boys(147) spears(14) shields(14) command(38) -213

    6 savage orc boar boys(126) spears(12) shields(12) command(38) big uns(48) warbanner(25) -261

    Giant -205

    total

So far, slight variations of this list have had about a 75% win record at my club, here is hoping that they can continue it on tomorrow!

I should hopefully have some results for you after this weekend!
