Hive Hades - Steel Legion Log

Okay finally I am getting my project started. My aim: revive my beloved Steel Legion.

I once got distracted by Cadians but didn't like painting them (there is an unfinished log here somewhere). So I have chosen Hives Hades as the place where my regiment is going to fight (don't know a good number yet) because it is pretty much hell on earth. In this Hive and around it you will pretty much find everything worthy of being described as the horrors of war.

Okay enough of that. Besides the regimental number I don't know yet I am not sure where I want my regiment to fight.
I have thought about the trenches around the city, within the city, hydroponic gardens which might have survived in some level of the hive and so on.

At the moment I am aiming for six test miniatures and then pretty much let voting and advice from friends decide which one to take.

2 I have finished so far:

The dude one the left represents a legionary fighting in the trenches around Hades during the season of fire (I guess Orks don't care if there is lava around), inspired by Firefly browncoats. The fence at the base isn't painted yet as I want to wait till I have all miniatures painted before I start experimenting with pigments.
The legionary to the right is more a Flecktarn-Cityfight camouflage theme. He will get some rust effects using pigments on his helmet some time. He is inspired by the US Marines camouflage which I will try on another miniature.

This is the one I am currently working on. I am not quite happy with his camouflage and will rework it completely drawing longer stripes on his coat.

So any suggestions, comments, criticism and spelling corrections are welcome.

I like the urban camouflaged legionary, the best. The others are very good as well, though.

As for number, maybe the 77th Steel Legion?

I'm with Magos Errant on the urban camo, it's the most striking and looks like something the garrison defending hades would be wearing. The other troops are good too, though.

I have to agree with the other guys, the urban camo looks the best - how did you do it?

Nice work, for myself, i quite like the concept of red coats, but perhaps if you did a camo for that like the city camo then that would really make the color scheme stand out.

I'm with the others on this, the urban camo looks the best. And as punkfish i would also like to know which colours you used.
I would only suggest to paint the blanket roll uni coloured, to keep the attention on the great urban camo.

The City Camo looks best, IMHO. And Vimes is right about the blanket roll.

Re: Hive Hades - Steel Legion Log

Thanks for the kind replies. I hope to finish the redone third trooper tomorrow and then get asap on the last three guys, trying on one the camouflage T_55 suggests.

    On the urban camo:
Colours used: Adeptus Battlegrey (AB), Codex Grey (CG), Fortress grey (FG), Chaos Black (CB), Scorched Brown (SB) and Badab Black (BB)

I started with heavily thinned down AB and highlighted it with AB/CG 1:1. Then covered all with BB before applying a final highlight with CG.
Your base coat is done. Following that you draw rough spots of Codex Grey and CB/SB 3:1 onto the coat. once this is finished you paint you spots more detailed and start do paint dots of your used colour in other areas. This you do with each colour. After that I added more or less random highlights here and there. I guess it would be a pain in the a*** to highlight everything.

great to see another armageddon log. check my log for some armageddon blood angels and other misc stuff.

They all look good, but the Urban Camo stands out the most.

All three are really well painted, but like the others I vote for the urban one.

the only downside to the urban one is, to make an army with that camo would take forever.. if you pulled it off it really would be a masterpiece army.

I love me some Steel Legion with a passion.

You paint Steel Legionnaires with considerable skill and dedication.

Logically, I now love you with a passion. Do keep it up.

Cityfight camouflage theme looks more impressive (for me). But in fact I would like also a tutorial about all 3 schemes since all are amazing and perfectly done.

In fact the urban camo took the least amount of time. Well at the moment all is pointing towards the urban camo but I'll decide once every test miniature is finished.

This is disturbing me in more than one way.
    Thank you.

Okay haven't painted much today (too busy enjoying my free time) but here the reworked trooper is:

Obviously the collar and the metal parts as well as the goggles aren't finished but besides those he is pretty much done. This is the hydroponic gardens camo.

    These guys are looking excellent.

For me it is between the urdan camo and the re worked woodland scheme, the latter of which just screams WW2 German Paratrooper which I love, although the urban scheme feels 'fluffier'

However, I would factor in how many of these guys you have to paint, so the quicker of the two to paint maybe the best option?

Re: Hive Hades - Steel Legion Log

the reworked figure looks great. With that green scheme, they would also fit in battles near the Armageddon equatorial jungles, which would be a cool touch, as some armageddon ork hunters would look at home with your force. you do an excellent job of painting hte figures faces behind the mask. I know how difficult it can be sometimes getting a brush in there to do those eyes. keep it up.

Re: Hive Hades - Steel Legion Log

Thank you for your compliment Crash especially as I adore your Steel Legion sqaud.
However, I have problems determining the time factor as I am currently testing a lot of stuff. For example the urban dude's helmet is simply boltgun metal with chainmail highlights followed by three washes of Badab Black with a final highlight of Mithril silver.

With the woodland scheme, as you so nicely put it (a friend of mine called him "fir tree"), on the other hand I painted the highlights with Shadow Grey and put in more Codex and Fortress Grey for the following highlights followed by two layers of Badab Black (the pictures of him aren't the best and don't show the highlights properly). Now there are only missing the scratches which will be done with metal colours.

So all in all it has to be the looks first and then I can only estimated the time needed for them.

@ ilikebmxbikes: I have all the parts for a Armageddon Ork hunter lying around here. I planned to put one together and use him as Marbo before I got into my army scheme decision dilemma.

All right dudes and dudesses I am off for the weekend so don't expect any updates before monday. Then I'll finish the woodland scheme trooper and start working on a Dead Space inspired one so to say a Rok strike force.

    Have a nice weekend!
