My trench table (modularish)

Well here's the deal I need to make a third segment. I want the whole board to look good but am tired of adding the wooden slatting to the trench walls. heh.

I've narrowed things down to three possible options
1 Another trench network... Its working so far.
2 A Shell blasted nomans land. circa 1916 The winning option
or 3 the Lame O way out leave it flat

That's some good trenches. Will you add some sandbag walls or bunkers to place heavy weapon teams behind? One or two shell craters? Barbed wire? Dead corpses? Oh, I see my WWI mania resurfaces.

The only thing that strikes me as odd is that you need a bit of no-man's land so that the Tyranids just won't swamp your forces on turn 2.

Well the boards are 24" by 48". and moving across trenches is Difficult terrain, Into is norm movement, within normal and getting out is difficult (unless there is a ladder).

As far as Sandbags goes I would like to add some but not if I have to make em all from GS myself.

I think barbed wire would go a long way (GW do their own fake razor wire, but i've no idea how good it is when compared to other stuff) to making the board more realistic and playable, especially against hordes like Tyranids or Orks who can easily get to you.

The rules would be pretty easy, every infantry model apart from those with wings/jump packs/jet packs and bikes takes an S_ (whatever you want, there could be varying wire types, such as regular wire that only deals a low strength hit (auto-hit), there could be denser wire that deals higher strength hits, poisoned wire that wounds on a set number...) hit with an AP of 6 (it's pretty easy to see how it would rip through the regular armour of an Ork or the weak chitin of tyranids, maybe even increase the AP for some of the other wires) and moves at half-movement at any point they attempt to cross a patch of wire (apart from running, but running into wire makes it more dangerous, so perhaps increase the strength of the hit by 1 or it's AP by 1?).

Models with jump packs/wings/jet packs move as normal over the wire, but suffer the same if they land on a patch of wire, models on bikes is tough, though, as wire could rip the tyres to shreds. Perhaps allow bike models an upgrade that decreases movement slightly but offers protection against wire? Those without the upgrade suffer the same as everyone else, but on a 6 to wound a tyre has been punctured and must be repaired before he can move again? Or has he just lost the bike and must continue on foot?

Models like MCs and Vehicles should be able to cross wire without any penalties, it's hard to see how they can't just crush it or step over it. Perhaps have tanks destroy it if they cross it? (Which means putting the tanks before your army to clear the way, but also forcing the troops into a choke point as they try to get through).

Anywho, I digress, I really want to see how this turns out, I haven't seen many trench-themed boards at all.

This looks good, but seems to have limited gaming opportunites - aren't the trenches too deep? I would build firing steps into them as without the ability to shoot out of them they are of limited use (not to mention not entirely realistic).

For the third board, definately a crater torn no mans land to fit between your two trench boards.

As far as shooting platforms go.... I'll probably end up adding them if I don't I'd propose "any unit can shoot out, but then they may be shot at and receive a 4+ cover save in the next shooting phase"

Awesome trenches! I plan on doing WWI trench-fighting in 25mm scale eventually, and this is inspiring me to jettison my other projects to get to the Western Front faster.

I've just googled Spackle, it looks like just the thing I need for my project. (it also looks delicious, but I won't test that idea out)

The trenches look great. Did you use a tactically useful layout, or are they set out just to look good?
