    Re: Ogre Maneaters

I'm home! Did I say I was going to New York for a week? Because I went to New York for a week. Thanks to everyone for all the comments!

    Amijp: Thanks!

Pumpavius: Ha! Nicola Tesla like in The Prestige? Because I could deal with that!

Ftayl: Heh heh you're more than welcome to! But don't look at the 360 one for too long, you'd probably throw up.

Kayosiv: Awards? Yay! I nominate myself for Most Ridiculously Elaborate Conversion.

    Grain Weevil: Thank you!

Great horned owl: Ohh the Gnoblar team was actually really easy. Not much conversion work, other than taking the majority of the weapons off. I wish you luck! I don't have anything planned with a bottle, but if something comes up, I'll do a tutorial.

Toshiro: Ha nice. I've never had a Warhammer Orga... Wait, you meant Ogre right? Spellcheck does wonders.

    Confessor_Atol: Cheers!

Nerevarine: Thanks! It's weird that the Ironblaster doesn't actually come with a lookout Gnoblar. It's perfect for it!

Wicked Dwarf: Thank you. Glad the fire worked out, I was a little unsure about it part way through.

Neovo: You could sound like a small child - it's the internet, everyone else does! Alright, slower next time.

Lord Dan: That's exactly how I'd like it to work! But the people I play against have seen these guys way too often to care. Oh well! The snow was just the recipe I used before, splodged over the wheels where I thought it was collect. No real technique to it, just playing until it looks right.

Emperor Norton: Yeah the cannon was meant to look like one the Sky Titans had, dragged all the way into the Empire before being put onto a steam powered chassis.

    Rhaivaen: Bingo.

Jericho: And a Steamblaster is a brand new invention! Yay!

    Kaos: Thanks!

Hrokka 'Eadsplitter: If only it had slightly better rules than it does. Is it just me that thinks a giant cannon stuffed full of cannonballs should be slightly better than two bounce roll dice?

Dutchwarlord: I'm working on it! Give me some time to learn how computers work and I'll get it sorted.

Karak Norn: Heh heh! Thanks! Heh, my Gnoblars are way too smart to jump into a cannon barrel! Alright, not all of them are that smart, but those ones didn't survive that long...

Azendral: Yeah it's still pretty busy, but I don't think it's toooo busy. I'd love to see a double cannon Ironblaster! That'd be entirely insane. I found it hard enough to fit a single one on!

Urgat: Yeah, sorry about the shaking. I had to get it done in a rather short space of time before I left. I'm going to try to find a cheap spinny thing for the next one, which should sort it out.

    Snyggejygge: Awesome will do!

Azhagmorglum: Heh yeah, you don't look at the log for a week and it's several pages longer. I love my Ogrefans!

Jonahmaul: Thanks! That is all. Oh also, the tutorial is coming, GET OFF MY BACK. It's just that the tutorials take a huge amount of time to make, and the photographing needs a long period on a bright day, so I've been waiting for the time. This week I'm free though so I should be able to at least make a start on it.

Animerik: Cheers! There was a lot of time put into it, so I'm glad it shows.

Casablanca Cat: It's at least seven!

Marcus Septim: Which rust techniques do you mean? The wrench on this Ogre was only meant to be a little dirty, I imagine he takes care of his equipment quite well (but gets distracted by designing new things more often!). Or do you mean the rust like in the rust tutorial? And what other techniques do you mean?

Reddevil: Yeah you go ahead! Check below for colours used!

Lord Azoth: Thanks! What kind of hat?

    Juicy21: Thank you!

    Ekxw: Cheers! More coming soon!

Alright, thanks for all those comments and crits! I'll work on a new method of making the 360 spinners. I really put this one up as a way of seeing the giant machine more like it is in real life. With so many bits on the machine, I thought it'd be good to see exactly how they all fit together in a way that static pictures don't really show.

So let's have some pictures eh? Not new ones I'm afraid. Having not been around for a week, I haven't done anything new! But here's some details on the Steamblaster.
For those of you new to the blog, after a miniature is done, I do a little write up to show some of the details and techniques used. Enjoooy!

    1. Let's start with the big guy himself. By now we've seen him quite often, so there's not too much to point out that other people haven't seen yet. The monocle was made of guitar wire, and the centre was made with a small piece of clear plastic from a blister pack. The ink splodges were painted with a mix of Chaos Black and Tamiya Clear Smoke. After that it was gloss varnished. I like the idea that the engineer loses his quills quite often and that every feather on the miniature is actually a quill ready to be used at any point. That's why the one in his hat is dripping ink out. I mentioned earlier in the thread the images he's scrawling. They're from a mix of sources: Da Vinci's notebooks, trigonometry diagrams, and nautical engineering. All adapted to fit the look of the cannon. The Engineer himself has a lot less equipment than most of my other Ogres, but considering that the entire platform is his, I think that's quite enough!

    2. Moving onto the platform now. We'll start with the smoke stack. The silver was done with Scorched Brown mixed with Mithril Silver, then with more Mithril Silver mixed to highlight. It was washed down in several layers with Devlan Mud, Badab Black, and watered down Scorched Brown. Then rehighlighted with Chainmail, and scratches applied. I like the smoke stack a lot actually!

    3. The gold areas I wanted quite shiny, but still a little worn. Luckily, I have an entire Space Marine army painted in the same way! It's painted with a layer of Tin Bitz, followed by two coats of Shining Gold, then Shining Gold/Mithril Silver to highlight, and Mithril Silver for a final highlight. The whole thing is then washed with Gryphonne Sepia, and finally a light wash of Badab Black in the recesses. Then gloss varnish was brushed over the top to bring the shine back up. I don't usually do the gloss varnish, but it makes a nice contrast to the rest of the platform.

    4. The banner on the front of the platform reads KF. Emperor represent!

    5. The wood took the longest of the entire thing. Man it took forever. There are seven different types of wood on the platform in total. I split them up to show when each part of the platform was created. The standing area is mostly cheap wood as I imagine it was made quite early on in the Engineer's career. The latest addition - the steam tank - has a much more fancy wooden finish. The wheels as well were added later so sport the same finish. There's one wooden panel on the steam tank in a different colour. Obviously the steam technology isn't that reliable!

    6. The Gnoblar loader. He's got earplugs, an eyepatch, and a burnt off feather. Obviously the Gnoblar on top of the cannon doesn't care too much about letting him get out of the way before firing!

    7. The little guy in the middle of the platform is actually the one aiming the cannon. Pretty important, no? I used one of the Gnoblars from the Scraplauncher build, and a complex system of cogs and gears to help to turn it. Alright, it can only turn to the left because the steam barrel is in the way, but still, it's a little manoeuvrable! The original build had the cannon in the middle of the platform, but it ended up just being far too tall, with nowhere for the crew to stand, and nowhere for the steam stack.

    8. The base is done in the same way as all the others, with lines dug in the snow for where the wheels have already passed through. The snow on the wheels is added in the same way as the snow on the boots of the other Ogres. Just sort of randomly, with more emphasis on areas that would naturally touch the ground.

    9. The barrels on the side of the platform come straight from the Ironblaster kit. They're pretty cool! The gunpowder was painted with Chaos Black highlighted with Codex Grey, then covered in a healthy amount of MiG smoke pigment. I actually had to look up what cannonballs were made of when painting them. Turns out it's iron! They're painted mostly in black, with a small amount of Chainmail added for the highlights, then washed with a few coats of Badab Black. The cannonballs in the cannon were done in the same way. I added an empty barrel with the Engineer's pistol of choice. If a regular Ogre uses a handgun as a pistol, mine obviously uses something a little more fancy!

    10. Now, the cannon. It was painted following the verdigris tutorial earlier in the log, but with a distinct difference. The bronze was painted without any bronze paint. It's done with a mix of Adeptus Battlegrey, Chaos Black, a drop of Tin Bitz, and progressively more Mithril Silver mixed in to highlight. It's painted to look like an ancient cannon dragged down from the Sky Titans' home. I imagine that after a while studying in the Empire, the Engineer went on a pilgrimage back to his homeland to find something giant and badass to complete his internship as the Engineers' College.

    11. The Gnoblar on top is my favourite part of the whole model. Other than the hat, he's pretty much standard from the Leadbelcher kit. The flame turned out well, and the OSL on him I think is the best on the thing. I purposefully painted him in lighter colours to help with the OSL effect. You'll see exactly how that helps in the upcoming tutorial.

    12. The Gnoblar lookout! He actually doesn't serve much purpose, as he only sits a tiny amount above the Ogre himself! I didn't quite realise how tall the Ogre was when making it. I think he shouts down where the enemy is, but no one on deck really listens to him. But then he could just be trying to fire at another Gnoblar who stole his shiny trinket, so it's probably for the best! This guy has the lightest skin of all the Gnoblars on the platform. I apply the same thinking that Orc skin has: the tougher the Gnoblar, the darker his skin. And this guy spends his life on top of a crow's nest out of harm's way! All the Gnoblars have the same uniform. Too many colours would make the Steamblaster too busy. I imagine they made the uniform themselves out of offcuts from the engineering school. Nothing says "don't pick on me" to the other Gnoblars like the threat of shooting a giant cannon at them during battle, and this uniform is one way of making sure the others know exactly who they belong to!

    13. There are two shields bolted onto the platform. One on the crow's nest, and the other between the wheels on the right hand side. Both are taken from the same place (more likely liberated by the Gnoblars from the walls of the school rather than from a fallen enemy), so have the same colour background. The one between the wheels has a design painted in non metallic metal (one of the few places I'm happy to use the technique), and the one on top has "Sigmar" written on the banner.

    14. The chest on the back (which I added ropes to because otherwise - like on the official model - it just hangs there without any supports) is painted in the same red as you'll find throughout the army. It's a spot colour that ties all the miniatures together. You'll also find this red on every armour plate bolted onto the platform. This is the first miniature I've used a brighter red on in the whole army. The feather tops and a single wire on the steam tank are done a lot brighter to bring a little focus to the miniature. The reds help to break up the large areas of wood and dull metal.

    15. Lastly, a short word on the metals used. There are different metals throughout the model, from many different sources. The cannon is centuries old, so the bronze is very weathered. By comparison, the mechanism used to make the cannon turn is much newer bronze. I imagine the Engineer got it from an Ogre settlement during his pilgrimage. It's got a little verdigris, but it otherwise quite shiny. The metals on the steam tank are dirty but not too weathered (there's more rust around the areas that have frequent contact with steam though), and the other silver areas (which aren't too plentiful) are older, dirtier, and rustier. These differences do make the entire piece look a little inconsistent, but considering that the machine is meant to have been built over several stages, and the design constantly updated (the Engineer is actually working on a shorter cannon design on his parchment), it makes a lot of sense to have such varied materials.

That's that then! Hope you all enjoyed reading a little about what goes on in my head.

This coming week I'll be working on the OSL tutorial, and I've already started on a new Ogre. I'll be reinforcing one existing unit in the army, a cookie goes to the first person to guess which unit.

Thanks again for all the comments left, I really appreciate it! To come back from a week away and have so many to reply to is really awesome.

Seven different wood types throughout the model? Man, I see them now. The grey/browns, the red/browns, the yellow/browns. Absolutely brilliant.

You need to enter that thing into a Golden Daemon. Please, for us.

Lord Dan: Oh don't worry, I have plans for Golden Demon! Not Ogre plans, but something cool!

Reddevil: Haha are the skills required to paint a fence not transferable? This next Ogre won't have wood, but when I do one I'll make sure to do a tutorial.

I went on a 5km run today. It was rubbish. I hate running.

Alright, enough chit chat, a new Ogre:

Wait, that's not an Ogre! That's a Gnoblar! Hmm... we seem to be experiencing technical difficulties, I'll try to sort it out. In the meantime, let the guessing begin! I think it's fairly obvious where he's going to be coming from, but I'll only give it up if you guess what unit it will be for too!

    Re: Ogre Maneaters

Lord Dan & Amijp: Nope! I've actually got a Dwarf Miner Irongut planned. I don't know whether he'll see light of day in 3000 points, but I certainly hope so! An Ogre covered in candles with a giant pickaxe, and a Gnoblar canary in a cage? Yes please!

Cragum: That's some outside the box thinking!

Catferret: There's a third Matrix film? I thought there was only one? *FINGERS IN EARS NOT LISTENING*

Lord Cedric: That's some even more outside the box thinking! And quite an educated guess considering I didn't use the Rhinox from my Ironblaster... Unfortunately it's not right though. I have plans for that Rhinox.

Reddevil: One thing I'd recommend straight off is to take all your browns out and put them all on your painting desk. Decide just how rickety looking you want the platform, and then go for it. The more different types of wood, the more rickety it'll look. That's why on certain bits I wanted more considered (like the steam barrel and the middle wheels) I just used one type of wood. Other parts (like the standing platform and the front wheels) have a lot more types of wood, so look a little more thrown together. If you start with the same base coat (which you have!), and pick a light brown for the highlight colour (I used Deneb Stone) throughout, then use various different browns for the main colour, then you'll end up with all the wood looking like it belongs together, but came from different sources. If you use different highlight colours then the whole thing will look a little eclectic. Also, make heavy use of washes and glazes when you've highlighted the wood. Green, purple, red, and of course all the different browns all work really well to give the wood slightly different tints.

Karak Norn: Thanks! That's actually an amazing idea. If I hadn't have already ordered the parts to go in the wheelbarrow, that'd be a shoe in. I will give him a long beard though, that sounds fun!

Jonahmaul: Haha! Living in the west country I have enough interaction with farmers on a daily basis, thank you!

    _______________________________________________

    Well.... Cragum was right!

Having just finished an Empire Engineer, I figured the best thing to do would be to make a Dwarf Engineer... Yeah, I didn't really think that one through.
With the new edition of the army book, Leadbelchers have a minimum unit size of three, and I only had two. The pirate Maneater was standing in for one for a while, but now it's time to make a new permanent addition to the unit. I had a bunch of choices of which ones to make, but decided that the other options were all a little too weird to include in the army at this stage. They may make an appearance, but we'll see. For example, I was thinking about doing a Dwarf Slayer automated shoulder mounted Goblin Hewer. It was going to be based on a water wheel design, with a Gnoblar loader putting in axes at the back, and accidentally getting his foot caught in one of the loading cups. A funny design, but yeah, maybe a little too weird. So I thought I'd reel it in a bit and go for an organ gun. It's still a way away from the typical cannon models though.

I'm currently working on his armour. He's not going to be as heavily armoured as my other Dwarf (who on the army list has heavy armour). I think I'll be doing this by leaving the arms completely bare (maybe with a short tunic), but still giving him the traditional Dwarf chest piece and short chainmail skirt thing.

Originally his Gnoblar was carrying around a spare gun, but I just couldn't make it look good. The gun is a little too big, and with the huge gun the Ogre is carrying, the whole miniature ended up about 90% organ gun! The new Gnoblar will be wheeling a barrow full of cannonballs. I've put an order in for some tiny ball bearings, which should be arriving next week.

That's it for today! This afternoon I'm going for cream tea, and then off to a fancy cocktail party! Hooray!

I'll also throw in a vote for that shoulder-mounted Goblin-Hewer contraption you mentioned (because there's voting now, apparently).

Looking great, really looking forward to seeing it finished and then painted. I have a question about your wood guide. When you say you use Denheb stone as your highlight colour for all the woods do you mean you use this to mix in with whatever brown you've used? I think this is what you mean (otherwise everything would be really light) but just want to clarify.
