My Painting Challenge - 3750pts of Orcs & Goblins by the end of the year!

    Hello my fellow Warseerites!

Yesterday I sat down and thought about how large my Orcs & Goblins army would be with my planned acquisitions and I found that is totalled about 3750pts (give or take depending on magic items). I decided that I want to paint this up as fast as possible, preferably before the end of the year. And then I figured that would make a pretty nice challenge for myself, to paint 3750pts of O&G in the remainder of this year, after a quick calculation I found that I need to paint about 13.5pts a day in order to accomplish that which I should be able to do if I'm not to lazy. But I figured this kind of paint log would help keep me on my toes.

So, I'm going to attempt to update this post every day with my progress, I'm not aiming on painting an award-winning army (I don't have the skills for that) but I'm hoping to get it into a good tabletop standard.

This is the list of the (current) plan for what the horde will be composed by (Still subject to change and not all is acquired yet):

Where is the poll option for: You are mental to attempt this, but I really wish you luck anyway!

I like the colors you have chosen for the Goblins, they all compliment each other very well.

I always like logs like this where the painter sets himself a goal. But, I've seen many logs like this in the past and I have never actually seen anyone see it through to the end.

I wish you luck, and I think that if you can get 2000 points finished, you should consider it a success. However, I have to vote that you will lose interest. I really hope you prove me wrong though!

If you dont manage to finish Gork and Mork will point and laugh at you. Now you have to ask yourself... Do you want this? NO! So you will work.. You will sweat..(not on the minis, bad for painting!) and you will wiin! WIN!

So far its solid painting and i think that if you keep it on this level and just rock on you will not only have a finished army, it will look good when put together as a whole. And on top of this you will gain routine as long as you keep painting and it will show in the end of the year i garantuee you. Look at a couple of the other plogs for inspiration and have a fun time, i will keep on checking up on you so you dont slack. Or i will send Gork and Mork upon you for Great Mockery!

    Good luck and Cheers-Kaos

Thanks, I'm glad you like the colours, I was hoping they'd compliment each other, glad you think they do.

I hope to prove you wrong as well, hope I manage to stay focused the whole way cause I have a lot of little guys in need of a little love

Thanks Kaos, I sure don't want Mork or even Gork laughing at me so I better keep it up. Glad you like the painting so far, hope I can keep it up or hopefully even improve

Here comes the update for today, was a busy day at work so only got two models done, luckily one of them was the unit netter, netting me an additional 35 points (bad pun intended).

    The two new guys

    Update of the day:

Today work was murder again and I only got two ordinary goblins done, but still, 8 more points in the bank so to speak. And only 5 more to go to have my first unit done

Tomorrow I'm off from work as well and I just bought new lamps (been out for *cough* a year or so) so now I finally have light to paint at home as well, this *might* speed things up

Well done, you are closer to your 3750 point goal, and all the goblins so far are very nicely painted. I also thank you as seeing your project log has put me in a painting mood, so some guardsmen may get some paint, or mabey I shall stick with fantasy and paint some Dwarves.

Don't even think about failure! Just do it! Loot! burn! pillage!WAAAAAAAAGHHHHHH!!!!

...On a slightly more serious note, 3750 points of horde in 8 months is doable but tough. Looks like you've already settled on a base + highlight scheme, which is a pretty good tabletop. Past that, if you don't do it already you'll want to start doing batched groups of your rank and file guys. I didn't do this for the longest time but when I started doing batches of 4 to 10 (Usually 5) I noticed it took about 30% less time then doing them all singly, time saved from not cleaning brushes, switching paints, looking for colors etc. as often. I don't paint nearly as often as I could (should?) but when I'm on a roll I do something like this, not on consecutive days though:

Day 1: Assemble, clean, texture and prime a unit.
Day 2: Make, texture and paint movement tray, test model or two.
Days 3 to X: Batch of 7 goblins or 4 orcs completed

With each "day" being roughly 2.5, 3.5 hours if you paint like me, which is pretty slow with 2-4 shades per color. I also like to intersperse different units in between the huge amounts of RnF guys for variety- characters, warmachines, monsters, other small units and terrain are good to break up the monotony.

Thanks, I shall do my best to row it ashore!

Doing batches is really good and I do it with my tomb kings skeletons, however when I do it with my gobbos (tried once before) I found that I kept missing stuff on them lol. I think I'm generally the kind of guy that prefers to finish one thing at the time even though it takes longer

Only thing I do in batches now is assembly and priming, painting I stick to single model even though it is very ineffective time-wise

Thanks again though for your tip, it is a very good one

Alright, now to the update for today, got the last two gobbos in the first unit done and they are now ready to fight (or run away) all in the name of Gork and Mork!!!

Also here is my first WIP picture, a snotling base that I started on, hopefully I'll finish that one and another one tomorrow.

Painted today: 2 Night Goblins with spears for 8 points

Re: My Painting Challenge - 3750pts of Orcs & Goblins by the end of the year!

Interesting idea. I'll follow this closely.

Last year I was able to paint something like 1000 pts of Skaven (and I mean solely Clanrats and Slaves) within what would add up to around 3 weeks, though admittedly with less sophisticated base modelling, so I think it's definitely possible if you manage to keep up the interest.

Sadly I couldn't be bothered to touch them ever since, because you know, after 100 Slaves and 100 Clanrats, you fall into a delirium at one point.

Maybe I should join in the fun and see how quickly I can finish the rest?
