Thread: 820th Panzergruppen

    820th Panzergruppen

Hi everyone, long time watcher not often poster. Thought I might post some pics of my Guard Army, what I've already done and what's in progress at the moment. There are two parts to my army, the 107th Caeldoni Regiment of Foot - primarily light infantry, and the 820th Panzergruppen - the armoured might of the army about which this thread will mostly be about.

Fluffwise the idea is that both units were decimated in separate battles and combined for the next conflict. This came about when after painting a number of my tanks I found that they looked nothing like the paint I'd done for the infantry. And I couldn't be bothered repainting them....

Anyway, comments welcome as always. First I'll post some combined shots, then put some individual vehicles when I've got more time.

Its a nice scheme for the tanks and the camoflage is actually fairly effective. When looking at picture 2 some of the tanks seem to merge into one, which would make them much harder to hit if I were firing upon them. (or mabey its just my eyes as I am tired) Either way, nice painting and nice tanks. Im a tread head too.

Cheers mate, probably a case of bad photos as well.

I guess I didn't explain the cam scheme in the first post - I saw a pic a while ago of a Leopard II in snow cam, with similar looking sharp edges etc, when I started painting my first tank I tried to find it again but couldn't, so started my own. It's an urban kinda theme, hence the shortened comms antennae etc.

ANYway, here's the first close ups, the first veh I painted, a Chimera. Named 'Gudrun', one of the Valkyries from the Nordic Myths. You can see it's a pretty average paint job, but like I said it was my first attempt.

The next veh I painted was a Basilisk, first attempt at highlighting, but no inking or weathering as you can see. I'm in the middle of converting it to a Griffon, so you can chop and change between the two at will. Just need to rivet up the shield on the Griffon and paint. No name for her yet, will get to that soon

Next on the list was my first Russ, only recently named "Einherjar" - the heroic dead gathered from the battlefields by the Valkyries. Some more highlighting and the first attempt at battle damage.

And the next off the line, a Demolisher. You can see I was going for something different each time, rather than actually build a list I was just making models I liked. Named Skadi (literally translated to destruction), after the wife of the sea god Njord and daughter of the frost giant Thiassi.

The names all come from Germanic/Nordic mythology, with the idea being the Panzergruppen is drawn from a World with Germanic heritage.

Stop me if I'm boring anyone...

    Re: 820th Panzergruppen

I guess I really should get to what I'm working on at the moment, but need to get through what I've already done first. OCD? Maybe....

So next on the list is the mighty Baneblade "Brynhild". Named after the Valkyrie that defied Odin and was banished to earth to be rescued, and then betrayed, by Sigurd.

This was my first real attempt at weathering after getting the Painting Masterclass from Forgeworld. I think I took things a little bit too far with the ink and the sponge work, but some parts look quite good

    Re: 820th Panzergruppen

Now we come to the first of the four newest vehs, the one's I'm most happy with. I did them all at the same time and pumped them out pretty quickly, in the lounge in front of the TV

First is "Angrbrod" ("Distress-Bringer"), named after a frost giantess. The mistress of Loki and mother of monsterous offspring.

A regular Russ, all weapons are magnetised for flexibility, and I've made but not painted a punisher and exterminator cannon for it to use against a mate who plays orks.

Next of the production line was a Chimera "Grimhild" - Queen of the Niebelungs, famed an feared for her magic.

I bought the Chimera off TradeMe (a NZ version of eBay) for a very good price, probably because it had been destroyed in detail by the previous owner. Lots of glue and a number of paint jobs later is looked like cr@p. It had been built as a Hellhound so I rebuilt it from bits from my bits box.

I stripped it in brake fluid and carved off a lot of the old glue that wouldn't weaken., reassembled it and started from scratch.

    Re: 820th Panzergruppen

And then came the hellhound. Got the kit of christmas ages ago and hadn't got around to putting it together. Then the new Guard codex came out so I thought it would be useful. It stayed just undercoated for a while until I found the motivation to get into it.

Not named yet, will get there eventually...

Really like that camouflage pattern! Similar sort of thing to what I was trying to do with my stuff. Also really like your naming convention for these guys. Tanks should have big scary names, and you don't get much more big and scary than Norse mythology :P

    Re: 820th Panzergruppen

And lastly of the completed vehs is another Chimera. For this one I bought the tracks and sides off eBay for less than $5. Then built the chassis etc from plasticard. Riveted most of it until I got bored LOL.

It's not finished in these photos but I have done it since I took them. Will take some more pics when I get a chance

Cheers mate Good to get some feedback LOL

I started the naming convention after reading "Watchers over the Rhine" by John Ringo. They make a big ***** off tank and named it Brynhild, so it started with the Baneblade then I moved on to name the rest of them out of a book of Mythology I've got.

Currently I'm working on three sentinels to add to my one and only one I currently have. Suppose I should put up some photos of that up soon LOL

    Re: 820th Panzergruppen

Funnily enough I myself ordered three sentinels (And a Shadowsword. The voices told me I was unfairly favouring Baneblades so i had to buy it ) just yesterday! Be interested in seeing how yours turn out as I'm not sure how well my scheme and embellishments will translate onto a [much smaller] walker. Need space on there somewhere for the regimental insignia and the pilots personal heraldry, and I'd quite like to be able to fit the name of the sentinels on there as well if I can.

    Re: 820th Panzergruppen

Awesome!! Wish I could afford a Shadowsword, maybe when I win the lottery...

Once I've finished the sentinels, and the two commissars sitting on my desk, it will be back into my Dark Angels with a vengence, they've been neglected. I don't even have a playable army worth of them lol

    Re: 820th Panzergruppen

Finally some more progress. Just finished three sentinels that I rescued off Trademe a while ago for very cheap. Just need to complete the pilots and my changed to the ROPS for the two scouts.

The one on the far left was my first sentinel, done ages ago as you may be able to tell from the painting. All of them now have magnetised weapons, with three lascannons, three multi-lasers and a plasma cannon to choose from. Not sure how I'm going to use them yet, maybe in two squadrons of two? Two armoured and two scout. Will have to play test them.

    Comments still welcome

Excellent work. Nice weathering and I love the bases (permission to pillage ideas from them for the bases on my ones?).

Cheers guys, and help yourselves, I've stolen enough ideas off this place it's about time I gave something back I wanted to show how mobile they are in rough (difficult) terrain, hence the tank trap and elevated feet positions. I also bent some of the 'toes' on the feet so they wrapped around the obstacles they were on, as if they were gripping.

I think they might be the last showing for a while, I'm moving on to my Dark Angels. Need to build up enough for a playable list. So post on here or make a new log?
