Deadite's Daemonic tribute - Eyes of Tzeentch

    Hi all,
A local club is running a "Paint and Play" league for the next few months. Every month you are allowed to purchase and paint 250pts worth of an army and use it for league games. Bonus points are awarded for everything painted month to month.
It was this league that prompted me to start a new army. One I'd never tried before; Daemons.
I recalled several months ago, an army that really caught my attention. An army that inspired me to try to create something I've never tried before. skabradisdead created an army consisting of nothing but blobs of greenstuff and table-tennis balls and it was fantastic!

I had to take a crack at creating my own version of this awesome army idea.
I've heard it stated that the greatest compliment is imitation, so below I'll present my take on skabradisdead's original idea.

The first 1000pts are done and the next 1000pts are in the making.
    My 1000pts army consists of;
    Lord of Change (big eyeball)
    Daemon Prince (toothy mcgee)
3 flamers (you can probably pick them out...)
27 Horrors + 1 "changeling" (should be obvious)

Well done. The painting style is almost luridly cartoonish. And one can tell easily which conversion represents which daemon.

Ha! Funny you say that. One of the first comments by one of the younger league members was "Balloons?" (he hadn't seen the detail yet), followed shortly there-after by "they look like some sort of Yu-gi-oh monsters".
    <sigh>

Thanks again! Luckily, most of the wargear available to daemons is not very tangible and can be left up to interpretation... and I don't typically take a lot of wargear anyway.
I tried to keep them roughly the same size as existing models so I face the same kind of "cover" issues as any one else playing a GW made army.
The little eyeballs are the same approximate size as a standard Space Marine, the flamers are about as big as an Assault marine or Terminator, the DP's are the same core size as other DP's (sans arms, legs and wings). The only model I'm not sure of is the Lord of Change, as I don't own one. But I figured he's at least bigger than a DP, so I'm probably pretty close.

@sork21 -thanks for the kind words!

    And strangely very fitting

    Very very impressive!

A fitting tribute to skarbadisdead's army

May I ask how you did the sizing and the details like the flamers flames and the princes teeth?

I hope to get WIP pics of the remaining 1000pts, with some marines for comparison, soon. Should explain everything.

I found some various sized wooden marbles at a local Hobby Lobby.
The smallest ones were 1" in diameter, which is about the same size as a marine's shoulder width (I actually took a marine to the shop for comparison). Just add a bit of a "flying stand" and they're just about as tall as a marine. Cut out the "eye" to leave some eyelids, carve some various wrinkles and pockmarks. I have some really tiny Dremel bits for this. The Dremel tool is arguably one of the best Christmas presents I've ever received.
The flamers were 1 1/2" wooden marbles with greenstuff flames added. I have a nicely shaped tool for the flame patterns. Though, the first batch (shown) has a carved Fimo 'hat' to lend support to the flame trail. The next batch will be all GS flames.
The Daemon price was a 2" (?... will have to check) marble. Cut out the mouth, add some teeth carved from various size of plastic sprue (the Dremel tool is your friend!), greenstuff skin and gumline.
Lord of Change was a Ping Pong (table tennis) ball with some random wire bits I found and greenstuff for the optical cord thing.

My home PC is down for some repairs, but I hope to get more pics up soon, including some Battle pics.
    Thanks!

Wow I really like your army. Its an awesome idea and beautifully executed.

It would be nice to see some comparison shots next to some marines.

I would like to play this army with my Necron Cubes. We could have some entertaining shape wars.

Have to agree with the above its a brilliant army - its also quite bizarre in that I know what everything is without having to really look at your list.

Might have to give this one a try myself although.. how on earth did you do that flame work?

Well, another month is just about up in the 40k Paint and Play league, which means I need to get my butt in gear and paint some stuff!
As promised, here are some WIP's with marines in the frames for scale.

I'm not super happy with the latest Deamon Prince, but it'll do.

I have a little more than 750 points left after this batch before I'm up to a 2k army. There will be more Horrors (see other color ideas), more flamers... but... I'm coming up empty with ideas for a Soul Grinder.

Does anyone have any ideas for a Soul Grinder that would fit this theme?

I thought maybe a Cacodemon (google it)... but not really jazzed about it.
I thought maybe a full head with various weapons... but might be too much work for little return.

maybe something along the lines of the Spider Head in "THE THING" http://cdn-www.mania.com/content_pic...57a6_large.jpg

Re: Deadite's Daemonic tribute - Eyes of Tzeentch

I like the Cacodemon idea alot. Kinda combines the demonprince with the eye theme of the rest of the army. Go for it.

Pain Elemental would work too, with a lost soul being fired out?

Re: Deadite's Daemonic tribute - Eyes of Tzeentch

You could go with some kind of floating Brain with tentacles...

Re: Deadite's Daemonic tribute - Eyes of Tzeentch

Biggest issue I have with a cacodemon/pain elemental, is that I don't want it's cartoony visage to clash too much with the cartoon-y style of the army. I would really have to "clean it up" to match styles.
The thing is going to be quite large, just like a standard Soul Grinder, I want it to fill out a similar profile so there's no questions or concerns for Line of Sight. A cacodemon of that size might not fit the theme very well.

There's also the "lost soul" idea that tophat-and-pipe put out (in an indirect way...).
    What about something like this?
    http://www.parkerinfo.com/dmdo/d3b.jpg
maybe just add some spider legs or something...

Floating brain with tentacles... well, I don't want to upstage the LoC too much If i did a brain, it would have teeth and a brainstem. But then it would look smarter than the LoC...and we just can't have that from a big lumbering machine!

Re: Deadite's Daemonic tribute - Eyes of Tzeentch

My first advice is to not do a soulgrinder. I don't like them at all, and if you ask around in the daemon tactica people will tell you they don't scale up well in the higher point games....but I'll just assume your set on the idea....as you didn't ask for advice on your list.

Are you familiar with D&D beholders? I would do something along those lines...a big eye with a gaping mouth and several eyestalk tentecle things ontop to reprsent the harvest cannon (or whatever it's called). If you do tongue, you can make a huge tongue coming out of the mouth, if you do phlem...you could sculpt a giant nose on it with one of the eyestalks holding one nostrel closed, like he's going to snot rocket someone...
