What order should I read the Horus Heresy series in?

    Hi all

I'm coming to the end of what I'm reading at the moment, and will start the Horus Heresy series at the end of the week.

My question is what order should I read the series in?

I don't know most of the titles, and I'm not sure if the series is chronologically laid out, or if the books are separate from each other.

Can someone please put me up a list, start ---> current?

    Many thanks

Re: What order should I read the Horus Heresy series in?

Traditionally the first to the last book in order is the way to do it

ok Joking aside, and actually being helpful

Horus Rising - Dan Abnett - April 2006
False Gods - Graham McNeill - June 2006
Galaxy in Flames - Ben Counter - Oct 2006
The Flight of the Eisenstein - James Swallow - March 2007
    Fulgrim - Graham McNeill - July 2007
Descent of Angels - Mitchel Scanlon - October 2007
    Legion - Dan Abnett - March 2008
Battle for the Abyss - Ben Counter - August 2008
    Mechanicum - Graham McNeill - December 2008
Tales of Heresy - Kyme & Priestley - April 2009[3]
Fallen Angels - Mike Lee - July 2009[4]
    A Thousand Sons - Graham McNeill - March 2010

    Taken from Wikipedia.

I've read the first two and enjoyed them muchly

Re: What order should I read the Horus Heresy series in?

Tales of Heresy is a collection of short stories that don't really sit at any particular point within the series.

If you wanted a chronological order, the above list is pretty much on the mark. Some intersect and overlap.

I don't think you could read them in strictly chronological order; A Thousand Sons starts well before Horus Rising and ends after Galaxy In Flames. Descent of ... and Fallen Angels are similarly tricky. Tales Of Heresy seems to mostly occur before the rest of the series. After all, one of the stories even takes place before the Great Crusade.

Haha, well I guess I left the door open for that one didn't I? Re-reading my question, I should have also expected "from front to back" or "page 1 through to the end"

Thanks for the replies everyone, I suspected them to be in no particular order, therefore I will go through in publication order, and start with Horus Rising.

Many thanks for the list as well Hypaspist, very helpful!

definatly in the order posted above its easy to follow and tales of hearsy is a nice little break from the story and you get to see how some of the less talked about legions work. also a great story about the emporer in there.

personally if you just wanted to read about the heresy id leave out the dark angels books

and id skip battle for the abyss because it is probably the worst black library book ever

the best soldiers the galaxy have ever seen and they have the accuracy of your basic stormtrooper chasing a woman with a couple of croissants on the side of her head

I had it recommended to me that reading them in the order of release was the best idea. The first few books, Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames follow on so that would make a great deal of sense! I am about half-way through Flight of the Eisenstein and there have been a few little bits here and there that made more sense having read the previous books in order and I'm guessing that this may continue.

    What Hypaspist said.

They're usually cheap (£4) on play.com, but i'm a stickler for having the border colours all the same, so i buy them off the shelf.

Same here. To me they're still a new concept.

flight of the eisenstein has a couple of mistakes that dont make sense if you've read the previous books

Re: What order should I read the Horus Heresy series in?

The Horus Rising trilogy is probably the best place to start, and Flight of the Eisenstein almost follows on directly from it, so I'd at least recommend those four (although the first half of Flight of the Eisenstein really annoyed me - it did get a lot better)
After that it doesn't really seem to matter on the order so much as far as I can tell.
In the Grim Darkness of the Far Grim Dark there is only Grim Darkness, and skulls.

I am rather picky about such things too.

Just popped to Waterstones (UK bookshop), but they had none of the first three, so I didn't bother - I'll go back another week.

It might actually force me to write something for a change, instead of getting distracted.

I'd say read them in the order they were published too. The first 5(? - upto fulgrim) I'd say def need to be read in order. Also DoA before FoA and a 1k sons before perspero(sp?) burns when it's released.

Re: What order should I read the Horus Heresy series in?

I don't think they need to be read in any particular order because we already know what happens, and the books are just filling in the details. Reading them out of order is not going to spoil anything.

However, the first 3 should be read in order because the follow the same story line. Having said that, some of the books are not very good and are probably worth skipping, such at those written by Ben Counter.

OT, but this myth annoys me. The stormtroopers in ANH exhibited incredible accuracy. Firing at people you have been ordered to let escape, and having all your shots land close enough that you look like you are trying to hit them without actually hitting them, all while shooting from the hip and running -increduble!
