Slaaaaaanesh makes terrain he always dreamed of

Hi folks I have made a lot of scenery recently so as I put the finishing touches to them I will post them in a dedicated thread.

First up four pillars dedicated to the main chaos gods.

I tried to make each one distinctive to their deity so:

Slaanesh - I tried to make it look as though the skin was alive and moving around bubbling out into beckoning faces which is why the icon is not crisply defined as the skin is constantly in motion.

Khorne - A strong brass icon is mounted on a red pillar flanked by flames

Nurgle - This pillar is significantly fatter than the others and has a lazy lean to give a more bloated effect, all wet painted with various greens and browns.

Tzeentch - Again the shape of this pillar is a bit like a bird's beak. I wasn't too sure what to do fo this one but the glowing glyphs came out nicely, well from arms length anyway. This was painted silver with a blue wash over the top.

All the pillars were made from artcard cut to form the four sides of the pillars before polyfiller or as I've found out recently spackle as it's known in verious other parts of the world. All the texture is just me proding my fingers or smoothing off particular edges to give four very different finishes. The flames were made by pinching and gently pulling outwards.

Those look really cool. I agree with mrtn, some dead grass will make them look even better.

Really like the pillars with the representation of the four gods. They are looking great. Well done.

    Really great Idea.
I think the bases would look better a little bigger.
Maybe add some broken looking rocks and ground as if the pillars are erupting from the ground?

Solid idea and execution. You should paint streaks of Gloss Varnish running down the Nurgle pillar as though it's pus. The bases could do with some work. Why not lots of small crystals on the Tzeentch one (as seen here, simple method)? And some glued-on paintball shots and glass pearls, in effect bubbling ooze, on the Nurgle one? And weapons sticking up from the ground on the Khorne one, or lots of fire?

As for the Slaanesh one - and considering your log name [shudders] - I'm relieved to find a reassuring lack in most vital organs. Perhaps just put some grass on that one's base. Please?

    Looking forward to see more!

Cool thanks so much for the support guys, there seems to be a lot of support for improving the bases and I agree.

I will therefore cut out round diameter bases and glue the existing pillars onto them. Seeing as they are intended for 40k and Warhammer fantasy this should work fine.
This will give me more space to make the bases interesting with the dead grass, rock, slime and crystal suggestions.

And yes 'N0th1ng c4n b34t 3lv3s' the slaanesh one could have been far sicker, but oddly until you pointed it out I never thought that...... ARghhh you've perverted my 'innocent' little mind

Really nice idea, they've turned out lovely. I second the idea of putting some gloss varnish on the nurgle one to make some parts look moist, although the texture looks good enough with or without it.

Right these totems, pillars are done. I took onboard the crits and applied them to the second phase of the builds. They now have matching diameter bases to tie them all together although It'll be a rare scenario for all four to be in use during a game. Maybe one of those daemon in fighting specific kill scenarios like in White dwarf.

So the scale boy Ork and I give you the four chaos pillars! (part deux)

p.s. I have dead static grass on order for those calling for it.

An arial shot, which one will Mr Ork boy go for? well you could prpbably guess which one.

Close ups on the Slaanesh and Tzeentch pillars

The major change here was to add the ghoul arms reaching from below the pillar, notice in partiular a reflective effect of one hand in the slaanesh symbol.

I made the pillar more dynamic by adding a flaming skull and eyeball coming out of a magical tomb as if summoned from it. Because I imagine the tzeentch pillar to be metallic/reflective I tried stippling the flame coulour lightly on to the pillar where the flame trail had whooshed past.

Re: Slaaaaaanesh makes terrain he always dreamed of

Close ups on the Khorne and Nurgle pillars

I added hanging chains on the 'front' of the totem to complete the large brass khorne icon and on the other side juiced up a rather bland face with a blood chalice mini-diorama. I also attempted my first glowing effect on the rocks faceing the flames coming from the pillars. I don't think I quite achieved the look but you get the picture. Any hints in this area would be appreciated.

I haven't got any gloss varnish but I remembered that old GW brown ink left a shiny residue so I put some of that on to simulate the puss seeping into the pool below. I also added some brown ink to the blood dripping from the bloodletter mouth on the Khorne pillar too. Thinking about buying somewater effect to fill that pool up with.

    Thats all for folks

Really nice work on all of them! I keep looking at them and being inspired to make some of my own. I especially like the brass sections and flames on the Khorne one, and the book/fireball on the Tzeentch one.

Suggestions: maybe some skulls around the base of the Khorne one, and a random idea that just popped to mind is if it would be possible to embed some small pieces of mirror into the Slaanesh or Tzeentch one, as a further weirdness touch.

Also, I vote for a fifth one, a broken one dedicated to Malal

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll try and rustle up a few skulls to add on. Hmm didn't think of using actual mirrors, could be interesting for a future project as I think these are done for now. Possibly as add on themed scenery to be fielded on the board when specific pillars are required.

Who the heck is Malal...... google wikipedia.... hmm interesting I don't think I will do anything on this god yet maybe if GW embelished on the fluff later.

Thumbs up Re: Slaaaaaanesh makes terrain he always dreamed of

Ah, the pillars got a face-lift! I especially like the Tzeentch one; it's ingenious. The Slaanesh one - well, it's decent still (and thank gods for that!) but have the right look with those arm and the rocky surrounding ground, which looks a bit like convulsing. The Nurgle one is better, though I personally feel there is something missing - perhaps some bleached areas toward the pillar's top, and streaks of Leviathan purple among the green and brown? It usually pulls the Nurgley look off. The Nurgle symbol could have some yellow streaked in it - perhaps a light drybrush of yellow in crescents inside the holes, at their lower edge? (In short, I think the Nurgle pillar needs more colour to look really sick.)

The Brown Ink (ah, wonderful old stuff, although half-forgotten already by Devlan Mud!) is well applied in the blood beneath the Bloodletter chalice - it gives a lot of depth to the blood, which is always good.

As for the Khorne one, I think you've pulled off the flame effect on the base nicely (though the yellow should be closest to the flame, the red the most farthest from it). Now, I wouldn't be able to put my finger on what needs improvement had it not been for a friend's Daemon army with Flamers (extra, sculpted flames on their bases) that required a lot of fire-effect-painting. He pulled it off brilliantly, and as such I think I know what you need to do to better the Khorne pillar:

You've got to paint the fire from the inside out, reverse from how one normally paints models (shades in the recesses, deep in; highlights and light areas on the crests and protruding bits, high up). This guide explains it correctly and gets most of it. However, as a 'Eavy Metal painting guide once concluded, don't shy from going on dark red (Scab Red) towards the flames' tops, with some black, or grey/black, at the tips. That way, you get a hint of smoke, and a nice rounding-off. Also, paint from the inside out - i.e. skull white and light yellow should remain in the recesses; fiery orange and blood red shall be where you normally would like to highlight.

As for the signature, quality comments gets sigged. Simple as that.

    They came out great.
They where good before, but now they are really top notch.
The Slaanesh one is the most dynamic, but I really like the Khorne one too.
The little Nurgling almost looks cute.
