    Gothic Resin Terrain

Hello - I'm new here, and wanted to start a project log, which will be ongoing.

I've been looking through the other logs, and have been humbled by the impressive work that goes on here. I have a passion for modelling, but I don't really game that much - which normally means I don't get feedback on my models from people in the hobby.

So I thought I'd post here - I'm totally open to suggestions and criticism - this is an ongoing project, so hopefully should be able to keep it going.

Ok, I cast using resin, from my own custom master models. I use a number of materials inc. styrene, sculpey, silicone putty - mold using RTV silicone and cast using 2 part polyester resin. I also mix fillite into the resin to make it more brittle (good for ruins) and give it a rougher texture.

So here are some pics of my progress so far - it's totally modular - but I don't know how it'd fair in a game. I'm only half way through painting 1 of the buildings so far, the larger one needs more texture on the rubble etc. The scale is roughly the same as the GW Cities of Death kits, so I guess it'll be ok - but any thoughts are defo appreciated!

Future plans - more modular pieces, redo the roof balustrade and gargoyles!

    Thanks for looking

    Can I just say, ....... GIEF!!...NOW!!.

    These look absolutely marvelous.

Sorry not much of a criticism but I wish I could make my terrain pieces like that.

    Wow, thanks guys!

I intend on completeing the large building this week, the smaller one just needs a few touches to the base - and I've just cast enough pieces for a tower. So I've got lots to work on, and I'll post here once I've made progress.

    Thanks again!

I think those look excellent. Have you got any pictures of what the original looked like (before you made the mold)?

For these pieces I used styrene sheet, mainly for the texture it has, but also coz it's easy to work with for this kind of thing. Unfortunately the masters never make it past it the molding stage - I basically have to scrape them out of the silicone once the mold has cured, and they just rip apart.

I will be doing more variations, so next time I do a master - I'll take a pic and post it here.

I'll also post more pics once they're more complete - and get some closeups of the details on there. The Mrs is out this Friday, so should get a fair bit done then

They look very good, so what does it cost to produce the large ruin in resin?

    Bugbait out
The actual resin isn't too much tbh - I use a 2 part resin, that's £30 for 1Kg - altho postage is normally £8.50 on top of that. These molds are actually the 4th set that I've done, and I've managed to design each set to use less resin each time.

The first lot where huge - only did 1 mold and got about 20casts per 1Kg. So I basically got 20window sections, and borders for £30. Now with these molds I get 3 window sections, a door section and various extras in 1 cast - and probs 40 casts per bottle. So I've worked it out to be about 20p for a window section for just the resin.

The annoying part is the silicone for the molds. It's £24 and I've gone through 2 lots to get where I am today. I've jsut ordered some more (delivered today hopefully) coz I'm refining the molds and making some 2 part molds (currently they're open casts - so the details only on 1 side).

So once I've got the 2 part casts sorted, my total running costs are well over £100 - coz I've gone through countless tubes of superglue, no more nails, styrene sheet, foam core... you name it.

I may try to recoup the costs at some point. My passion is for the whole creation side of things, and refining the method - coz I don't really game, I'll probs not have any real use for these once they complete. But I just love doing it

But it's nice to see that you guys are liking my work - that's the main reason for me posting here. Just to get feedback to see if I'm on the right track. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and who best to come to for advice, than the community!!

I'll have more pics tonite hopefully - started to paint it last night, but I'll defo be doing ones with more detail.

Plus I made a start on the tower, so I'll get pics of that on there aswell, and some closeups of the unpainted casts.

    Re: Gothic Resin Terrain

Got a bit more painting done on this, and as promised, some more pics.

I'm still going on the painting, and I think I've over cooked the dark powder on the base, but I think it'll be easy enough to pull back. Also the flash brings it out a little more than how it looks in real life.

For the 2 blank sections either side of the door, I'm going to insert some long banners, and get some color on the model. The interior has only been base coated, but the exterior is pretty much how I wanted it.

    As always comments/suggestions much appreciated

If it's for a 40k table you need some propaganda posters.

    Pretty nice terrain here mate

I think you could add more colours and details to make the final effect less "plain", the propaganda poster would be some great details and those are easy to make.

    Keep the good work!

    Re: Gothic Resin Terrain

ok cool - it defo needs more color on there - propaganda posters sound like a good idea, there's loads of room on there.

Gonna be finishing this off tonite, so there should be more pics coming. Any links to any inspiration for propaganda posters?

I'm thinking the eBay idea is looking more inviting tbh. After doing this building, it's given me loads of ideas for future variants.

    Re: Gothic Resin Terrain

    Found some here... http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138549

I'm thinking some posters on the sections either side of the door, and putting the banners on poles at 90deg's, rather than flat on the walls. Maybe other posters, on some of the walls and the inside. Not going to over do it, but just enough to get the color on it.

Was also thinking about adding something mechanical on there, like a generator or something - again to make it fit into 40k a little more. Altho I guess this would also be ok for Warhammer aswell, like a Chaos themed ruin or something.

    Re: Gothic Resin Terrain

I've used those posters on quite a few of my buildings and they look great.

I don't think the dark areas look overdone - they look good to me.

    Re: Gothic Resin Terrain

    Few updates...

I've added the banners, but my printers fell out with me at the min, so not had chance to print the posters - but they're going on there.

Thought I'd also post my banner making method, plus some pics of some new master models I've done, and more molds.

Started by ripping some strips of paper, I actually used an old credit card bill coz the paper's fairly thick.

Then mixing some No-more Nails with water, I soaked the strips for a few mins, making them quite soggy. I then positioned the banner, so it looked like it was blowing in the wind, and left it to dry

With the 2nd one, I draped it over the model. As the flag pole was attached to a now demolished piece of wall, the flag will have fallen with the wall. Once the other one had dried, I attached it to the wall with some plasticard rod, and stuck the bottom part of the flag to the model, to make it more sturdy...

...then left it to dry over night. The end product is rubbery hard, which is perfect as it's durable, and not brittle. Plus the paint goes on really well.
