Thread: Horus Heresy authors deserve a smaking.

Angry Horus Heresy authors deserve a smaking.

I have noticed a big failing in the HH books. They use Throne as an exclamation but only Dorn knows about it if anybody! It was the Emperor's secret project when he was trying to penertrate the webway, but also contained the power to sustain life so... Naughty Dan Abnett...

Perhaps they are alluding to a throne that a king would literally sit on. Not the "Golden Throne" specifically.

There are 800 things it could mean. It's not necessarily a literal curse using the Golden Throne as its base. People swear with "By the King" and "Throne of God" and so on, in various sci-fi and fantasy settings.

It's just an imperial curse based on the fact empires have rulers, and rulers have thrones - both literal and societal.

I've never for a minute assumed they were specifically referring to the Golden Throne, because that would make no sense at all, and plenty of other reasons do.

The mentioning of the Throne is the fact of Terra being his base of power and there for his Throne is one Terra. It has no connection to his secret project but to the place where he ruled from. By 'The Emperors Throne' also is a way of injecting a line that if it was purely adult book would of been a swear word.

You may be wrong about the throne but the authors do need a good smacking, the HH books are terrible.

SOME are ok, the details are just inconsistent as they are written by different people

Well the HH books aren't the worst thing to come out of BL. They should have given certain areas and events to one author and not three.

I've enjoyed one or two, but aren't the Horus Heresy novels regarded as some of the best to be produced by BL? They were at one point...

I'm much more concerned about the air punching in Fulgrim then "by the Throne!" I mean, are the Primarchs the sons of the immortal God-Emperor of Mankind, engineered to near perfection down to the cellular level, embodied with all of our most noble strength and tragic failings or are they a bunch of frat boys, aping around the galactic stage like pro-wrestlers, flexing to show off their bods and punching the air every time one of their buddies does something totally awesome?

Horus: So, F-dog, how was your weekend?
Fulgrim: I was totally at this kegger on Laer IV, bro.
    Horus: Righteous.
Fulgrim: Yeah, dog. I totally did this keg stand with Trevor, I emptied out the whole thing. Then, I got with one of those freaky Laer chicks. Crazy, bro.
Horus punched the air in excitement.
    Horus: Awesome, bro! AWESOME!

I was under that impression, even though I have absolutely no interest in reading any of them (even proto-Space Marines are too much Space Marine for me).

I would definitely have thought the same as the OP in this situation. 'Throne' as a curse or oath is all over 40k, and it's implicitly about the Golden Throne. I would certainly read this as a mistake on an author's part; similar to Mel Gibson's William Wallace wearing woad (hundreds of years after it was used) and a kilt (hundreds of years before they were invented).

I frankly wouldn't be surprised if at some point Commissar Yarrick is mentioned.

Theres another one in one of the first 3 HH books (cant remember which). One of the artists or scholars or whatever says something along the lines of "Drier than tallarn sandals". Now tallarn at the time was a beautiful paradise world, it was only during the heresy that tallarn got virus bombed to desertness.

Frat boys (I am one so I'll be a little defensive sorry) did not invent fist pumping. It has been around for a quite a long time as a cheer or chant, just something to keep the beat while chanting. "Chug" or "Freshman" is just an easy thing to chant while fist pumping.

Also I completely with the "Throne" swear. In the middle of the Thousand Sons I first noticed it and was quite unhappy that a traitor legion that would never care about the throne in the future is dropping that as a bad thing.

Yeah, the point after someone who wasn't Dan Abnett or Graham McNeil started writing them.

See, I haven't liked them since the first one and I always got crap for it. Now everyone is trying to jump on my bandwagon.

There are lots of inconsistencies throughout and, without Word of God (the author himself explaining them to you) they seem more like lack of forethought than they do intentional or as something that is meant to have different meaning. Dan using 'Throne' as a swear word is right up there with Randall using [an offensive, racist term that I don't feel like posting just in case even though it isn't offensive] in Clerks 2. Yeah, Dan and Randall both know what they mean and don't see anything wrong with it, but everyone else begs to differ.

Throne, in the real world is used in the same manner as the word crown. As in, "That is property of the crown" or "It is the crowns desire..." or "For the crown!" etc. etc. Throne is less commonly used than crown, but still used nonetheless.

Stop assuming that it is LITERALLY the throne, and start assuming it refers to the government as a whole.

Alternately, 40k hobbyists are a fickle bunch. After all, Abnett was originally slated for his writing and now remains the "poster boy" for BL. Go figure.
