Avon one-six Gravchute Regiment, the Red Daemons

For a while I have been working on my Gravchute regiment, modelled off of British Paratroopers, with inspiration from the Special Air Service too.

The 16th Regiment is a regiment of Veterans, each man hand-picked from other Avonian Regiments, and put through a rigorous selection process. Picking out the best soldiers, with the most promising officers selected from the best academy on Avon. Because of this process the Regiment is small compared to most other Guard Regiments, consisting of 4 Battalions, each of 5 Companies. Each Company is broken down into 3 Platoons, each of three squads.

Also unlike many Guard Regiments, the Avon one-six is occasionally broken up and sent to various different warzones, sometimes single Companies are even sent, distributing their specialized skills and abilities where they are needed. Because of this, engineer and support personnel are attached at Company level rather than at Regiment or Battalion. A Company of Sentinels are also attached at Battalion level to provide extra heavy weapons to the Regiment on their drops, as a Gravchute regiment, that one-six has no Heavy Armour of its own and relies on man-portable Heavy Weapons and Imperial Navy support.

A group shot of what I have fully painted, unfortunately I made the terrible mistake of forgetting to base before undercoating which means I'm going to have some difficulty when I come round to trying to paint the bases.

Some of them have since had sand added to their bases today, and I'll get round to painting them at some point, maybe try and cover their feet and legs and spray, maybe just have to go for painting Black.

A pair of Regimental Advisors, one from the Avon 40th Artillery Regiment, the other from the Imperial Navy, as the One-six doesn't have it's own armour it relies heavily on both Artillery and the Navy for support.

Members of Colonel Kavangh, commanding officer of the one-six's, personal command group, the Regimental banner bearer and his vox officer. Wearing standard Desert Camoflage.

I may try and make it look more like British Desert DPM in the future, but I think I'm happy with them, don't wanna clutter them too much.

As you can see, Nick is quite tall.

I apologize for how dark some of the pictures are, I don't have a light box or anything and probably picked a bad place to take the pictures anyway with the window behind them.

I'm happy with most of them, but having seen the pictures I realize how untidy some of the models are. I'm particularly unhappy with the medic, his arms where I've shaved off the shoulder pads are ugly and misshapen

It looks like Cadians? With different heads I think. Maybe FW respirator heads, or maybe Elysian heads?

Would like to know personally because it makes for a great look!

Cadian bodies, most of my troops have the shoulder pads trimmed off. Most of them have beret heads, Veterans have various heads, and most of them have shoulder pads still on (to denote carapace should I wish to use it.) There guns are FW Elysian guns and the Vets shown above have Valkyrie pilot heads.

Are you going to post any close up pictures? They look great from a distance, but would like to see up close too!

    Short update

Have spent most of the time I should be doing working on my guard playing MW2, I've apparently got back in to playing it. I plan to copy up the background for my regiment and the system they're from from my notebook to my computer at some point.

Still need to do his base too, will get round to that at some point. Looking at the picture from the front too I'm not happy with the shading on the front of his uniform.

And a Macharius scratchbuild I decided to work on for the Avon 20th, the Veteran Tank Regiment. Turret + turret mount, intended to make the turret pivot, except I made the hole too big so it will just get glued on. Shame.

Re: Avon one-six Gravchute Regiment, the Red Daemons

So I spent quite a while away from 40K since I've moved south again. Finally got bored enough to dig out some of my stuff, and build some Chimera's.

I also decided I'm poor and stock Chimera's are for suckers so I present the Avon 52nd Mech Infantry's noble steeds, based on on the Bradley IFV. I wanted to go with the Warrior as they're British themed but the Bradley's probably close enough.

This is them as they were when I started work on them a few weeks ago.

I'm gonna mix in a few standard hull Chimera's too I have two plastic GW kit ones knocking about and a plasticard one under construction. Somewhere.

These will be part of a Mechanized regiment. I've got about 80 guardsman and weapon teams knocking about somewhere too that I'll have to dig out.

Re: Avon one-six Gravchute Regiment, the Red Daemons

And this is them as they were yesterday.

Complete Chimera bodies. The one on the right has rivets, still working on Multilasers for the three that don't have them and detailing up the tracks. When I can be bothered, which may well be never. Tracks are boring, which is why I decided to do them as boxes on the side rather than wheels with tracks around. Which I can also pretend was so they looked more armoured.

Rivets on the Chimera, they're all raised and I think look pretty good. Maybe went a bit overboard though XD

Rear hatch. I realise the door itself is a little... rough.

Front of a (moderately) detailed Chimera. I like the armour plate on the front, still needs a hull mounted weapon too. Just realised that.

The first test one. It occurs to me I should've done the rivets on this one first, what with it being the test one. I'm an idiot.

Re: Avon one-six Gravchute Regiment, the Red Daemons

    Thank you chaps.

Gonna go ahead and throw in a size comparison with a stock GW Chimera (because I have my son around at the moment so progress is a little slow), but I couldn't find its turret, that's annoying.

    With a pair of them.

    From the front.

    Side

My Bradmera's are similar width (under 95 mm's for GW and about 85 for the Bradleys) but quite a bit longer (Just shy of 150mm for the Bradleys and about 120 for the GW)

The heights of the hull are also very similar, (mine at just under 50mm compared with about 45) I couldn't compare with turrets because I couldn't find mine but I'm almost certain the Bradleys is bigger in all dimensions.

Also with the Chimera sitting here in front of me I'm not nearly so worried about the number of rivets.

Would people think this would be acceptable for a regular game?

    Excellant work!
    Reminds me of Tommygun's Bradleys.

Re: Avon one-six Gravchute Regiment, the Red Daemons

    Thank you chaps.

Tommygun's were the ones that made me decide I wanted to do my own APC's, and since my regiment is British army based I wanted to go for Warrior's, but Bradley's are close enough lol. I am of course not as skilled at Tommygun. His stuff is always impressive.

Have spent the last couple of days putting Rhinestones on toy tanks, which can be damaging to ones masculinity. Luckily I know I'm totally butch. Should stick some pictures up I guess. Will go to take them now.

    Edit: OK, pictures:

Group shot of my Bradmera's with rhinestone rivets.

Some closer up views, rivets look OK to me. Makes me sad that the tracks are unfinished though.

Side and rear view. You can see the rear hatch and door and see the top hatch.

Closer up view of rear including hatch and shizzle, relatively happy with this, even if the door is a little rough.

Front view, showing rivets on the underside of the front piece and the reactive armour.

Re: Avon one-six Gravchute Regiment, the Red Daemons

Now because I'm looking into some Challenger II style tanks for use in my tank regiment (The 20th Avon) I dug up and old photo for size comparison between a scale model of a Challenger II versus a (half finished) extended Russ and a Chimera.

The Challenger is obviously way too short so I'm thinking boosting the hull a full centimeter and the turret the same to make it fit better.

A finished hull (minus any detailing whatsoever) of a Macharius. Because they look badass. Also for use in the tank regiment.

Sorry for the blurry photo's, most of them are taken with my phone at the mo.

Re: Avon one-six Gravchute Regiment, the Red Daemons

OK so I haven't been able to actually do any work on any of my stuff (because I don't really know where my infantry models are at the moment, and because having my son around means I have no time to work on the tanks, and I'm trying to avoid the fumes from the plastic glue.)

Most of the fluff I have written up is also on my other computer so I'm going to put up a few bits and pieces of fluff on here to at least make it SEEM like I'm doing some work on this.

An extract from a piece I'm writing called Gods on Olympus (working title) the final battle of which is based around a 16,000 points a side Apocalypse battle.

    16th Avon Bravo Company - 1st platoon

Nikolaus Slater advanced quickly, keeping low, silently, he moved like a shadow, the heavy drip-drop of acidic rain covering any noise he would make. He slid into cover behind a parked car, its hood had been blasted open and was scorched from where a brief fire had raged from the destroyed engine but had since been put out by the rain. His fatigues clung to his skin awkwardly but he ignored it, peering through the vehicles shot-out windows down the dark street. Night had fallen only an hour before and visibility was down to almost zero from the torrential downpour, caused by the massive heretic dropships breaching the atmosphere to drop their heavy vehicles. Nik had seen them coming down and had to admit he was a little worried about what they might contain, they were nearly the size of the Mechanicus' Titan landers. And there had been a lot more. Several of the mighty engines were already operating throughout the outer Hive, defending and counterattacking. So far no enemy engines had been sighted, but that didn't mean they weren't out there.

Without looking back he raised a hand slightly and waved over the rest of his squad. His sensitive hearing could just make out the sound of their rustling boots as they hurriedly advanced along the street behind him, regrouping, they were experts though, spreading out, moving in fire-teams and pairs, covering one another. He didn't feel the need to look behind him to supervise their actions. Nik flexed his firing hand, re-positioning his bullpup lasgun in his grip, reaching up to wipe some of the moisture from his helmet visors faceplate. The unit were wearing hazardous environment drop helmets, containing their own independent air supply they were designed to protect against the worst conditions, to survive and allow the wearer to breath during very high atmosphere grav insertions and for combat in airless environments, they also contained a number of useful electronic additions including night-vision, rudimentary short-range auspex, covert line-of-sight vox units and zoom capabilities. They were a very high-tech piece of equipment, and Nik found them uncomfortable and unwieldy. He glanced over at the FNG who came hurtling across towards him, slamming into the car with a bang and grit his teeth at the man. The boy couldn't have been older than 18 but somehow he'd made it into the regiment, he gave Nik a thumbs up who shook his head despairingly before shifting further along the car.

He motioned to his fire-team to cover and then, glancing once more down the abandoned street, broke cover to trot across to the next piece of cover a few yards ahead, this one a pile of debris of ferrocrete bricks and mortar from the collapsed building to his right. It had taken some kind of orbital strike during one of the preliminary bombardments and there was little of it still standing, just a shell no taller than Nik at its highest. Crawling on his belly Nik advanced through the rubble to the corner that the building had once stood on. He shifted his weight into a more ready stance, still keeping as low as possible and edged his head around it cautiously. No one shot his head off straight away and the road appeared clear, he waited a few moments and just when he was about to edge back and call up his squad a bolt of lightning shot from the sky illuminating the road momentarily, and Nik caught the sight of a shape. It was only for a moment but he recognized the outline of a Rhino armoured vehicle. Deep purple and a glimmer of gold iconography. In the dark and rain is was almost invisible even when he knew what he was looking at, parked about 200 metres ahead, in a small clearing that what might have once been a car park before an Adeptus Arbites station.

Catching his breath he drew back silently and slowly, crawling back through the rubble until he could make out the position he had occupied just before moving up. He couldn't see his squad, they were doing a good job of concealing themselves, but he knew where they were in cover. "We've got company." He whispered into the line-of-sight covert vox unit.

Actually managed to dig out some of my other Veterans tried taking some pictures but due to them already being undercoated and having poor lighting and only my phone camera its being difficult. Basing them at the moment. Also found my milliput and it has REALLY dried out. D=
