    -----------------------

Well, in my other Chaos Log i got the painting fever an the only prescription was to paint Sons of Malice.

My favorite colors are black an white in a checkered scheme(back from my car days in japan) so that an the tidbits of fluff regarding the Sons have had me intrigued for some time.

The other day i figured out what kill team was and decided to make one for the heck of it. Its just one i made up to fill in points an use bitz i never touch. so Sons of Malice Kill team mk1 goes like this:

    6 Chosen 108pts
    champion +10
    heavy bolter +15
    power fist +25
    three meltabombs +15
    Total=173pts
*im playing them as chosen but i want them to look like regular tacticals.

this is my PIP Son. Still trying to make a suitable white but i also want it toned down an dirty as this guy is an infiltrating unit.

This is the second Son i put together. similar pose and everthing, nothing too unique. i was happy that i got the horns from the helm to fit just right, i can even remove the bolter for better access too.

With these poses i want them crouched as though they are trying to keep a low profile...despite their size and colors scheme. basically just imagine spec op teams sneaking through woods or jungles to f up their enemy.

Even though most rounds fired from a bolter leave a mess behind a silencer would at least hide the position of the shooter. so here is a quick idea i had for a silenced bolter *note, that specific bolter doesn't fit in hands very well, the grip is a tad too big.

also, Elazar the Glorifieds World Eater Terminator Gore-Wing sparked up an interest in creating an an all-terminator army. this idea and kill team seem more suitable for me as i dont play much and would prefer to play smaller games.

that it for now, Hope to have some fluff ready by the time i paint that second Son. THanks for stopping by and comments and criticism is always welcomed!

I think you made the same mistake i did with painting white, you didnt water down your paint enough, will be great to see the army complete.

Nice scheme man! They really look infiltrating with those confusing patterns.
    I hope to see more!

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

I suggest you first paint the white areas with a grey foundation, for example Astronomican grey.

Then Mix astronomican grey with white. 1:2
So that the color actually is white with a little touch of grey. Then use pure white for highlights.

    shade recesses with badab black.

that's how i would have painted them.

Nice choice of warband, I though about them for a long time before choosing to make Black Crusade instead (Mix of all, but mostly World Eaters, and Black Legion)

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

    thanks for the comments!

Logan- yeah, i either have the white too watery or its like milk with chunks. so its all choppy but alot better than my first try.

El Aartos- cant take credit for the scheme, i took it from the...3rd ed CSM codex(i think its 3rd). the black is perfect for being sneaky...the white...not so much haha. i was thinking of making the white dark, as it would be fitting for the kill team. basically i would want a color like the Death Monger(5th ed CSM dex). or try to use guaze cloth to make camo netting.

Arselskjut- thats actually what i have tried BUT something isnt working right for me. my main problem was it wasnt going on smoothly. i have some extra marines laying around that i am going to practice on. but thank you for posting that...at least i know i was on the right track.

Right now, because of my crap-tastic painting of white, this is what my kill team will look like:

Here is the 3rd one who will be painted up to the same steps as the oe pictured above.

right now i am not too happy with having 3 guys with the same pose. even though i like the crouched/hunched look having all my boltgun guys like that will be boring. so i am going to have to learn how to repose minis. and thanks to Mega Nutz im well on my way. the first things i do will be subtle but hopefully more unique as i continue!

    and...as promised, some background fluff:

On the field of battle the use of stealth is a deadly dagger with which to cut out your enemy’s throats. With forces that wage war from the shadows, intelligence can be gathered, commence the sabotage of the enemy’s supplies, and execute the assassination of an enemy’s chain of command. Within the Sons of Malice, the forces of the Black Hand kill-teams carry out such missions.

Those ordained within these unofficial special operation teams are veterans of the battlefield drawn in from the ranks of tactical and assault marines on the verge to ascending to the status of an elite.

Stalking prey from out of sight was nothing new to the tribes of Scelus. From young ages the males were trained to hunt and wage war to become warriors or a greater honor, to become one of the Star Gods mighty champions. Many warriors within the Sons of Malice can remember a time when they would prove their ascension into adulthood and become fully accepted members of their tribe. When the sun would fall upon the cold and desolate landscape, packs of male youths would venture into the wilderness armed with small knives and spears and would make their way to the camps of rival tribes. From their rivals they would steal prized possession, kidnap young girls, or in times of tribal warfare, kill any living soul they could find. Returning with rival tribe’s chiefs possessions, daughters, or head was a sign of skill and cunning.

This culture survived by the marines of the chapter who carried it with them. As scouts each warrior was expected to carry out such tasks in the face of danger to further the mission of the Sons of Malice. However, battle-brothers would be drawn in to form cells of the Black Hand to conduct missions of great importance to apply the desired amount of brutality needed.

Even to this day, the Sons of Malice utilize such forces to wage their war of hatred and revenge.

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

dont mean to double post but submitting my current progress.
i did a bit of painting and gave a coat to my ready Son:

its more white in real life so i will have to retake pics an re-post in the near future. dont know why he looks so grey as i used the same method for pic taking. the white looks like the earlier marine but smooth and clean(thanks to not messing up a wash)!

this white was mixing a bit of codex grey(my savior paint color) into some white. sorry i dont have a ratio thing or anything, i may look like a person who knows his numbers but i despise math with extreme prejudice! with this mix i ended up with the color i desired but with the consistency and smoothness of a color that does not come out chalky. *Codex Grey is my savior because it has helped me paint yellow, bleach bone, and several other colors with desirable results.

I just need a nice wash to put on the white to "separate" it from other colors. examples being the trim on the shoulders and the white being next to each other like on the right arm around the elbow. then try to highlight the black as that is a weak point of mine.

this guy still needs some touch up an other things to be painted so hopefully he will be done tonight while i start work on another one of his Brothers.

    Thanks for stopping by!

Some promising look poses there Hushrong! Looking forward to the group shot!!

Like the look of the silenced bolter, perhaps a scope for that team marksman look!!

I like the Sons of Malice, not something you see a lot around here. I agree that silence bolter looks ace.

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

Have you tried to prime the model in grey?

Army painter : unifrom grey for example

From there I would wash the modell with badab black, concentrating on the recesses, such as; between fingers, beside shouldpad edges etc.
Making the lines really dark, so that it gives some contrast which is nice.

Then follow up by mixing the astronomican-white directly and applying alot of water to stretch out the color so that it gets a smooth surface, on the chosen areas. After that highlight and then paint the black areas using painting tape to get straight lines.

Remember to push the grey-white so that the badabblack shadows are reduced to thin lines.

Hight light the black areas using extreme highlightning (codexgrey/fortressgrey in thin lines)

Red eyes would I prefer for the contrast to Black and white.

    Aiming for this look:

Clean white-ish without fade and distinct edges to the metal edges of the armour.

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

Thanks for the comments guys and/or gals!

@Mega Nutz: I hope to get the kill team members looking very unique. this is my "mk1" team but hopefully when i start the "mk2" team they will have better poses and have more character to them. and thanks to your Black Legion i've got something to aspire to.

im also happy the bolter is like-able even though its just a bit of sprue glued to a bolter whose barrel i removed. I want to make a bullpup bolter that i saw on B&C that is silenced with a scope. It'll be like an SVU.

@Arselskjust: Thanks for the guide. Hopefully i can increase my painting skills to use it. I also want to use spray but have yet to do so. when i lived in Okinawa it was always humid because it was a tropical island, and i didnt know much about paint, so when i used tamiya spray it was just awful so i have refrained from using sprays. hopefully though i can produce some SoM similar to the one you posted a link to.

I also want to go with blue eyes after looking at this bit of SoM artwork someone had on deviantart(its not accesible now i think sadly). it has a look to it that i just really like.

and here are some pics to balance out all those words.

I forgot to post this guy earlier. my first attempt at properly re-positioning a marine and its a small change but i like how the bolter isnt pointed in the air anymore.

Here is this marine with more paint slapped on him. besides trying to finish him i am going to build my newly arrived Termie Lord.

and for fun, this pic. Its a gundam marker and a tool i used for a decade when i lived in Okinawa building and painting gundams. This thing has made me lazy and unused to a brush.

i found the best way to paint horns was the base coat snakebite lether and paint lines up connecting at the tip by adding skull white, your looking at about 7/8 different colors in total and then skull white at the very tip. I would put a grey wash over the white (heavily watered down.

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

    thanks for the comments gentlemen!

@Logan: I'm going to give it a try. flesh, horns, hair, etc are some of my weak points that need brushing up. (*is that a pun?) failing that horns will be painted metallic until my skills increase.

@Mega Nutz: I got your pm and thanks! I really want to put it to use. i have also been looking up different patterns people made of bolters as well to add some uniqueness to my mk2 teams. i may have to go bitz-hunting for some of those parts in the near future.

and i hate posting without a pic...so here is something i think people will enjoy.

the start of my Terminator Army.

Hister A'dol. i dont have a good title for him yet but he will be my Logan Grimnar count-as.

What should i do about the power cable, handle, and axe head piece in regards to colors? i think if i paint the face thing on the axe red and the handle brown that it will look good. any suggestions?

this will be covered by a cloak. i may try to copy the look of the front tabbard with the blackish-grey colors for the cloak.

My favorite part, the damaged shoulder pad of the inquisition. It seems fitting as an inquisitor was the reason that the Sons went renegade and now they will suffer for it.

i just got some b-day money...so he will get a five man squad added to him this week. nothing like extra cash to supply my addiction... errr, hobby instead of on bills or gas. *scratch neck.

thanks for stopping by an taking a look!

    Yay first terminator!
Do you have WD359? It has the 'Eavy Metal Masterclass for painting Kor'sarro Khan in and could probably give some great tips for helping with the white on your Sons of Malice.
Also do you use a wet palette as they're dead easy to make and will really help with your painting especially when it comes to mixing and thinning colours out.
Hister A'dol's base looks like it'll be suitably epic and it's a nice touch to add the inquisitorial shoulder pad.

I like the lord Hush! He really starts to look cool and I also like the fluffy part on the base.
Keep painting him 'till he's finished! =p

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

    thanks for the comments guys.

@Elazar: unfortunately i do not have that copy but i think i will stalk around for one. and i am going to have to look up "wet palette" as i am not that knowledgable as a painter. for mixing i use the plastic covers from the blisters.

I added some paint to the cloak an attached it to Hister.

after his cloak it will be time to work on his weapons.

then using left over bitz from the lord and a loyalist termie i made this guy. i think i will run him as a Wolf Guard Leader, a regular Wolf Guard, or a Lone Wolf rule wise. i will have to take another gander at the SW codex. He was going to be a sorcerer but i removed the arms an gave him the claws.

"I **** you not, the fish i caught was really this big you guys!"

im picking up a box of termies today and some sand so i can work on bases. thanks for stopping by!

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

I did a tutorial on making a wet palette on my blog here. Might be an invaluable tool for you as white usually means lots of in between greys and usually lots of thinning of paints to paint multiple layers. It made the world of difference to my painting when I stared using one so hope it can be of help to you too!

Love the fishing story pose on the Battle Leader and a nice use of bits to make him!

    Re: Hush's Sons of Malice

thanks once again for the comments guys!

@Elazar: i am going to have to give that wet palette a try because when i work with white the paint dries up quick!

@Momus: i may paint a biker for the heck of it in the SoM scheme, that or a land raider way down the road.

@Logan: i definitely will take up your advice whenever i can!

I got a box of CSM termies last week and went to work on them. Havent done much but put them together. I need to do some GS work in gaps around the arm and figure out what i want on their bases. so at the moment here they are:

This is the Demi-Squad. I have decided to have 10 termies(wolf guard) plus a leader(WG battle leader) to make a squad of 11. Nothing like Numerically following a god.

    an my list so far:

    Lord Hister A’dol (Logan Grimnar) +275pts (275pts)
    Nostras(Wolf Guard Leader) +70 (130pts)
Terminator Armor +40pts, SB to Wolf Claw +15pts, PW to Wolf Claw +5pts
    Khanah(Wolf Guard) +18pts (43pts)
Terminator Armor +15pts, PW to Power Fist +10pts
    Pat’onh(Wolf Guard) +18pts (48pts)
Terminator Armor +15pts, SB for Combi-Melta +5pts, PW to Power Fist +10pts
    Bradlei(Wolf Guard) +18pts (48pts)
Terminator Armor +15pts, PW for Chainfist +15pts
    Menga’la(Wolf Guard) +18pts (73pts)
Terminator Armor +15pts, SB for A.Cannon +30pts, PW to Power Fist +10pts
    Roh’mal(Wolf Guard) +18pts (48pts)
Terminator Armor +15pts, PW to Chainfist +15pts.
    Total= 623pts

*all of these names derive from famous people in the past. all but two listed share one common time frame. think you can guess them all?

I also think i did the math right for these guys. if so i love how 7 minis make up 600+ points. Anyways, if i get time tonight i hope to GS in their gaps or work on and finish Hister.

    Thanks for stopping by everyone!
