Thread: Green is Mean !

    Green is Mean !

I've been playing Dawn of War 1 again (Flash Gitz yey !) and suddenly I was hit in the head by a holy message from Gork (or Mork). I'm gonna do Orks ! I talked with my mates, sneaked into threads published by the likes of Glenning and Synapse, did lots of background reading in books old and new and I have decided. It's gonna be Bad Moonz !

The idea is to go DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA. Lots and lots of shooty, to make the Orkses real happy with their dakka powa, blasting away for the sheer noise of it, hardly hitting anything.

I've just ordered the army and roughly it will be:

    Warboss in Mega Armour
    5x Meganobz
    2 x 10 Lootas
    1x 10 Tankbustas
    3x 20 Shoota Boyz
    1x 6 Warbikes
    1x 3 Deff Koptas
    1x 3 Buggies
    1x 3 Killa Kanz
    1x Deff Dredd
    1x 6 Flash Gitz

In my feavered brain this should make these Orks ded shooty ! It also gives me 4 strong troop units and I think a nice balance across the force without growing a beard. Just the thing I was going for. All models to be made in plastic since I dont like the metals much. I just wonder if I will be courageous and convert my own mega armour or wimp out and buy metal ones . But that is to be decided near the end.

For now, the first try out model. The multipart plastics will get much more armour plating so I get to paint more yellow.

Maelstrom has delivered the Ork Army and after gawking at the sprues I put together a few Boyz. I think I'm gonna be painting em in fives to get speed and detail in. They are gritty and the picture unfortunately doesn't do the skin justice. Barrels to be drilled out and bases to be done properly. My mind is whirling with the amount of bitz I just got hehe.

    Looking good matey.
I still think they could use a shade od yellow which is a tad brighter.
And I agree on the skin, in RL it looks a lot better.

    'Ere we go !

After the first batch, I stuck together some of the walkers. I ordered the whole army in one go so I could mix and match the bitz a little to help my lazy conversion skillz Exhausts to be greenstuffed and drilled out. I like the Botz to be simple and sturdy without too many fingz sticking out. I contemplated an Ork pilot sticking out of the Dredd but I think it ruins the model as it is now unfortunately.

    Jeez !

I've never constructed an army in such a messy way before. Eager to cross-use bits of the plastic Ork kitz and to make my own brand of Lootaz, I've been sticking models together left right and centre. I guess it fits with Orky chaotic nature. I'm quite happy I've got a definite army plan that's cemented in my head or this would turn out to be a disaster . Anyway, I am cobbling em together and will neaten them up when they are all done with some white rod and plasticard. Her some examples of the random things I'm doing

The current idea is to give Loota's "dakka" and Flash Gitz "zaaaaaap" as I am figuring "zaaaappp" is more expensive

    Re: Green is Mean !

    Looking good there.
    A few pointers:
1- those three to the right are loota's and the two left are tankbusta's? I'd add more gubbinz to the loota's to make them even more noticable. Now they could also be 'eavy shoota's. Maybe use some Tau gunz too? those do wonders on weird Ork-gunz
2 - i don't like the Taugun on the biker, if you want to do it like that i needs many, many more bits. Now its just a pastejob...
3- Love the start of the Buggy, the Orkyness of it is completely awesome!

    All IMHO off-course

    Re: Green is Mean !

I've been sticking more Orks together then is good for me ! Preliminary work on the Flash Gitz has been done. I've not gone for the pirate look but more for the bad-ass Nob with an energy kannon look. But more of them later. For now I've painted the next five boyz. I've tried to use the feedback I've been receiving and did two things: Firstly, The yellow is more...uhm...yellow and bright. Secondly, I've started with squad markings. If you check the Ork Codex you will see this squad will be the "Bad" Boyz as indicated by the glyph I've been painting on their armour.

What do you think about the yellow peeps?
Old Yellow is left, New Yellow is right

    Re: Green is Mean !

Looking great, but theres one or two things I could suggest. It may be your pics, your camera, your lighting, or something, but it looks like you're using a gloss varnish on the models. because of the skintones, leathers, etc, they tend to look considerably better with matte.
I have to echo OnnO, you're going to find it difficult to convince folks those two lootas are, in fact, lootas and not tankbustaz. They appear to be just that.
and you might want to drill out those barrels they look out of place.

If you ask me the second yellow looks much better, much more..bright and glaring, which is the way Bad Moonz are supposed to be.

Otherwise, great paintjobs, very clean, and sharp!

Remind me again, why does this thread only have 3 stars? I love the skin tone on your models, and I can tell you that if you got better pics, they would look even better. Try reading the is tutorial on photography, it really helps! http://www.grahamgilchrist.com/miniphotoguide.html

    Re: Green is Mean !

I like the effect of old yellow... it's awesome, and with different skin tone I'd go with that one; however, because your boyz have reasonably bright skin tone the new yellow dulls it down a bit and fits the model much better.

    Nice work.

    Re: Green is Mean !

I like both! but my yellow at my Bad Moonz is more like the old so i think i like ye 'old' much more...

You've made the killakans look nasty! the middlest leaning is fantastic! But those arms should be fixed in position like: shooting, aiming, ready to chop, etc. and the conversion looks great too. I love your buggies, i got an idea of them...

    Cheers, oh and Great work!

    Re: Green is Mean !

Thanx for all the feedback. It seems that currently people are quite equally divieded between dark yellow and light yellow. I guess finishing some bases will determine which wins out. Myself? I am leaning towards dark because light yellow might look horrid on vehicles that could look like a bunch of lemons when done.

    Re: Green is Mean !

No reason you couldn't mix it up between dark and bright, even on the same model. The boyz would always be painting from whatever Yellow pigments they could scrounge / mix up, so slight variations would be nicely Orky

That's just... like... your opinion, man.

As a definite test to the brighter yellow I've painted a Killer Kan yesterday. It was a weird process with the yellow technique on such large surfaces. I think it turned out nice. Cabling needs some work and highlights.
