    Historical Rules

In a similar style to the Historical Figures list would people care to contribute to this thread for rules? - see quite a few posts asking for them, would be nice to have a comprehensive list. To start:

Various Resources and free downloads - Other games listed with a * are also free to download.

    http://boardgamegeek.com Useful for reviews
http://www.freewargamesrules.co.uk/ Not all links work but all games are free to download
    http://www.jimwallman.org.uk/wargame/
http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/captain.html free system for variety of eras with varient rules available

Days of Knights (medieval) - http://www.sabersedge.com/chipco/

    Musket Era

    20th Century

*Canvas Eagles (WWI aerial) - http://www.eaglesmax.com/ (download PDF rules!)

Scale note: I didn't include scale because most of them can be played at whatever scale you prefer. Some, like They Died for Glory and Fire & Fury are more suited to smaller scale figures (15/10/6mm.)

Ambush Alley/ Force on Force for small scale modern insurgency and large scale modern/cold war/ww2 games, respectively. Probably one of the most enjoyable rulesets I have ever seen.

I humbly suggest an asterisk next to the entry to denote whether it is a free download.

Good call. I put one at the front of the entry for the one set of free rules in my reply above.

    Re: Historical Rules

Threasurection, i'll leave it to Codsticker to decide if this is worth a sticky - have made a start and will edit in the stuff from the Historical Rulesets thread and anything else people want to contribute here.

Do we need more detail in the descriptions?

    Re: Historical Rules

This falls between the ancient and musket categories:

Maximilian! - (Early Renaissance) Similar to the DBx games, but built specifically for the Italian Wars period - http://www.blackhat.co.uk/online_sho...521d41346af81c

    More, I guess musket era:

Age of Gunpowder - (Early Renaissance) - http://www.sabersedge.com/chipco/aog.htm

Warhammer English Civil War - http://www.warhammer-historical.com/...Civil_War.html

Not a huge fan, but they deserve mention for being a workable set (and the creators make really nice campaign books):

    Re: Historical Rules

Hmmm... am considering re-oprganising the list so that it is more in line with the Historical Figures list in that we don't end up with multiple entries for the same manufacturer (ie, Warhammer Historicals).

    Re: Historical Rules

sure Codsticker edit away, whatever seems the best format. Most of the questions that pop up on here seem to be from ppl competely new to historicals with a period in mind but unusure of what's available, hence sticking em together in broad categories.

Well, the problem is that Warhammer Historicals (and other companies) do make rules for different periods. I don't think duplication of manufacturers is a problem.

If I go to a list and I am looking for Pirate rules, I wouldn't think to look in the Ancients category because some company makes rules for both periods. How would you file WH? Under Ancients for WAB? Or Muskets for Legends of the High Seas?

Furthermore, some companies may make different games of different qualities or scales as well.

We're talking about rulesets, not manufacturers.

I would use a similar format as for the Historical Figures thread. Warhammer Historicals is a unique creature in that it has a wide range of publications covering many periods and different locales. Most publshers publish rules for a period or two and many do not have supplemental books. For example:

Warlord Games publish a set of rules for the Horse and musket period (1700-1900) for 25mm called Black Powder.
    Black Powder

Osprey Publishing produce rules and supplements for Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance tabletop warfare that can be used with 15mm and 25mm models.
    Field of Glory

GHQ sell their own rule books for the models they manufacture- 1/285 "micro-armour". They have separate rule sets for WW2 and the Vietnam War/modern era.
    GHQ Rules
    etc,
