Wishing for Chaos (a journey into magic and mayhem)

I've been browsing through some of the great project logs on this forum for the last few days and finding lots of great inspiration. As such, it feels only natural to start a log of my own, to try and catalogue my work on building a wild & varied collection of painted Chaos models for 40k.

To preface, this isn't really going to be an army project in the conventional sense - the "army" is not intended to match any codex, but rather be based on the kind of models I personally think would look cool in a Chaos army. It's going to consist of both chaos marines, chaos human renegades, and daemons. The main factions represented will be Khorne and Tzeentch, with a small handful of Alpha Legion marines to break up the red/blue monotony.

Some of the models I've posed here before in different places, but I figured it would be cool to have everything together in one thread. I'll start by posting pictures of some of the stuff I've already painted, and add pictures as I get new stuff done - hopefully that will serve as a fun incentive to work harder.

Ok, on to the pictures. Starting with Tzeentch, here is a Sorcerer (with some scavenged marine gear), a group of Thrall Wizards, some daemons, and a forgeworld Thousand Sons dread.

For Khorne, I haven't got as much - just an undead champion, and a group of marines.

Coming up (relatively) soon should be a Khornate marine standard bearer, groups of Khornate cultists, a Tzeentchian daemon engine robot thing, and the Alpha Legion marines I really look forward to painting!

Nice conversions. I like the dark and dirty look.

Nice stuff so far. I like the use of the other models, not the norm. Really like the TS cultists! The TS are a little darker and greener than usual, but look good. The WE's are spot on, dark grimy look

Cheers! The Khorne marines are the models I'm happiest with, especially the one to the centre right.

Along the same vein, here are the first of my non-marine Khorne followers, who are essentially just marauders with a bit of decoration. Pardon the bad lighting and straightforward paintjobs, the idea is for them to look good in swarms.

Re: Wishing for Chaos (a journey into magic and mayhem)

I figured it wouldn't hurt to post some WIP models, so here is a couple of models still being worked on.
First is a mutant chaos warrior type of guy - I managed to end up with a bunch of chaos warriors by sorta accident, and figured they would look interesting in a 40k daemon world context. The head is intended to look like an elephant man style mask with a sci-fi breathing tube attachment, to make the model look a bit less fantasy and more 40k. I'm not too happy about the capes, but I can't think of a way to get rid of them entirely without having to rebuild the whole back.
The second pic is of a daemon prince, based on a weird blobby shape of expandable foam I found and added some putty to. I hope it will look interesting and horrific.

Great models so far - I particularly like the dark and grimey look you have given the khorne berserkers and non-marine khorne followers.

Overall pretty awesome, I'll wait eagerly for more.

Cheers! Here is a shot of another small group of Khorne marines, this time of a slightly older generation. Picture taken in daylight this time, sorry for the varying photo quality...

(Edit because picture has been lost somehow...)

These are great models! Very individual. I love the khorne champion, the sorcerer and his thralls. Those daemons are great! How did you make them?

Nice painting and the army is really different which I like.

Its nice to know Im not the only one who thinks Flagellents mixed with Chaos marines make for cool models.

Cheers! The daemons are just sculpted from fimo, the wonderful german modeling putty. Here is a pic of one without paint next to my test model.

Just managed to base up my old Khornate Dread, so here it is in all its heavy metal glory. (It looks a bit brighter in real life.)

Oh man, I'm in love with those daemons, they are like tiny tzeentchian chicken horrors, awesome! The dirty rawness of that first berzerker picture looks really nice too. subscribing to this thread.

Very nice work man! Your painting scheme is really dirty and dark, I like it a lot! The little daemons are also very nice, they look quite easy when unpainted but when painted they look very good.
    Keep it up man!

Re: Wishing for Chaos (a journey into magic and mayhem)

Thanks! I'm actually getting a bit embarrassed about the daemons now, because they are so crudely sculpted. I think my sculpting skills are improving a bit, so I hope I can make any future ones a bit cooler-looking.

To that end, here is a shot of a new horror I just started on yesterday, next to the big brother daemon and a chaos marine size comparison guy.

I'll take that as a compliment! I did a little more work on the small daemon, and while not exactly beautiful, I still think he's better than my previous ones.

This is some really cool stuff, I'm getting a real late 2nd-early 3rd edition feeling from this army, which I really love.

Re: Wishing for Chaos (a journey into magic and mayhem)

Cheers! In a fit of inspiration I started working on another Khornate champion too, based on a very old school model. I kinda see this guy as a Khorne sorcerer as described in the old Realm of Chaos books, where a sorcerer could be a Khorne champion, he just couldn't use any magic himself and would just concentrate on dispelling/nullifying the magic of others. For some reason I named him Quresh.

Nice Khorne champ man! Really good pose and where is his body from?

Re: Wishing for Chaos (a journey into magic and mayhem)

The body is from the Chaos Sorcerer model from the old Heroquest game, the one with a barbarian, elf, dwarf and wizard adventuring in a rectangular dungeon. Funnily enough, the head of that sorcerer is the same head I used on the Khorne champion with the wavy sword I posted earlier - though not from the same actual model.
