I used a scroll saw.... though a band saw would work well too. You could try a jugsaw but I find they are hard to control and things tend to break when you cut small or sharp. For hand tools, the best choice would be a coping saw but it would be VERY slow going ibn MDF.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Unrepentant Terrain-aholic

In answer to some of the questions about materials and methods, here are some WIP pics from the next batch of DE terrain. After the lessons learned from the first go 'round, this set is coming together rather quickly. I hope to have them done this weekend.

Here are some of the materials used to design the components. The various coins and other round objects are for creating those smooth curvey shapes. I draw the designs on thin cardboard (cereal box or comic backer board thickness) to create a template. Scissors and a SHARP knife are a must to get things cut out. The glus stick is to temporarily attach the template to the MDF so the design is consistent.

More tools and materials for construction/detailing... glue gun, paver sand, wall filler/spackle, dremel with sanding attatchment, palm sander, and white glue.

A set of 4 barricades/obstacles plus some objective markers.

    2 towers.

    A barracks/building/storehouse.

A landing pad for your raiders and ravagers!

    Enjoy!

I really like your Dark Eldar Building, very nice style. Perhaps you could go with a more webway / portals?

I have sketched up a portal design but am not happy with it yet. When I get done with some ork buildings for this weekend I'll see what I can come up with. Stay tuned here for WIP pics.

If you've still got your Ork fortress, one thing you might consider is an extra wall piece or two.

I'd built something on a similar vein a while back and discovered that you multiply the uses with at least one extra segment. Mainly because it lets you have a three long center with walls heading back. And when you have two extra ones you can lengthen the sides.

That piece went to a client a little while back. I understand what you mean though. When I get around to doing another fortress I know it will get a couple extra segments and a telly-porta. Also, I want to make a larger gate that the stompas can walk through. That probobly means no catwalk though. We'll see.

    Re: Unrepentant Terrain-aholic

So I haven't done too much terrain of late. I have been building a HUGE Chaos Daemon army for a gentleman in Tampa. Now that that project is done, I thought that I would turn some attention back to my beloved Orks. Look for some new Orky "arkitekchur" in the coming weeks. In the mean time, I do have one newer piece for you folks to comment on... my Ork Mek Garage (wife sez that it's a barn). Enjoy!

    Re: Unrepentant Terrain-aholic

No plan seems to survive contact with the enemy. I'm putting together some Tyranid terrain for a table at a local shop. What they want is some "man-height" hills with brood nest features. Also, because the table is supposed to represent the inside of a tryranid hive ship, he wants some large organic sacks that that large tyranids would grow in and hatch from. This won't take long as I have done some similar pieces in the past.

Here are some pics of the hills underway...

I'll be matching the table for the most part. Fleshy pinks and meaty reds with some resin ooze in a milky green for accent.

Paint is this weekend so keep an eye out.

Here are the "pod" pieces for the store's tyranid table. The even grey coloring comes from using GW spray texture as a first primer. It helps blend some details together and will help keep the broad smooth surfaces from looking inorganic. Resin effects will be added after primary painting is complete.

    Giant egg cluster...

    Large egg cluster...

    Small egg cluster...

    Hatched egg cluster...

    Comments and critiques welcome.

Here are some pics of the Tyranid terrain while some of the early paint is done. Still no resin or detailing done. Hope to be done PDQ.

Some great terrain here; love the Ork buildings! The Tyranid spore eggs are also shaping up very nicely, eager to see how they'll turn out. Keep it up!

I really like the blade things you made for your DE terrain. I'm definitely pinching that for my arcane fulcrums. Great work!
