Aaaahhh, useful idea, that. One more step on the way to modelling enlightenment.

Panhead, the base idea. I may have to steal it.

It's not stealing if i encourage it!

I'll be doing one for an infantry sized base to show some of the stuff i do for them. I should really show my space marine's bases.

Step 4&5 will be up at the same time. then I'll be doing a painting tutorial.

Re: Tau - a break from guard

alright, I have what i need to do for the month. A lot of work ahead of me.

need to do my three suits, three pathfinders, paint the bases (and fatigues pending) of all 7. I need to finish the baseing tutorial, and I need to paint my test kroot. (future plans, doubt they'll be in my army, maybe a merc army... hmmmm)

hopefully i can finish the base tut. this weekend, including the painting of part.

in an unrelated note, I ripped the shoulder pads off of al 15 of my terminators! yay! problem is, I also took off a few arms with them... and i'm out of glue...

    cheers

Sweet Tau! They still look a bit sissy compared to your Guard though, lol.

Re: Tau - a break from guard

argh! I keep being slow and non-productive! but no-more!!!

today, I've finished the base grey on the first crisis:

Next, I'll be doing the Black Camo. Then the lenses. Just like my Infantry

and... done the base grey on one pathfinder:

also, installment #4 of my base tutorial, Add Sand:

(do not fear, I'll be putting the tutorial together in due time, but first, I need to finish it!

PS. pictures suck, but it's nothing you haven't seen before

    Update: now 100% better pictures!

finished the camo on the crisis suit, and did the weathering, I need to clean up a ton, but I'm happy with how it looks, opinions?

also, (no picture) I finished the grey basecoat on a second pathfinder, and did their lenses. One more, then camo for the three, and I can base the squad!

Re: Tau - a break from guard

well, that was quick: all my pathfinders are done. Now they just need bases.

    Huzzah!

I think to add some colour/differentiation, I'll be weathering the cloth. Not the armour, that's only for large suits/vehicles.

*edit* the pic is bad, but alas, no tripod!

What Tau? I can't see them!
<puts on best Robin Williams-esque flamboyant voice from 'Good Morning Vietnam'>
Why are they wearing camoflage? They go into the city and no one can see them!

    Silly xenos.

Woot! Finished the Construction part of the basing tutorial! the paint steps will come once I've started the Pathfinders.

1: get a base, And stick some city-fight-esque stuff on it (sprue rubble works well!)

2: Clip/File off any overhang, and add some damage to any large objects

    3: Add Sand

4: add some suitable large rock (I use cat litter- Clean cat litter mind you!)

Unseen step 5: Base Black in prep for painting

Your paint scheme and posing of the battlesuits make for some very, very nice looking models - the camo look does actually does the figures justice, a huge improvement on the toyshop tau look. Could spot you as a guard player even without the thread title!

I like that you've gone for a unified green light on the lenses - gives it a futuristic special ops feel. Would love to see a tank done in this scheme but what you have looks great.

and don't worry, this ain't no regular Tau army, it's going to be a mechanised Tau army (only one railhead, going to be extensively converted, hate the turret)

Re: Tau - a break from guard

Time for a base-painting-bonanza! I'll be showing you all ( You know who you are!!) how I paint my bases. It's very very very simple. Trust me. And to prove it, I'll be doing them all step by step in the time It takes me to finish them.

I just recently put on the basecoat of graveyard earth on all the merry 8 infantry bases, and the tutorial base

remember, only put this on the gravel/sand, but don't worry if you get some on your city-fight like bits, it won't matter, being a bit sloppy isn't too much of a problem.

next update in a few, its an equally easy one. Trust me.

Re: Tau - a break from guard

    BAM! finished step 2

step 2 is comprised of taking your base, and inking it. Again, try not to get the ink on the city-stuff, but it's not a big deal if you do.

Re: Tau - a break from guard

forgot to mention, step 2 is with brown ink.

anyways, step 3: drybrush with graveyard earth.
Drybrush both the ground and the city-stuff. personally, I drybrush the city-stuff a bit lighter than the ground, but that's me, I really don't think it'd matter much.

    next up: step 4!

Re: Tau - a break from guard

    as promised: step 4!

this step is exactly the same as 3, but with bleached bone instead of graveyard earth.

a note, depending on the brush, you could either get a high, or low contrast base. For example, I used a makeup brush for my large (crisis) bases, and thus, got a soft transition between brown ink, to earth, to bone. With a smaller brush, (on the infantry) I got a more stark look between colours.

    just thought it needed mentioning.

now, there's one more "normal" step, and I'll be photoing that, but the other "optional" steps are: scenery damage (burns, the like) and weathering. If anyone desperately wants me to show those steps, speak now or forever hold thy peace!

Re: Tau - a break from guard

alright, step 5: the inking, and re-drybrushing of the "gubbins"

for any city junk on the base, you ink it. I do this to give some differentiation between sand, and other. Next, Re-drybrush the earth and bone onto them.

I'll be doing weathering tonight, but taking finished photo's tomorrow, as now, I can't hold the camera still. Also, much better light in the morning/afternoon.

hope my tutorial (complete with bad pictures!) was of use to someone!

Re: Tau - a break from guard

    Alright, some more photo's!

I've finished the pathfinders, minus obligatory clean up of the armour:

and next, a comparaison of the shas'ui, and the crisis suit. just to give a better definition of the pose.

now, all I need to do is: my test kroot, and my final two crisis suits. After that, I'll have finished all the Tau in my possesion at the moment (go self esteem!)

I'll be doing a step-by step of the painting of the second suit. So, keep an eye out for that soon!

They look very Necron we're-lurking-here-and-we're-going to-kill-you-y.

I like the look, makes them look more evil than the clean, sand-coloured Tau.
