Thread: JT's Plog o' Plod

    Re: JT's Plog o' Plod

    I'm back with an update!

My mini painting pace has slowed to an absolute crawl these days and I am definitely missing it. Work and family has kept me extremely busy and the light at the end of the tunnel is still a little small at the moment.

Anyway, I managed to get this done:

I'm quite excited with this because for me, a banner/banners in a unit really make the unit come together, visually. I'll be taking a group shot again after I finish painting a second banner bearer.

Nice, strong colours. I also like the banner designs.

Thanks guys! Will be painting the final few guys of 'halberdiers' and another banner bearer next. If I have time, perhaps another character as well. I really need to get those grunts done first though.

    Thanks leon!

Wow, it's been a long time since I've been on warseer...

Well, I didn't get much done in the way of miniatures over this time, and I'm back because I have finally dusted off some paintbrushes and did something!

A new release for Riceball Miniatures:

And a unit of them (WIP) to bolster my halfling nippon empire army (what a mouthful!):

And in my thirst for more 40k terrain, I found this in the packaging of an i-robot and stuck some milk carton caps on:

A command bunker of some sort. I hope to add blast-doors, some defence guns etc. Any suggestions of what I could use are welcome!

I saw the little guy on TTGN a couple of days ago and started to wonder where you had gone.
I like him, the hair is great. I wonder why he's holding his bow closer to the bottom, though.

My god he's alive!! Great work on the halfling. Is this going to be a more permanent return to warseer? That bunker looks big enough to have a landing platform on the roof, which would be very useful in game as somewhere for models to fight from. Combining it with some of the GW bastion/aegis defence line kits would probably work well if you wanted to go down that route. It looks like it could make quite the fortress size wise!

I'd add lots of bunker slits. These are easy to cut from plasticard and really make a difference to the terrain. I'd also suggest textured paint as it protects and gives it a nice concrete feel.

Ah, real life stuff took me away for some time... I didn't figure I would have had to stay away for such a long time! Thanks for the compliment.
As for holding the bow closer to the bottom, apparently the samurai used to do that. I think it is because the bow was far longer than the height of the man. I read that it was almost 2 meters long. Talk about compensating for something... More about that here. Apparently, some people are still horsing around with it in this day and age...

I have to agree though, that the halfling's bow is definitely not 2m long but it's an aesthetic kind of decision y'know?

Thanks for the compliment about the halfling! I do hope this is indeed a more permanent return to warseer. I had tried to come back in some of the recent months, but could not find the time beyond reading a few posts here or there. It was an incredibly crazy time, and not in a good way.
Thanks for the suggestions on the command bunker. I especially like the one about the landing pad, but it would probably have to be a landing pad for SM speeders or jetbike size stuff instead of flyers. I am also not sure where to place it so that it doesn't look too out of place. The thing is quite large, indeed, which reminds me that I have to put a model beside it for scale. I am trying to make this into the equivalent of the fortress of redemption kind of thing eventually (it has 3 modules, I think? This would be one of them) and I had always wanted to scratch build something specifically for 40k. I saw my chance in a block of styrofoam and a distant memory of a game called 'Dawn of War'.

Love the ideas. Any recommendations for textured paints that can work on white styrofoam as well as stencils for the plastic card slits welcome!

The little samurai looks excellent man! Welcome back.
The terrain looks promising, but a regular symmetrical piece like that will need (lots of?) good straight details to look really good, weapon slits, windows with bars, steel doors, maybe rails and spikes). I usually do more organic/random terrain and just pile on whatever junk and paint I have at hand

I suspected as much, but it's good to have it confirmed.
As I said before, I am not very knowledgable about Asian weapons and such, but it's interesting to learn more about that stuff.

Yay for the Halflings!! I like his hairdo! Very Samurai. Your painting is getting better and better too. Love the highlights on his arm guard.
Speaking of Samurai, I recently researched this RPG a bit, called Legend of the Five Rings. Has the Japanese Samurai flavour going on. You should check it out, it's pretty cool looking. They lack Halflings though... That's kind of a shame.

Ah, yes, the lots of good straight details is always daunting. I'll do my best with it!

Thanks Daniel! Will check out the Legend of the Five Rings, thanks for the heads up. No Samurai Halflings, indeed! The nerve! I shall write to Halflings International and put them on their blacklist this very moment until they are represented in the game.

Okay, some progress made on the samurai archer unit, though nothing to shout about as yet:

And I did a little preliminary work on another piece of terrina that I'm hoping to put together with the command bunker earlier:

It was fun doing this one, although the knife broke in the process. Breaking up the foam to make it look like the walls crumbled was fun. Probably was tapping into the inner boy in me (everyone?) which loves wanton destruction (from 2:55 onwards)...
I remembered the obligatory space marine amidst the terrain this time.

The two terrain pieces in their humble beginnings:

White foam always seems to remind me of the planet Hoth...

    Happy holidays, everyone!

Did a little more work on the round-ish terrain bit. It reminded me of the bridge in the Star Trek Enterprise... It's not going to be a replica, but it is going to be something similar. I'm thinking that control of this terrain piece gives you control of a defense laser or something similarly killy.

I basically put a thin watered-down layer of wall putty over the entire thing and am in the process of sticking bits on it to give it a command room feel to it.

A closeup with a mordheim augur model I plan to convert into a cultist (for scale)...

The halflings look great, the colours really suit the sculpts. The terrain has loads of potential - perhaps some textured plasticard for the floor would give it a 'military installation' feel.
