    Re: Safe-house Games

It happens, I need to get into the mind set of gaming competitively any how. It's amazing how difficult it is to work out a strategy for DOW Annihilation, like we discussed, I think I was too cautious about rolling for an objectives game and taking x3 tactical units. Once the battle company is finished I'm definately going to have to make some more marines with alternative special and heavy weapons in addition to some Dark Angel interpretations of Codex: SM characters...

    Re: Safe-house Games

The table will stay un-painted as it is also a surface for us to work/paint on also.
As far scenery goes, I do intend to get round to painting it and basing it with lots of rubble & sand bags etc. to create more area cover as commandojimbob & toonboy78 seem to prefer playing that way. I would recommend checking out Silentsmoke's DKoK log or our old "Epic of Three Gamers" log to see his finished board complete with no man's land, roads and trenches.

But my priority is to get my battle company painted, then more of the rest of my army.

Whilst I understand the sentiment, would it not be possible to put on a quick shade of grey without any texturing/details of any kind?

Good to see this log up and running btw, keep it up

Never. You have to bare in mind that it is a VERY prominent feature of our living room, to colour it would be waaaaay too imposing as its 6'x12'...

Have you thought about buying some battlefield mats? They come pre-textured.

Put them on when you're playing a game, and easily removable when you're painting and working on stuff.

Fair enough. That didn't occur to me, sorry.

Those urban 40K mats that GW produced way back would look good with your terrain; shame they're oop now.

Edit: Still, having just seen Silentsmoke's boards, I guess this conversation is mute

If you don't mind me asking, what games would those be used in? That is, would it only be those with Silentsmoke playing, as they were his boards, or even just games featuring his Krieg forces, or would everyone battling in the safehouse get to have a go?

And furthermore, what would you say would be the rules about terrain; I've noticed you kind of keep tabs as to who owns what terrain, but I get the impression it all gets used together when you play. Would this be a correct assumption?

Not sure, as the complete set has not been gamed on yet.
Personally, I prefer to play using the urban terrain as it's far more fluffy for most armies, where as Silentsmoke's terrain is specific to the DKoK.

As far a pieces of terrain goes, its probably %60 mine, %37 Wolfen's & %3 Silentsmoke's. Wolfen's Terrain lives here as he only games here and we have specific storage space. Rules-wise, any one is welcome to use every one else's terrain, just be respectful to it, any damage caused is to be repaired, and if you manage to total it, you will be replacing it (but its all rather well built).

    Re: Safe-house Games

Thanks for the enthusiasm but it would dominate the room far too much it does take up a large portion of our home in which we have lives outside of the hobby, so it won't happen, ever.

We created this log in the General project logs rather than the Scenery logs where our old thread was moved to in the big Warseer shuffle as this log is more about our general hobby related activities and a sum up of our progress as hobbyists, not specifically about our table or scenery. So please, let's not get bogged down in "when will you paint your scenery?" or "you should paint your table". Personally, I have a very demanding job which limits my time for the hobby much more than I'd like and slows down progress on my on going projects, so please be patient...

Thanks very much! to all of you who follow our log, your enthusiasm is much appreciated!!!

    Re: Safe-house Games

So, today was the first time that Silentsmoke, Wolfen and myself were all available to do some serious dice rolling and tapemeasuring since a couple of weeks ago.

To celebrate we decided to do an apoc game, Silentsmoke and myself would each take 3000pts to produce an army of 6000pts with x2 super heavy/ apoc cheeseynessness, and Wolfen would take a 6000pts army with his Uber blood(y) letter thingy and a super heavy.

The game resulted in a good afternoon with; gaming, a trip to the pub for lunch and beer followed by more gaming and a rather disturbing presence of nurgle

    To sum up the game;
Silentsmoke and my self got thoroughly bitchslapped!

    The final scores:
    Silentsmoke lost: 2478pts
    I lost: 2635pts
    Wolfen lost: 2388pts

    Highlights include;
Silentsmoke getting to use his AlphaStrike from his Manticore formation.
Silentsmoke missing the board with his vortex missile of DOOOOOM.
    My Thunderfires performing well again.
    My Dreadnoughts getting p*OwnEd again...
Wolfen's HUGE Daemon eating lots of imperial souls.
Wolfen's Dreadnoughts going crazy with their guns and not hitting anything

    Here's some pictures...

    Battle lines are drawn

Silentsmoke: "How many dice? 54? Really?!!"
Wolfen: "I'm supposed to have that many dice! Where's Ragnar when I want him!?!"

    Re: Safe-house Games

Ah yes - Toonboy78 - its been a while since me and Toonboy have had a game of 40k against each other (Bloodbowl has recently been the game). Im going to go back to basics with my Tau list, as my mission to prove Tau can invest a good chunk into troops and be competitive has had mixed results (and dire vs Toonboys hall of cheese, though my skills of rolling 1's and 2's over last couple of games has come on leaps and bounds). So im going back 9 months to my last victory vs Toonboy where i took minimal troops and annihilated him - though it was annihilation and got away with it .

    My 1750pts List:
    Shas'el - Plasma / Pod / Multi / Stims
    Shas'el - Plasma / Pod / Multi

    4x Stealths + 5 Gun Drones
    3x Crisis Suits : Team leader with Missile / Fusion / Array / HW Multi + TLock/ Bonding / 2x Shield Drones, 2x XV8s with Twin-Pod / Arrays
    3x Crisis Suits : Team leader with Missile / Fusion / Array / HW Multi + TLock/ Bonding / 2x Shield Drones, 2x XV8s with Twin-Fusion / Arrays

    8x Pathfinders with a Warfish

    6x Firewarriors
    6x Firewarriors

2x Broadsides with Adv Stabs : Team Leader with 2x Shield Drones / Bonded
2x Broadsides with Adv Stabs : Team Leader with 2x Shield Drones / Bonded
Hammerhead Gunship with Burst Cannons / Multi / TLock / Disruption Pod (forgot to pack the bloody thing as i was in a rush and ended up fielding 3 units of Sniper drones instead)

    Total 1745pts

Last game vs Toonboy was back in March, where my 3 Devilfish and 2 Hammerheads felt the full force of Vulkan , so now packing only 2 vehicles, im hoping that the freed up points ploughed into mobile shooty suits can deal a mighty blow just like when my Goblin killed his Ogre (thats right you heard me ) in BB last week (though he killed an experienced Goblin today )

    Re: Safe-house Games

So the scene was set, this was to be mine and commandos first 1 on 1 game against each other in over 3 months. He had already tailored his list to play against me but in an unsurprising xenos trick he “forgot” his hammerhead so had to sub in some sniper drone squads (he only had one vehicle now). In addition to this he brought along Fish and Chip and didn’t even offer me one (he claims I don’t have any room left to store food). I was weak at the knees!

Silentsmoke (the adjudicator) roll mission and it was …Capture and control, with a dawn of war setup. We rolled off and commando won and with a moment of madness (after being teased how long it was taking to get his army out and ready to use) said he would go first!

He didn’t have anyone to set up, his twin fusion suits would be deep-striking in. Only when it came to my turn and I didn’t deploy anything did it dawn on him that he may have made a little error, but would it come back and haunt him? My speeders would be deep-striking in.

    Turn 1

The tau all move on in a line across his table edge. He rolls just short of being able to get up into some of the buildings.
In my turn the ironclad dropped right in front of a broadside squad and a tactical squad with Vulkan turned up in another pod next to the devilfish. The raiders moved full 12” (I forgot to pop smoke with them, which would come back and haunt me) my iron clad shot at the broadside and failed to cause a wound, Vulkan and his squad shot at a squad of sniper drones and wiped them out and the other half of the tactical squad tried to take out the dvil fish and he passed his cover save.

    Turn 2.

In drop the twin linked fusion suits next to my raider, and promptly popped it! My tactical squad disembarked. Next up the broadsides wiped out my ironclad! What a disaster could it get any worse? Yes and the squad Vulkan were in took casualties and rolled 11 for a break test! At least that was then end of shooting, how bad can a tau assault phase be………fusion suits assaulted my 10 man tact and cause it to run off. Now only writing this the day after do we both realise that deep-striking units can’t assault!!! Even 3 experienced players can forget about BIG rules like that in the heat of a game! (it just highlight how difficult it is to play against xenos armies as their owners are CHEATERS)
In my turn I had to do a lot of thinking…I was about to take out his 2 squads of firewarriors and therefore the worst I could do would be a draw, but I really wanted to get a win and with only 8 scoring marines left I had to think how to do this. My dread turned up and landed in front of the broadsides and a speeder got delayed, next up the running away ones rallied and the 3 broke off from Vulkan and moved back towards my objective, and Vulkan went towards the enemy. The terminators jumped out to dish out some beatings to the twin fusion team and the redeemer trundled forward. My full combat squad shot at the devil fish then multiple assaulted both the fish and the fire warrior squad taking out the fish, but the firewarriors held strong. Terms wiped out suits!

    Turn 3

He moved 2 teams and his commander towards my objective and was only able to stun the dread; he did however finish off Vulkan. My tact finished off the fire warrior squad ready to take out the other squad.
In my turn my 2 speeders landed, and were able to reduce on team down to 1 guy while the redeemer finished him off. My marines had jumped in the redeemer by then. I then shot up the last of his fire warriors therefore getting at least a draw.

    Turn 4

At last his stealth suits turned up and came on the edge near my objectives, he was still again only able to stun the dread and maybe take an arm off. One speeder got popped and the other shaken. The last
My redeemer moved back round to my objective and shot a few of the suits, and the terms and the speeder protected the objective from the stealth suits getting close. I remembered to pop smoke on my dread!

    Turn 5

He took off the last weapon of the dread and immobilised it! My redeemer moved to get the guys out on to p of the objective and then dropped a flame storm cannon over the stealth squad and wiped them out.

Silentsmoke then rolled 2 for the end of the game with a 1-0 win to the marines!

In hindsight those crisis suits assaulting made the game more fun to play, I think he would have struggled to shift my guys off my objective even to contest it, and yet again the sheer staying power of marines came to the fore.

A good game, and next week and game with my not so cheesy grey knights against Silentsmoke’s guard.

Picture were taken and I will upload them later

    Re: Safe-house Games

    Thats a fair assessment

Yes it takes me so long to set-up, that i completely forgot to put Toonboy in first, and about 5 seconds after saying it i realised what i had just done - and spent the next 10 minutes in an angry sulk !

Pivotal issue for me - the delayed stealths until turn 4 meant the last 3 marines were able to get into the Landraider and be safe. From that point i had lost a real opportunity. I was really pleased with how i dealt with the 2 pods in my lines turn1, and again, though irrelevant as you won Toonboy, i still think you use your pods too aggressively - so i had twarted the assault, and maybe in another mission, a different result but Marines are resilient, and Toonboy (begrudgingly to say) tactically did the right thing !

I had a lot left at the end of the game (4 broads, 8 pathfinders, 2 Sniper teams, 2 Commanders, a Suit) but only the Crisis suits had mobility, and even though turn 6 may have seen me get close, with 4 terms, a redeemer and a speeder, it was going to be near impossible to contest.

We all missing the assaulting from deep strike was funny - though as discussed, easy enough to miss since Crisis Suits can move their 6" from deep strike - just that the deep strike rules say you cant assault !

Still.... It was nice to kill Vulkan through lots of pulse rifle fire - thats a win in itself !
