    ElTanko's Spare Time!

Hello all, welcome once again to a plog 'o' mine. This one is going to be very different from all my others, which have been dedicated to one army.

2 weeks ago now, Mrs Tanko gave birth to our first child, here he is!

and now as you can imagine baby Tanko takes up a heck of a lot of time! Meaning I have very little time for painting etc!

Because of this I have decided it was about time I just paionted randon models in schemes that always appealed to me.

To start with, I have taken my 5 painted Marine Veterans and the sternguard set that has been sitting around for a year or so now, and paint each one representing a different chapter. But I didn't want to go with run of the mill chapters. So I have chosen 10 chapters rarely seen, some of which I had never even heard of until I went searching!

A word of warning: As I said, I have little time, so this will be a very slow thread. Please bear with me and, hopefully, enjoy!!

Here is my first current WIP:

Its the first time I have tried painting a model with a bulk of white.

    C+C as always

    ElTanko

Edit: The pic of the little 'un is called 'Fart Face' and was taken just as he was passing wind he doesn't usually look that messed up!!

    Re: ElTanko's Spare Time!

Managed to find some painting time today, and have managed to finish off my first veteran. So without further ado:

VETERAN BROTHER, SABIAN FERRO, MENTOR LEGION

I'm very pleased with the overall outcome. Not so happy with the white, wasn't really to sure how to shade it in the recesses very well. So any tips welcome.

Very nice. For shading the white, have you tried blacklining with a pen? Much less effort than the fiddly business of painting in the gaps, and less messy than washes.

    Hey mate :-),

congrats for beeing a daddy now! You must be proud
Didn't know you wanted to start Mentors but I am positively surprised: you really have become a very good painter now :-)
I really love that green, the white is crisp, well done.
The Edges /wings of the front Aquilla (or how it is called) could use some brighter yellow and the skull on the backpack a highlighting.

For shading the white I would suggest lining the edges of the armour parts etc. with a very thinned light blue, only a bit more blue than the white.
The blue will help to increase the feeling of the white, also you have colours which work well together.
Of course the recesses will be black, what you have already done.

I haven't tried a pen yet, the only time I did before I smudged it and it really ruined the model! But it was a pain painting in the gaps, so may have to try again. Thanks for the advice

Thanks Noc, i'm not a great painter, but steadily improving! Fatherhood is stressful!! I'm only painting this Mentor, for now at least. I see what you mean about the highlight on the aquilla, I think I went over the top with washes!

Next up, im planning on painting a Blood Raven. DOW II has got me in the mood to paint one of their brethren!

    Re: ElTanko's Spare Time!

I find painting random models in random color schemes is a lot more fun than painting armies.

I paint white in reverse. Shading after painting the white is easier...at least for myself it is. Blues and greys are usually used to shade white. Watered down codex grey, shadow grey, or even just a badab black wash in the recesses works well.

Looking forward to what other models you have to show us.

    Re: ElTanko's Spare Time!

Have a brief update. My Blood Raven Veteran, very WIP.
I decided to go for a dark red as the main base, and will lighten it up with highlights.

    Re: ElTanko's Spare Time!

White is always tricky to manage, and I have found the best method is to produce an off-white colour, and save pure white only for highlights. I use a 2:1 (thereabouts) space wolves grey to khemri brown as a base, and add a little more SW grey to make a 1:1 mix for a layer. This is then gradually blended up to a 1:9 mix of the base colour to skull white before highlights are applied with skull white. devlan mud and charadon granite washes in the receses for weathering/grime and hey! you're done

Firstly Eltanko, congratulations on the little one, hopefully he'll learn to amuse himself so you can focus on the 40k

The mentor loos good fella, in regard to shading white water down some dark grey paint, i tend to use adeptus battle grey, then wash it into the recess. Make sure its really really thin and after a couple of applications, with drying between, it should help bring out the definition.

Looking forward to seeing that blood raven finished!

I would advise having a little mess around when choosing a shade for white, you get totally different effects with different colours. Blues gives a brighter colder white, where as grey is less bright. using brown gives a dirty, but warmer feel. Saying that i haven't used brown as a shade on white, it's normally a cream colour when brown is used, might work as a stark shade though.

eltanko, can't believe I missed this. Your Mentor guy looks really good, the white is very nice! If I might be so bold as to suggest that you try adding a little Devlan Mud wash to the green areas (a directed wash, not an all-over wash) you might be really happy with the results.

The Blood Raven is looking really well too - any updates?

@Spaint. Thanks for the advice, I think theres a few things I could add to improve him.
Sadly, and frustratingly, I have had so little free time to do anything except change nappies and make goo goo gaa gaa noises!! I really REALLY want to do some painting though, and do keep complaining to the other half that I haven't had time too! Even if I manage just one brush stroke, I will post a pic!!!

Hey cute kid (you're gonna keep getting this as long as were still on page one ^^)
seeing as how I kinda missed the beginning of you XI legion marines I want to be here from as soon as possible!

mentor looks great, when painting white, I usually basecoat the model codex grey and leave that colour in the recesses

    looking great
    keep 'em coming

    Re: ElTanko's Spare Time!

space wolves grey in the recesses looks quite nice, can be a bit light though so you may want to add a touch of shadow grey. Although if you want to save the hassel just go with codex grey like GraveHound sugested.
