Thread: Tactica: Warriors of Chaos 8th Ed

Re: Tactica: Warriors of Chaos 8th Ed

I usually like running units of 15 and use them to go against other units. I usually have 2 tzeench warriors with 1 unit of khorne. the tzeench warriors would be my anvil while my khorne will do the butchering. i also have units that go around them like chariots, hellcannon, shrine, chaos lord and sorcerers. it works pretty effective for me. just need to give them jobs to kill

Which armies do you normally play against?

And what points value games do you normally run?

Heh. How hard is it to fight Dark Elves and Wood Elves?

I will be facing these two armies, and want to know if there's anything I need to look out for. I'm concerned about Executioners and Dark Elf magic phases, and Dryads and those pesky bows from the Wood Elves, along with their massive amounts of dispel dice.

Dark elf magic, with their "power of darkness" spells. each sorceress can potentioly power their own spells. black horror, and soul stealer. those two are big ones to watch out for. Blade wind is not to worrying if it hits a unit with magic resistance or good saves. the 2d6 can roll low. if you think its you can weather it, just let it go through. save your power dice for black horror or soul stealer.

Hydras! watch out for those. pain in the asses. well, fire kills them abnormaly fast. but if you can't flame em. it hurts. be carefull when their characters get within 12 inches to one of your wizards, they may have the Ring of Hotek. Its a portable Pandemonium.

Stay away from Witch Elves. especialy anything bigger than 20. Keep an eye out to see what ability the Cauldron gave them too. a near 100 attacks comming from a horde of witch elves will make you crap bricks. Template them. something. they have ini 6. so they'll go first and wreck face.

Wood elves. they are stubborn in forests. nothing can be horderd, save eternal guard.(pretty much anway) most army has 5-? limits. but the stubborn and the fact that your not steadfast in forests works to their advantage. i dont' think they get negatives for shooting through forests either. and now they can move forests even if your in them.

I'm glad to hear about the warrior blocks of 15. I just wanted to make sure that something would arrive intact with those numbers.

I think I would like to flank my warriors with a couple of shrines. I like the combo with mot but mos might insure they keep the flank up and don't break. Man with all this talk about trolls I would love to run a unit but everything is pretty tight at 1800 already.

Does your magic phase suffer against Wood Elves?

Thankfully, I don't have to face off against Witch Elves just yet (my friend hates metal minis, so troop blocks are all plastics), but cheers for the heads up. I forgot about his hydra... how would a sorcerer w/ Lore of Fire work against one of those?

    ***

With regard to the 15 unit blocks of warriors... is that a decent way to play them in larger point battles? I always get the feeling that I need to field as many blocks of stuff as possible, just to create a targeting conundrum for the enemy... especially ones with lots of artillery, or elite troops.

Im not sure how magic vs wood elfs would work. i havn't used my WoC against them. dwarfs before WoC. so i didn't have magic. Sadly, i don't remember their magic phase very well :|

a tzeentch sorcerer with flickering fire may work out better. as the str can get up to 7. thats how i killed it last game. 7 str 7 hits on it i burst it into a shower bubble of goo so awesome, papa Nurgle would be proud.

Oh yeah, I forgot that Flickering Fire counts as fire. I liked the idea of having a couple of cheap sorcerers just armed with Flickering Fire running around... reminds me of the Chaos Marine Thousand Sons lists, where every unit had a sorcerer leading them.

Speaking of which. I like the sound of a bunch of units being led by level 1 Sorcerers, with each one throwing Flickering Fire around, or some other cheap default spells. Has anyone tried this to good effect?

hmm. i havn't, mainly because i don't nearly have that many sorcerer models. but that sounds fun. lol! level 1 tzeentch. thats a +2 to flickering. pretty sweet. lol. 1 die at it, and the big bad level 4 gets his gateway on 3 dice.

Re: Tactica: Warriors of Chaos 8th Ed

Well I've got my 2500 and 3000 lists written, and am slowly building my new collection of WoC.

But now I'm tasked with writing a 1000 point list within an additional set of limitations: they must only include the models I currently own.

So I've got 51 Marauders, 12 Chaos Warriors, 5 Knights, the Gamesday 2010 Chaos Sorcerer, an on-foot Nurgle Champion, and 10 Hounds.

My current list is a Chaos Lord, Festus, 11 Undivided Chosen with Halberds, Champ and Favor of the Gods, 2 units of 5 hounds, and a block of 45 Khorne Marauders.

I'm thinking of running Festus in the Marauders, with the Lord in with the Chosen, and the hounds screening their advance.

My real dilemma is in equipping the Regenerating, Poisoned Attacks Marauder unit. My first instinct was MoK+GW but when I thought about adding Festus and adding poisoned attacks, additional handweapons seemed a better bet.

Anyone know the math on whether 25 poisoned attacks is better than 19 with Great Weapons or Flails?

Re: Tactica: Warriors of Chaos 8th Ed

I have a question concerning the war altar. If I have the favor of the gods on a hero in a unit and I use the war altar to bestow a favor on that unit, may I modify the result so that it lands on a gift I already have from another war altar so I may roll again?
I run 3 war altars and give the favor to my chaos lord in a death star of chaos knights of tzeentch. I shoot for the ward save, stubborn and usually toughness or strenght. If say they have toughness already from another war shrine and I land on one below toughness with another war shrine can I modify the result to toughness so I can reroll the roll on the eye of the gods? I want to get the ward save and then move to one of my units of warriors so they can get something good too , but I do best when I get the 3 up ward save on my knights...pretty unstoppable at that point.
thanks in advance for your help.

    Only works once.

Same as when I started in ye olde days of Hordes of Chaos, people sent empire captains on flying horses for mage hunting duty. Mostly because the only chaos player we had played Khorne, so I was sort of a wildcard.

"I charge your level 2 wizard."
    -Ok!
*armor of damnation does his thing*
    "Damn!"
    -My turn.
"wait, why do you get four attacks, and why does a sword of might make him S6, he's a mage right?"
-Why yes, he also has exalted champion stats.

Ah, the days of old. Sure, it was herohammerish, but at least tzeentch warrior-mages were doing it with style.

I assume from the 25 AHW/19 GW, you are running the unit 6 wide?

You need to work out what you want to do with the unit. If you have 50-odd marauders, you can run a very feasible and cheap horde OR you can run them as a steadfast tar-pit, but if it is the later then you want them with shields and MoT.

So assuming you are going offensive then, you really want to kill as much as possible.

    AHW
    - Fight in initiative order
    - +1A per model
    - No benefit to supporting attacks/horde attacks

    GW
    - Alwazs Fight Last
    - +2S per model
    - Strength bonus applies to supporting attacks/horde

    Math Hammer

    Horde Formation

    Vs. WS3, T3, LA/Sh
    AHW50 Attacks: 11.6 Wound
GW40 Attacks: 18.5 Wounds (assuming less than 20 casualties suffered)

    Vs. WS5, T4, 1+ A/S
    AHW50 Attacks: 2.3 Wound
GW40 Attacks: 4.4 Wounds (assuming less than 20 casualties suffered)

    Frontage of Six (why?!)

    Vs. WS3, T3, LA/Sh
    AHW24 Attacks: 5.5 Wound
    GW18 Attacks: 8.3 Wounds

    Vs. WS5, T4, 1+ A/S
    AHW24 Attacks: 1.1Wound
    GW18 Attacks: 2.0 Wounds

Conclusions: In all situations GW is better than AHW + poison.

AHW seems like the sort of choice you would make if you were facing off against horded Skaven Slaves, or similar.

    Easier said than done.

And it's rarely a good trade off, to lose your expensive Kholek killing machine, for his suicidal lvl 2 mage.

Yeah and since you have high I on most infantry blocks, it's pretty much just Trolls/Hellcannons/Kholek that will get hit with spells like Pit of Shades/Purple Sun. Targetting your I5 troops is wasteful, and most people will recognize that.

Oh, and as for Festus w/ Marauders? My friend Tom is running Festus and Palanquin BSB in a unit of 50 w/ MoN and great weapons. Seems to work well for him so far. They take a real beating since they attract attention, but when they hit they hit HARD.

Just out of curiosity, is a Palanquin on a regular cav base, or a Monster base?

So I could pick up that Daemon special character, Epidemius?

Also regarding Horde formation on Marauders, with being on 25mm bases doesn't that make the unit particularly unwieldy?

I hadn't even looked at Palanquins, but an additional 6 WS3 Poisoned attacks seems particularly awesome.
