Hal's Fantasy Thread (O&G wash painting, 6500+ points)

Hey there, I've decided to paint up an army that I got from a friend who has quit the hobby. Even though this will be a speed paint job, I expect this project to take many months.

I'll be using a gray scale method for batch painting along with the GW Washes, as seen in this thread : http://www.warseer.com/forums/showth...ghlight=washes

    (Kudos to Bigsquig!)

That should cover most of the basic troops. I'll paint a better standard on the warmachines and characters.

There is literally so much stuff that I'm not sure what exactly is all there, haha.

I'll post a pic of the assembled army before I start the painting process and a list of everything included.

Here's some pictures : (yes, I do my assembling on my wet bar, next to my keg tap machine, haha)

It does look like there is a fair bit there, I will look forward to seeing them all set up, I always enjoying armyshots of large armies (even if they are unpainted).

Little bit of an update here. Been assembling the massive amount of models I received and have listed everything this army will include. I figure this will probably take a year or so to finish, even with speed painting with washes. I was thinking of doing detailed bases, but not anymore, haha.

I could do a simple stone + grass base as suggested by Bigsquig in the washing thread. However, I was thinking of making Grimgor's Horde representing his attack on Kislev, so snow bases with sporadic vegetation. How do you all think that would look for Orcs? (See current Orc Army Book, page 46)

Here's a list of what I've got (6600 points is the current approx., it can be made into much more as I haven't added commands, armor upgrades, magic items, banners and hero/lord upgrades)

    84 NG Archers (skull pass)
    119 NG Spearmen (skull pass)
    2 NG Shaman (skull pass)
33 NG Command figures (skull pass)
30 Forest Goblin Spider Riders (skull pass)
15 NG Fanatics (mix of old and new)
    4 Goblin Spear Chukkas
1 Goblin Doom Diver (newest one)
5 NG Squig Hoppers (mix of old and new)
    25 Goblin Wolf Riders
    5 Snotling Swarms
    3 Old metal River Trolls
3 Common Trolls (skull pass) (*may convert these, I don't like the dwarf rock)
    20 Orc Boyz w/ spears (multi-piece)
    35 Orc Boyz w/ 2 choppas (multi-piece)
28 Orc Boyz w/ 2 choppas (6th edition one piece)
74 Orc Arrer Boyz (6th edition one piece)
    5 Orc Boar Chariots
    1 Orc Rock Lobber
    1 Orc Warlord on Boar
1 Orc Warboss on Wyvern (recent wyvern)
1 Orc Shaman on Wyvern (recent wyvern)
18 Orc Boar Boyz (older ones)
26 Black Orcs (newer multi-plastics and a couple old armored metals, look similar)
1 Grimgor (probably going to use in the Black Orc unit if I use him at all)
1 Morglum Necksnapper on warboar (could use as Gorbad if I wanted to)
    1 Wurrzag on Boar
1 Skarsnik & Gobbla (older model)

There's a lot of good and bad with this lot. The good news is that there is a good amount of diversity and there is still plenty of room to expand the army with missing units if I feel like it in the future (Savage Orcs, Goblin Wolf Chariots, Squig Herds, Snotling Pump Wagons, and Giants). One of the reasons I really love Orcs and Goblins is because of the sheer amount of units they have, granted not all of them are worth using, but it is fun to have such a wide amount of options.

The bad, there are a lot of single pose models. The night goblins won't be too bad since they will be in big blocks anyways, but painting them will be horrific. The Orc Arrer Boyz are pretty "meh", but since they'll be in large 2 ranked units for volleying, shouldn't look too bad. I don't really care at all for the single piece Orc Boyz with dual choppas as they don't match well with the multi piece Orc Boyz. I might end up just using a few of them thrown into the multi-piece Orc Boyz, instead of their own unit.

Another problem is that the person I got this lot from must not have heard of ranking up, so I will be working on repositioning bases and arms probably for a week (especially with the Black Orcs, they are horribly posed)

I'm thinking of splitting the army into several groups for painting purposes :

-1a. Single piece Orc Boyz and Arrer Boyz : similar profile and model size. This will allow me to see how the Waagh will look with fast wash painting. If I don't care for the overall look, I can try different methods until I find something I like.
-1b. Multi-piece Orc Boyz : should have a good rhythm going after finishing off the one pieces
-1c. Black Orcs (these should be relatively easy as badab black wash really adds the dirty look to metallic colors, perfect for black orcs)

-2a. Oddities : (Trolls, snotlings, cavalry mounts) Just to change it up a bit and to ward off boredom of painting.
-2b. Orc Riders, Goblin Wolf Riders, Forest Goblin Riders, chariot models

-3. Warmachines : Rock Lobber, Spear Chukkas, Chariots (inc. crews)

-4a. Night Goblin fanatics, squig hoppers, (possible squig herds if I buy them)
-4b. Night Goblin archers and spearmen : saving the worst for last, it will be extremely tedious to paint, but since it will be at the end of the project, I'm hoping I will stay motivated to finish it. I'm not sure gray scale washing will be the best option for these, might just go for a simple black primer and paint as normal (or prime white and find a big bucket of black ink wash, haha)

-5. Lords and characters : Won't be speed painting these and will probably put a bit of effort into making these look nice while still fitting the theme of the army.

That's the plan anyways for the next several months (or years)

1 Grimgor (probably going to use in the Black Orc unit if I use him at all)
1 Morglum Necksnapper on warboar (could use as Gorbad if I wanted to)
    1 Wurrzag on Boar
1 Skarsnik & Gobbla (older model)
    Could you show these models?

Also, I like the idea of only washes, and I have used this myself on some of my 40k orks. I was wondering what you meant by "grayscaling" I heard what it was in the fun with washes thread, but I didn't quite understand what to do to greyscale a miniature.

I'll post pics of most of the army assembled in the next couple of days, still working on gluing all these plastics together, I think I'm developing a glue blister on my thumb from it all, haha.

Anyways, to begin gray scaling you prime a model white and than wash it with a black wash. This gives the model a grayish tone before applying colors. Gray scaling can be basically thought of as a pre-shading for the washes, it adds depth to the model that will be accentuated by the colored washes applied over it.

At least that's my understanding of gray scaling. I've started my first test batch of washed Orc Arrer Boyz, I'll post a little step by step gallery as well so people can see the results.

That'll help alot. Seeing what you've done with other miniatures, and in the small amount of time you did them in amazes me, and I would love to see more.

Alright, for some reason my camera bugged out and didn't save the army wide shot and of course I've already put them into separate trays for painting, /sigh

Anyways, here's the first test model(s) of the gray scale washing method for the Orc Arrer Boyz. I painted 15 of them up as a unit to see how they would look all together and I think they are decent table top quality models that were produced in about 10 minutes of actual painting time (had to wait for washes to dry of course)

The steps are as follows :

    1) White primer

    2) Badab black wash for gray scale

    3) First light wash of the follwing :
    a) Clothes = Gryphonne Sepia
    b) Boots/Bow/Leather Bracer = Devlan Mud
    c) Skin = Thraka Green

    4) Second wash with same colors and after it dries, a very light wash of badab black. Metal parts (bow pieces, metal bracer, swords) painted with a watered down Boltgun metal wash followed up with a Badab black wash.

(Bags and other torso accessories painted Chaos Black, teeth painted Bleached Bone afterwards, not pictured)

They aren't the prettiest painted miniatures ever, but this method is extremely fast.

That's looking pretty solid, keep up the good work, too bad that the army wide shot got lost. But oh well guess I will just have to wait to see the painted army shot !
