Thread: Purplebeard's Dwarf & WHQ Log

Smile Purplebeard's Dwarf & WHQ Log

Hello all. Welcome to my WHQ & Dwarf log. A few months ago, I looked through my figure collection and realised just how little of it was painted. Over the last few months, I have been trying to remedy the situation. This log will hold pics of my WFB Dwarves and Warhammer Quest stuff.

Firstly, WHQ Heroes - please note that I have many more of these, but these were all I could sensibly fit into the picture!

    More Heroes!

    Imperial Noble

    Halfling

    Witch Hunter

Sorceress (Use as a Wizard or even as a Vampire)

There is a lot more WHQ and Dwarf goodness to follow shortly - more WHQ Heroes & 'Lair of The Orc Lord' figures, plus lots of Warhammer Dwarves (80s / C series, etc). Bye for now!

Thanks for the comments. I'll add more at the weekend. Next on the WHQ list are the Elf Ranger and a Battlemasters Ogre, plus Dwarves to come too!

Re: Purplebeard's Dwarf & WHQ Log

These look great and that is a lot as I really think that most of the miniatures GW produced in the early 90s are really crap.

Now please explain the colour of your Dwarf's beard (and your nick name)!

Re: Purplebeard's Dwarf & WHQ Log

I think you'll prefer my Dwarves (as opposed to my WHQ stuff) - I have plenty of these to follow - lots of random 80s stuff in there - Gnomes, Bugman's Rangers, and Warriors (a mix of metal Imp/Norse and both plastic psychostyrene types) and several of the King's Court figures, plus more fun stuff I think that perhaps my mind has been slightly warped by the influence of Chaos, hence my love for such deeply heretical things as Dwarven cavalry, Wizards, all-female units, and purple beards!

    More stuff!

I finally managed to get camera to figures, and so I bring you more pictures today. Firstly, Dwarves:

    Bugman's Rangers (2nd Edition):

    Bugman's Rangers (2nd Edition) - I'm planning on building up a 2nd unit too.
I'm planning on building up a 2nd unit too.

Dwarven Characters - including a Shieldmaiden, Gnome Illusionist and Wizard, amongst others:

    More to follow....

    Dwarves & WHQ figures

A Dwarf King & Queen from the Dwarf King's Court set from the 1980s, plus C series figures - a female rogue, Shieldmaiden, and Sage - the group shot hasn't turned out well, but the close-ups are better:

To add to my heresy, I have another Dwarven Wizard, and a Dwarf King on Horseback (!) - sculpts by Essex Miniatures:

The Essex figures are huge next to Citadel miniatures, so you could not reasonably mix the infantry, but I think that you can just about get away with Essex cavalry next to Citadel foot figures. The horses are perfectly sized for Warhammer Dwarves, and I have attempted converting riders, but haven't yet found suitable base models, so, atm, am stuck with Essex Dwarves.

    More Dwarves!

Last of the Dwarves for now:

Classic Marauder Wizard (with luscious purple beard!) first:

    Dwarf Wizard

    Slayers

I'm not keen on the way that they have turned out. I went for blonde hair because I haven't yet found a satisfactory way to paint red hair and retain shading/detail, etc. I am thinking of fudging it and mixing up the hair colours, including natural colours plus a few crazies with pink/purple/green/electric blue beards, and maybe bodypaint for some - unsure as yet - suggestions are welcome :S

    WHQ Heroes & Bad Guys

Warhammer Quest stuff now - more heroes:

Salty Seadog, Gnome, Druid, High Priest/Liche Priest, Goldhunter, Kislevite Shaman

Dwarf Wizard, Bounty Hunter, Amazon (from 80s Talisman - a nod to Welf there), Wizard, and Brewmaster (with his trusty beer barrel!)

    Evil Heroes/ Anti-heroes (?)

Vampiress, Chaos Warrior, Assassin, Chaos Sorceror, Witch Elf, & Necromancer

I'm off now to prepare more goodies (or should that be baddies?)

    These look great. nice paintjobs.

I really fancy those old miniatures from the 80s and (surprise, surprise) especially the dwarfs.

Nice to see you also have that pretty dwarf lady from Hasslefree.

Is there a reason why you replaced the original Bugman musician with his Norse counterpart? And where is the Champion?

Looking forward to see more pictures.

Yay! The Dread King! I always loved that model, is very characterful! It seems to be shouting "Release the Kraken!!"

Re: Purplebeard's Dwarf & WHQ Log

@Daniel36 & Mr.Ultra - Hi. Thanks for the positive comments. I'll try and keep it updated reguarly and put lots of interesting stuff on here (hopefully!).

@Welf VIII - Yes, I have the musician (not sure about the Champion :? ), I'm planning on getting a 2nd unit of Bugman's Rangers and putting him in there, but that plan may change. I like the Hasslefree figures, I'd like to get Grimdalf. I may get some more HF minis in the far-off future.

My plan is/was to go for a more Viking/Norse/Dark Age look - I find that GW mixes the clothing on the Dwarves a lot (they have individual figs for every period from Sub-Roman British to ACW), so I am aiming for a tighter theme - anything with a Renaissance, Medieval or later appearance is out - so virtually no Imperial Dwarves, and no Marauder Dwarves except for Slayers and a few select warriors and command figures.

What is in, therefore, is the following:
    Norse Dwarves - CCMwiki page

C08 Northern Dwarves - CCMwiki page

C06 Dwarf Adventurers - CCMwiki page

ME33 Dwarves - CCMwiki page - if I can get them.

In addition, Bugman's 2nd edition are in, possibly 3rd edition (I have 24 of those undercoated), and possibly 1st edition, plus various characters and a few of the older plastic dwarves (both psychosytrene types and a very few of the 4th ed plastics.

Re: Purplebeard's Dwarf & WHQ Log

I would like to have a couple of units with spears to keep up the Dark Age theme - anything with a Viking, Anglo-Saxon or Rus 'look' is going in the army. The Queen is going to get a unit of 24 Shield Maidens (mix of Norse and C6/C8 figs). I am going to use the scale-mail figures from the two ranges to create an Ironbreaker unit - possibly with green 'dragonplate' armour (eg. C8 figs 02 and 16, Norse Sigveld and 030207), and for Hammerers, I am planning to make a mixed unit of veterans, mostly the 'Huscarl'-type figures (eg. Norse Thorm).

All of this though, is to come after the core of the army, the warriors!

Smile UPDATES! Dwarf Clansmen, DBR Scots, and Dwarves just in...

Hi everyone. It has been a busy week. My last paintbrush 'died' on me this week - so I have lots of incomplete figures - firstly, some 3/4 done Warriors:

I used a mix of both types of Psychostyrene Dwarves (including the rare multi-part ones), a few 4th Ed plastics (because I already had them painted :S), and a smattering of Norse, Northern and other Dwarves. The Musician (not shown) is currently an Imperial Dwarf drummer, but I may replace him later. I like how the lion shields and the red beards turned out.

This leads me on to Slayers - I previously gave them blonde hair, as I couldn't find a scheme for red hair that made me happy. I don't think it works that well, so I am going to repaint the beard on one of the Dragonslayers this week.

I am unsure as yet whether to give them all the characteristic red hair or to do a mix of hair colours (natural colours + crazy ones like purple, electric blue, green, etc). What do you guys think?
