The Oosterbeek Perimeter - iPaint's WWII Plog

So, here's my World War Two paint log for the Oosterbeek perimeter from the battle for Arnhem during Operation Market Garden, September 1944.

So far, I have 4 Brits finished, 4 more in the works, and 6 Germans that I need to make a test fig for.

These are Battle Honours 25mm British Ariborne, though they are on the larger side, so really I'd classify them as 28mm.

When I first looked at them I thought they were Flames of War models and almost fell out of my chair seeing that amount of detail on them, especially the eyes.

They still look great. The camo turned out fantastic.

    Looking forward to seeing more,

    They look great!

Which rules do you plan to use them with?

    Happy Painting,

Quality paint job - british camo is a real pain to get to look good - think you've done a great job there.

    Looking forward to some more.

Here's the couple German Heer test figs I've finished.

I like the helmet on the middle German. It is very reminiscent of some Germany Stahl-helms from WW1. Like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_AP-rb774dm...WW1+German.jpg

Haha, thanks. It was my (rather lame now that I look at it) attempt at greenstuffing a helmet cover onto him. I'll have to do better in the future. I've got about 16 or so Battle Honours Germans in soft caps (about 10 too many imo) that I will be adding greenstuffed helmets to out of a mold. Should give me plenty of practice on getting the shape consistent across the entire helmet.

The camo is the spring side Heer Splinter pattern. If I get around to some FJ I'll paint their camo in the fall pattern, which had a greener base color.

Do you have a set of rules you plan to use with these models?

I normally play Flames of War (and love it) but the nice 28mm WWII models that are out there make me want to try something else

    Cheers,

    Allan

Yeah, the minis are nice. I hope they can hold up well enough against the likes of BAM and Artizan. From what I've heard, the BH figs are on the smaller side of 28mm, and the BAM and Artizan are pretty much the bread and butter ranges of 28mm figs, with a few outliers like Black Tree and Foundry. The former is hit or miss on the sculpts (either like it or you don't), while the latter is a bit pricey and limited in scale and scope of the range. Though BAM is coming out with their SS and plastic Germans pretty soon, and Westwind has started sculpting larger models to fill up their Berlin or Bust range - the older models are 25mm and somewhat lacking in detail and definition.

I'm looking into Disposable Heroes and Coffin for Seven Brothers by Iron Ivan Games. I've heard it's fun, quick, and not a lot of book-keeping. Starting with a solid foundation for rules, you can then build up with whatever you want to add into your game. I've placed the rules on order and should get them sometime next week. In the meantime, I'll be heading down to our local gaming club this Saturday to try out some 1/35 scale home-brewed rules. Think they're gonna do Eastern Front. Should be fun.

I've been playing FoW on and off for a long while, did a lot of playtesting back in the day, but have been out of the loop for about a year now.

Beautiful work, iPaint! I love those British Airborne figures.

I'm feeling the same thing. I've got thousands of points of FOW, but the idea of painting up a small force of 28mm British Airborne or German Fallschirmjäger is really tempting. I just need to pick a skirmish level WWII game system that I like, first.

Good looking germans - in fact, if you hadn't told us you'd green stuffed the helmet yourself, I would never have known.

I've played Disposable Heroes & . . . a few times now and enjoy it - it's very bloody! I hope you enjoy it. A couple things with it - there are a fair few rules in there - the books 55 pages and about 43 of them are filled with rules. Once you're upto speed its not an issue, but it was a little offputting to start with.

If you do like it, you'll need to pick up the force supplements to get the best from the game as there are only the basic infantry lists in the book (heer, us and british infantry) a couple armour profiles and one air support each. So no british airborne or fallschirmjager in the rulebook.

Looking forward to hear how your first few games go!

Btw, what are you basing your figures on? Coins?

Re: The Oosterbeek Perimeter - iPaint's WWII Plog

    Update time.

I grabbed a few of the original Germans I painted, oh, say 4 years ago, and updated their flesh and some of their kit to match the more recent ones I painted. I also added some of the GW washes across most of the minis to darken and define the recesses.

Overall, they fit in quite nice. I also added some five o'clock shadows to a few of them.

A closer detail shot from earlier, without the grass added yet.

I'm also waiting on a push-mold for helmets to dry, so I can get rid of the insane amount of soft caps that Battle Honours deemed necessary to include in their packs. Should be done curing by tonight, and I can start working on helmets tomorrow. The first few will be interesting to see of the process will work, and if it doesn't, they'll receive helmet covers.

Which grey did you use to paint them? Vallejo German Field Grey? Been playing around with that colour, not sure yet how to highlight it...

Overall, very nice. I have a friend living in Oosterbeek. The stories they can tell you they hear from the local townspeople... phew!

Back from the dead, hopefully this time with some gusto.

Been busy getting back into WWII and historicals. The results? Some new Warlord Games Brit and German paratroopers, as well as some Russians that were accidentally shipped in place of the Red Devils box.

Here was the haul (the part that was correct, part 1. Part 2 is still en route with the mis-packed Red Devils box).

    1 Fallshirmjager Box Set
    1 Fallshirmjager Tank Hunters pack
    1 StuG III G
1 British Airborne 6-pounder AT gun
    1 British Squad

And the straggler Red Army box that was sent instead of a Red Devils.

Pics of the StuG, it's small!

Some rhinoplasty was needed due to a ton of flash.

    And after.

    More pics....

Smock: Yellow Ochre highlighted with a 2:1 Ochre to White
Camo: Olive Grey and a specially mixed rust-orange red. Closest color is probably a Folk Art Terracotta.
Trousers: Chocolate Brown, to be highlighted with English Uniform.

I was very pleased that the BAM figures match up well with my Old Glory Battle Honours figures, though sadly the BH Fallshirmjager are true-25's, not 28's and are on the small side.

Those are sweet models and you do them justice, mate. The nose-job is well-done. I currently play FoW, but would absolutely love to get into a good 25/28mm WWII ttg.

    Brilliant miniatures!

I love the look of the StuG and will have to pick one up for myself.

Glad you are back to plogging this project
