The Tale of 40K Painters, 2009-2010: FINAL SUBMISSIONS THREAD!

My good and dear friends! This is it, the final 2009-2010 season Tale of 40K Painters thread! In theory, you should have your final unit ready to submit now! In practice, if you're anything like me, you'll have run out of momentum long ago and be desperately trying to paint two months worth of stuff before the submission deadline...

Fortunately, since I am a generous kind of chap, the submission deadline is going to be the end of this month. So, you have 31 days to finish your army (or in my case fleet). To be honest, it takes a little longer than that I don't really mind, but it would be nice to see everyone in by the end of the month if you can manage it.

For those of you who don’t know what the Tale of Painters is, look here. The new Tale will start in a month or so, so this is the time to get your name down! Just post in the signup spread, which can be found in this sub forum.

NOTE:I'm currently suffering from an RSI and so I can't type much. For this reason I won't be able to answer as many questions as I'd like to, nor will I be able to post many comments/feedback on everyone else's work. Hopefully I'll be back up to speed soon. Even if I'm not posting individual comments on what you're doing I'd just like to say how much I enjoy reading through your posts and, especially, looking at the pictures.

    YOUR MONTHLY UPDATE

For those who are signed up to the tale... you know the drill.

    Sam (McMullet)

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Harry has also posted a couple of good FAQs in the Fantasy tale thread, which are equally applicable here. I will shamelessly steal and repost them here (references to "200 points a month" simply mean a tenth of your army, so if you paint 1500 points altogether that means 150 a month):

    Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

    Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Is there any way to "buy back" a Joker later on in the tale?
A : Yes, just post an update with double points later on, and you'll get back your first joker.

    STAT ATTACK

Will be done sometime I hope!

Re: The Tale of 40K Painters, 2009-2010: FINAL SUBMISSIONS THREAD!

First of all, a huge thanks to everyone who's commented on my work or offered advice over the past two years - it's been greatly appreciated. Secondly, a huge thanks to McMullet for running the Tale again. Thirdly, congratulations to everyone who's finished the Tale this year - I'm looking forward to seeing all of your army pics! Because this is my second year painting Deathskull Orks for the Tale, all of my pictures this month will be of my combined army from both Tales.

    misterboff's Deathskull Orks: July 2010

TOTAL PAINTING FOR JULY: 0 POINTS (JOKER)

    #Super Heavy: 600 points
    Stompa - 600 points

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Along with what I painted for last years Tale minus 501 points (3 mobs of of Truk Boyz) that I sold to fund some of the newer releases, I've now got nearly 6000 points of Orks fully painted! (~3400 points of new Orks painted for both Tales, as well as ~2600 points of old Gorkamorka Orks).
Lows: Still waiting (hoping) for the rest of the Ork range (particularly Meganobz, Flash Gitz and Warbuggies) to be remade in plastic (although the FW Kommando kit is tempting), but with all the new releases of the past few years I think it'll probably be a while. Also, my FLGS closed last month, so I've yet to use some of my most recently painted units (including the Stompa) in a game .

Next month, I might start the next Tale with a few Jokers (I've got a Cadian Battleforce to paint anyway) until the new Dark Eldar get released in November...

Well here we are the end of another year of the Tale. Unfortunately I am ending the year on a bit of a downer for both my armies - For Eldar I've just not had the motivation to get anything new finised for them and in a way that has been the story of the year - For Daemons the new plastics have only just arrived and although I had been beavering away converting up a Nurgle Herald it was all a bit too little too late. Anyway here are the army shots -

    Eldar -

    Daemons -

    All the Daemons -

    See you all next Tale

    MADE IT!!!

Dumnorix's Evil Sunz (appr. 2000 points)

    JULY PAINTING:

    Nob (eavy armour, Waagh banner)
Looted wagon (Boomgun, 2 Big shootas, Ard case)

TOTAL PAINTING FOR JULY: 165 Points

    GRAND TOTAL: 2004 points.

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
The looted wagon used to be the respectable old imperial Rhino 'Puritas'. Now, however, it is the 'Waaagh!', da biggest gun in Boss Wazza's merry band!

    BUILD/CONVERSION:
The nob is a converted AOBR Nob, using additional parts from the Nobs set.
The Waaagh! started life as a humble Rhino, to which I added various bits from a Battlewagon. It may be totally superfluous, but I also modelled the interior, adding the tops of Stormboy rokkit packs as extra large boomgun shells.

    PAINTING:
Ork skin: Catachan Green, Devlan Mud Wash, Camo Green drybrush
Grot skin: Camo Green, Devlan Mud Wash
Metal: Boltgun Metal drybrush over black undercoat. There's also the occasional Tin Bitz detail. Devlan Mud wash.
Red metal: Overbrush metal with Mechrite Red, leaving plenty of scratches.
Brown stuff: Bestial Brown base, mostly with Devlan Mud Wash, but also several other washes and highlights as the mood struck me.
Red stuff: Bestial Brown highlighted with Mechrite Red.

    BASING:
Fine gravel painted Bestial Brown, Bleached Bone drybrush.

    STILL TO DO:
I still have about 1000 points of unpainted orks awaiting the paintbrush. I'm still on the fence whether to do these as part of next year's tale, or if I'll start a personal plog, as I also have about a hundred million billion other things I want to paint.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Made it all the way to the end! Still not done, though.
Lows: Late pictures. Still not done...

    And now... PICTURES

Re: The Tale of 40K Painters, 2009-2010: FINAL SUBMISSIONS THREAD!

Well guys, its with a heavy heart I wave a little white flag. A bout of illness, running work while my boss is away, and trying to bust out some comission blood angels has left me with little room to do anything for myself recently, and whilst I've got the initial paint down for my shadowsword I doubt I'll get it finished so, sadly, I can't claim to have finished this years tale.

Here's what the army looks like today (after spending most of the day varnishing)

I have to say whilst I may not have quite lasted the course I'm extremely proud of my accomplishments so far and its inspired me to do something greater in next years tale. The list of things to do are...

    35 Wargames Factory Greatcoats
    35 Victrix greatcoats
    80 Techie guardsmen
    10 Arbites
    5 Truescale Raven Guard
    5 True scale grey knights
    1000pts of Sisters of battle
    Various inquisitorial types
5 powered armour suits (ogryns possibly)
    1 Scratchbuilt Thunderbolt

That doesn't include any of the vehicles I want to add.

I'd like to thank everyone for there comments over the past months, its been greatly appreciated and has kept me going. There's been some truly beautiful armies come out of this and hopefully there's going to be a few more to join them next year.

I've also decided to do something a little different next year. As much as I've enjoyed/am enjoying the guard, its definately been a gaming rather then a painting army and I dont feel I've used my skills much. If anything I've been relying on washes and foundation paints so much I feel I've lost some of my ability so a bright and colorful Tau army should sort that out for next year.

    Irondog's Crimson Fists

Whew, just made it! Nothing like cutting it down to the wire.

Total Painting for August '10: 240 points
Total Army Size: ~ 2000 points (gotta have some points for wargear)
Die Roll: Does it matter at this point? We're pretty thin on participants.

    Units:
After a couple of months of summer vacations with the family and getting some other projects done around the house, I wanted to finish strong with some cool stuff. I painted up a small unit of Assault Marines and a Jump Pack Chaplain to lead them. Just like the rest of this army, I picked the models more for flavor and fun than any tactical advantage.

    Conversions:
    None.

    Painting:
The blue armor was done in the same way as the rest of my infantry. The armor on the Chaplain is done in Chaos Black, with an edge highlight of Codex Grey. I then washed the black areas with Badab Black wash to tone down the highlight a bit.

    Basing:
Gravel and pebbles, then painted with Bestial Brown, followed by drybrushes of Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone in that order.

    Still to Do:
I've still got to get clearcoat on these models. It's foggy as hell here today, and I didn't want to risk the humidity messing things up.

    Highs and Lows:
    Highs: YAY, I'M DONE!!!!!

Lows: Here's the real kicker. After painting 2000 points of Crimson Fists over the last year, and getting in a few games I've come to a realization...

...I don't like playing Marines. Ain't that a bitch! They just don't fit my playstyle. For me, they seem a bit bland, and just flat out aren't as much fun to play as my Orks. Hehe, so guess what I'll painting for the coming tale....

    PICTURES

The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their own turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! we see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude. - Uthan the Perverse, Eldar Philosopher

Re: The Tale of 40K Painters, 2009-2010: FINAL SUBMISSIONS THREAD!

Well! 3 years down the line and I've finally been defeated by the Tale of Painters. I still have a partly assembled Chaos battleship on my desk and it's not going to paint itself in the next 43 minutes, so I suppose I'll have to let this one go...

Still, it's been a great three years, and I painted a whole lot of stuff. Even this year, where I haven't done quite as well as I might have hoped, I've managed 1750 points worth of chaos ships.

    Here they are:

Also, I've taken a few shots of everything I painted for the various Tales of 40K Painters:

(Epic Orks in the foreground, Nids at the back, Chaos fleet to the right)

Many thanks to everyone who's participated in the 40K Tale over the last three years. I've seen some truly inspirational painting and even if you only managed to paint one months worth of stuff, it was still an achievement to be proud of and I hope you all agree that the whole project has been a very positive thing for the painting forums here on Warseer.

Special thanks go to Harry for kicking this whole thing off and keeping it going!

I'll be keeping an eye on the new Tale, I hope it's as much of a success as the last three!

    All the best,

    Sam (McMullet)

I am in similar boat. Between a separation, moving from my house, pending divorce, dating, a girlfriend etc. I wasnt able to finish the tale either. What I will do however is post photos of what I accomplished because I did get alot done.

Those will be up in the next few weeks for sure.
